Historia
With incomparable wisdom, skill, and wit, world-renowned economist John Kenneth Galbraith traces the history of the major speculative episodes in our economy over the last three centuries. Exposing the ways in which normally sane people display reckless behavior in pursuit of profit, Galbraith asserts that our "notoriously short" financial memory is what creates the conditions for market collapse. By recognizing these signs and understanding what causes them we can guard against future recessions and have a better hold on our country's (and our own) financial destiny.

Rambling. No idea what that was about.
Revisado: 06-14-24
Maybe the print book is better, but the audio version is just rambling nonsense. Even the bottom line at the end is a real head-scratcher (as in "What did he just say? And what have I been listening to for 3 hours?).
Surely there are more useful books out there.

Inspired by How an Economy Grows and Why It Doesn't - a previously published book by the Schiffs' father Irwin, a widely published economist and activist - How an Economy Grows and Why It Crashes incorporates the spirit of the original while tackling the latest economic issues. With wit and humor, the Schiffs explain the roots of economic growth, the uses of capital, the destructive nature of consumer credit, the source of inflation, the importance of trade, savings, and risk, and many other topical principles of economics.

Great Non-Technical Intro
Revisado: 06-14-24
Great place to start for junior high school kids, high school, college, or adults.
For those wanting technical details about economics, this ain't it. Virtually no math is involved here, just common sense.
For those wanting a non-technical introduction and overview of economic, this is great. It starts very simply and does get a bit more intense from there.
This book is basically a humorous, light-hearted, and simplified version of George Orwell's classic "Animal Farm", but about economics & corruption rather than politics & tyranny.

Clausewitz
- A Very Short Introduction

Historia
Karl von Clausewitz is considered by many to have been one of the greatest writers on war. His study On War was described by the American strategic thinker Bernard Brodie as "not simply the greatest, but the only great book about war". It is hard to disagree. Even though he wrote his only major work at a time when the range of firearms was 50 yards, much of what he had to say remains relevant today. Michael Howard explains Clausewitz's ideas in terms both of his experiences as a professional soldier in the Napoleonic Wars, and of the intellectual background of his time.

Useless. Disappointing.
Revisado: 06-04-24
Yet another book "about" its subject, rather than just presenting the subject itself!
It's not even about interesting biographical details, there's simply talk "about" the man and his work, and in such vague generalities as to be totally useless.
Things like "there are two types of war: total and that to impose your terms of peace". Oh really? What elementary school kid COULDN'T tell you that already? More general generalities of generalship where that brilliancy came from... but why?
Waste of time. NOT a good introductory book for anyone of any description. Disappointed. There are way better books than this one out there.
On a positive note, as usual, I thought the audio narrator was great. My issue is with the writer: this book has no point. I literally couldn't write a single-page PowerPoint slide of bullet-pointed highlights of this book (if I did, it would be blank). And I'm surprised because this same author's other book in this "Very Short Introduction" series, "The First World War", is great.

Too light
Revisado: 06-04-24
300 years of history in 100 pages... that's 3 years per page, about 1 year per paragraph. Clearly it's not going to cover much, but this was really, really light. The inclusion of the ads for familiar products (breakfast cereals, soft drinks, etc.) was really over the top, or under the bottom.
This book would be ok for a junior high or high school kid who really knows nothing about American business, or perhaps someone who's been ice fishing in Northern Yukon for 30 years and has no idea what's going on in the Lower 48.
But a college business major, an MBA student, or anyone out there in the "real world" of business who's trying to learn a little bit about what's going on and how it all works will need a lot more detail than this. You could start here, or skip it and just go directly to a much richer source, maybe by industry or by time period, or biographies of a few key individuals who are relevant for you. That will do you more good than reciting breakfast cereal ads in this book.

Very, very light on substance
Revisado: 05-16-24
Maybe I got something out of it (more my own thoughts triggered by their dialogue than their content itself-- hint: emphasize the Run Chart!), so I won't say it's valueless, but it's certainly very light for anyone, even beginners.
On the plus side, at least it's short! Less than an hour, much less if you listen at 1.4 X speed or so.
I'd comment more but there's very little substance to comment on, Deming-related or otherwise.
At the very end they say to research Deming and quality, etc., more. Yeah, no kidding! In fact, that's what you should do first, before or even instead of listening to this half hour of little to nothing.

Historia
In The Black Swan Taleb outlined a problem, and in Antifragile he offers a definitive solution: how to gain from disorder and chaos while being protected from fragilities and adverse events. For what Taleb calls the "antifragile" is actually beyond the robust, because it benefits from shocks, uncertainty, and stressors, just as human bones get stronger when subjected to stress and tension. The antifragile needs disorder in order to survive and flourish. Taleb stands uncertainty on its head, making it desirable, even necessary, and proposes that things be built in an antifragile manner.

Lots of energy, but very few take-away points
Revisado: 05-01-24
Lots of entertaining anecdotes, references, and name-dropping (and several personal axes to grind), but I'm now approx one-fourth of the way through this significantly-sized book (I've listened to about 4 hours or 100 pages' worth), and all I can say is there is very, very little that I've learned yet that I can do better on now.
It seems my energy would be more usefully spent elsewhere.
(The narrator is great! But the content seems to lack much point. Not enough to fill a single 3×5 card with notes, after 100 pages of the book.)
