Amazing story. I'm so glad I found this book. This book that should be required reading in school. I will never forget this story.
American Dirt is a FANTASTIC book about this same subject. Although this was a memoir and American Dirt is a work of fiction, both give you an amazing perspective. American Dirt is way more fast paced than this one. Both books show you how exceptional human beings can be towards each other, American Dirt also shows you how cruel ppl can also be. So glad Javier decided to share his story, it's incredibly brave and enlightening.

Historia
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

A "must-read" book!
Revisado: 07-08-23
There are very few authors that have written multiple books that I really like. This author is one of those few...I LOVED Demon Copperhead and I LOVED this one even more! This is one of those books where the characters will truly be thought about after you've finished the book! As an atheist, I was more than a little worried when I saw the word "bible" in the title. I truly have zero interest or patience for any bible lesson BS or afterlife nonsense....and am completely turned off by religion...
This family in this story is led by a religious zealot but that is truly just part of the story..and it's definitely one of the main ideas even...but other than that being a characteristic of this man...no need to worry that this plot gets derailed by any "teachings"!

This is one of those I'd call an "easy read" ...IF it were a book. It was my 1st time with this author and from the reviews, it seems like this might not have been up to par for him. If that's the case, then great! because I liked this book a lot and if it only gets better.....good news for me! The narrator was AWESOME!!

If you were one of King Henry VIII's six wives, who would you be? Would you be Anne Boleyn, who literally lost her head? Would you be the subject of rumor and scandal like Catherine Howard? Or would you get away and survive like Anna of Cleves? Meet them and Henry's other queens - each bound for divorce or death - in this epic and thrilling novel that reads like fantasy but really happened.

LOVED IT!
Revisado: 04-28-23
I'm a big fan of historical fiction...and 90% of historical fiction novels are about WWII. Don't get me wrong, some of my most favorite books fall into this category (The Rose Code, The Nightingale..both outfreakingstanding!) But I've read soooo many lately that I've been wanting to read historical fictions in any other category... they're not that easy to find...and good ones are even harder...BUT this one was so interesting...MOST the narrators were great and the characters (the wives) were well developed and each fascinating in their own right.

Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul.

Great Book
Revisado: 04-28-23
I love when I've found a great book and find myself during the day wanting to get back to it..this was one of those books. it's what I would call "an easy read" if it were actually a book...I guess on Audible.. it's "an easy listen". I generally read much "deeper" books, but it had a great rating..4.8! but what REALLY got me to read this book....J.K. SIMMONS!!! I knew he'd be a great narrator and he was! (Doesn't he, at times, sound like Mike Rowe??) Anyway...Ove... what's not to love about this guy. And you know when books sometimes are advertised as "it will make you laugh at loud"....yeah well, I've NEVER found that to actually be true, Until now. You really will laugh (out loud!) and man oh man will you cry...

If you approve of torture (for good reasons only otherwise what kind monster would that make you) than this is the book for you. *Spoiler Alert * That is the main character's job ...torturing ppl for information...
Seriously??? That many people are okay with this that not only does an author think "Hey!! I'll write a book about this incredibly smart woman whose job it is to torture people, folks will LOVE HER, but she accidentally tortures an innocent man, who immediately forgives her" (yeah that makes sense...he must've been generally in favor of torture too), and then this book gets a relatively good amount of favorable ratings.
I was impressed with myself for getting through the 1st chapter which explains nothing about the book...but the story does FINALLY get started and I liked it.. I liked the character.. I liked where it was going.. it was interesting...and then she starts torturing this man and find out this is what she does... this doesn't start until chapter 9 so it's completely disconcerting...and I realize there's no way I have any interest in 25 more chapters of this...sorry torture isn't okay no matter what your reasons are

Great Story
Revisado: 02-21-23
I am surprised that I enjoyed a book about, and told through the eyes of an 11 year old boy so much. How is this possible? I passed on this book several times for that very reason even though I LOVED American Dirt. I should not have waited. This was a beautiful story. And it wasn't a thriller in any way, but several times I had that feeling of "WHAT?!?!" "OMG!!!"
