Historia
A powerful work of reportage and American history that braids the story of the forced removal of Native Americans onto treaty lands in the nation’s earliest days, and a small-town murder in the 1990s that led to a Supreme Court ruling reaffirming Native rights to that land more than a century later.

Historia
Even the smartest among us can feel inept as we fail to figure out which light switch or oven burner to turn on, or whether to push, pull, or slide a door. The fault, argues this ingenious - even liberating - audiobook, lies not in ourselves, but in product design that ignores the needs of users and the principles of cognitive psychology. The Design of Everyday Things shows that good, usable design is possible. The rules are simple: make things visible, exploit natural relationships that couple function and control, and make intelligent use of constraints.

An outstanding walkthrough the discipline of Design. The author is for good reasons a renown figure in the field, and the books covers many key areas of Design. I will recommend it as a foundation read going forward.

Historia
With the death of Steve Jobs in 2011, Jony Ive has become the most important person at Apple. Some would argue he always was. Steve Jobs discovered Ive in 1997, when he found the scruffy British designer toiling away in a studio surrounded by hundreds of sketches and prototypes. Jobs instantly realised he had found a talent who could reverse Apple's decline, and become his 'spiritual partner'. Their collaboration produced iconic products including the iMac, iPod, iPad and iPhone - designs that overturned entire industries and created the world's most powerful brand.

I wished to get a stronger sense of understanding of Jony’s takes on design. But that I mostly got in the first chapters. The rest felt like product timelines.

Historia
Stan McChrystal served for 34 years in the US Army, rising from a second lieutenant in the 82nd Airborne Division to a four-star general, in command of all American and coalition forces in Afghanistan. During those years he worked with countless leaders and pondered an ancient question: "What makes a leader great?" He came to realize that there is no simple answer. McChrystal profiles 13 famous leaders from a wide range of eras and fields - from corporate CEOs to politicians and revolutionaries. He uses their stories to explore how leadership works in practice.

Inspiring reflections on leadership
Revisado: 08-11-23
I find McChrystal’s voice always compelling and thought provoking. The fact that he portrayed one of the men he killed was a significant nudge incentivising me to read this. I will probably read it again.

Historia
Vividly written and exhaustively researched, Jonathan Eig’s King: A Life is the first major biography in decades of the civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.—and the first to include recently declassified FBI files. In this revelatory new portrait of the preacher and activist who shook the world, the bestselling biographer gives us an intimate view of the courageous and often emotionally troubled human being who demanded peaceful protest for his movement but was rarely at peace with himself.

Humanizing the icon
Revisado: 08-07-23
This biography is a treasure for anyone curious about MLK. Developing a rich picture of the real person behind the mythological beacon that he has become. The prose is strong and rich making the read of this comprehensive really enjoyable. To me, understanding his humanity is encouraging and invigorating to keep fighting for justice. This book offers a unique opportunity to explore the reality of the person underneath the bigger than life persona that has become a pop culture icon.

Historia
In Teaching to Transgress, Bell Hooks - writer, teacher, and insurgent black intellectual - writes about a new kind of education, education as the practice of freedom. Teaching students to "transgress" against racial, sexual, and class boundaries in order to achieve the gift of freedom is, for Hooks, the teacher's most important goal. Bell Hooks speakes to the heart of education today: how can we rethink teaching practices in the age of multiculturalism? What do we do about teachers who do not want to teach, and students who do not want to learn? How should we deal with racism and sexism in the classroom? Full of passion and politics, Teaching to Transgress combines a practical knowledge of the classroom with a deeply felt connection to the world of emotions and feelings. This is the rare book about teachers and students that dares to raise questions about eros and rage, grief and reconciliation, and the future of teaching itself.

I find bell hooks books always bring me new insight, and in the spirit of her pedagogics, it stirs something in me and leave me reflecting and questioning my practice. I wholeheartedly recommend this or any other of her works. One comes wise on the other end.

Hilariously Outrageous
Revisado: 05-27-21
The stories range from horrible to double facepalm, but I’m glad to be able to get an insight to their experience and I hope I be able to avoid inflicting racist behaviors on POC.
The narration is brilliant and Amber lead as voice actor is great fun, plus Lacey’s comments and dialogues makes it a very unique and precious audiobook.
