Good story. Bad narrator
Revisado: 03-07-22
If you've ever watched the first few minutes of the movie Good Morning Vietnam then you know what this narrator sounds like. Flat. Monotone. And uninteresting. But if you can get past that, then the story isn't half bad. I would be interested in book 2 of this series but would need to know if it's the same narrator or not before purchasing.

In The Case for Heaven, best-selling author and investigative journalist turns a critical eye on the evidence for heaven, a variety of claims about the afterlife, and modern-day stories of near-death experiences to build a compelling case that death is not the end of our existence but a transition to an exciting and very real world to come.

A Good Examination of the Tough Questions
Revisado: 12-15-21
One of the most inspiring, convicting, and challenging books I've read as a Christian. It helped me recalibrate my orientation so that I am more Heaven, than earthly, focused. And it gave strong answers to hard questions that I not only found intellectually satisfying but also biblically sound. Thank you Mr. Strobel for your excellent work. I hope God continues to see fit to use your gifts for His glory. When you finally do get to Heaven, I hope the first book God gives you is The Case for a Life Well-Lived.

If you're depressed or suicidal, BEWARE!
Revisado: 04-10-21
I am torn about this book. On one hand the narrator is in a class by herself, bringing to life a large cast of characters through little nuances that paint vivid mental pictures of each person. And the author takes a theme like a hostage drama and manages to coax a black comedy into a literary theme of hope amongst sadness. His poetic language and emotionally impactful analogies combined with the narrator's talent were enough to drag me across the finish line of this book. But I went kicking and screaming the whole way.
Every character in this book has an extremely depressing backstory, most of which will trigger the clinically depressed and will remind the rest of us of what we struggle throughout our days to forget. If you are suicidal, PLEASE do not read this book. The nihilistic tone cannot be overcome by the comedic moments and since hope only peaks at us in the last 2% of the book, the majority of the text could be overwhelming for those teetering between life and death. Triggers abound everywhere in this book and could unfortunately serve to validate a person's beliefs about the hopelessness of life.
I wish I could recommend this book. I truly loved the literary language and the skill it took the author to create a story that felt more like a stage play and less like a novel. But in the end, I cannot recommend this in good conscience. Buyer beware!

Good story bad narrator
Revisado: 01-15-21
Great story but the narrator is very monotone, especially when doing men's dialog. She does a great job when a female character is upset or sad but all male characters come off sounding the same - flat and almost robotic. If you can endure the narrator, the story is worth a listen

Historia
It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

This is an absolutely perfect book. From it's premise to it's lyrical prose to the very last line, everything about it grabs you and holds you within it's hands. It is a treasure not to be missed. And one of the few books I would consider rereading. It is truly a modern day literary triumph.

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

Not my favorite
Revisado: 11-10-18
I took a chance on this book because the premise sounded interesting, and I had never read anything by Kate Atkinson. I was excited to try out a new author. Unfortunately, this book was a huge disappointment. The plot never fulfilled the promise that the premise suggested and only the will of the reader to propel it forward. The book was less mystery and more episodic stream of consciousness. The "big reveal" was unsatisfactory, and the heroine was less spy and more Walter Mitty. Not to mention the ending just kind of...ended.
The narrator did an excellent job, but that is the only redeeming value. If you're like me and want to try Mrs. Atkinson for the first time, pick another book to start with.

Historia
Increasingly, Western culture embraces confusion as a virtue and decries certainty as a sin. Those who are confused about sexuality and identity are viewed as heroes. Those who are confused about morality are progressive pioneers. Those who are confused about spirituality are praised as tolerant. Conversely, those who express certainty about any of these issues are seen as bigoted, oppressive, arrogant, or intolerant.

Excellent book
Revisado: 05-30-18
Mr. Murray takes an insightful, compassionate look at how to apply a Christian worldview to our culture. He provides well-crafted arguments that explain the necessity of living from a truth mindset and how to.engage a culture that opposes this perspective. In the book he tackles issues of freedom, science, sexuality, and more without being dogmatic or illogical. I found this to be an intellectually and spiritually engaging listen and believe it would benefit a re-listen to absorb all he is trying to say.

Excellent book
Revisado: 05-15-18
I'm not sure that John Hart has written a book I didn't like. There are some that I like more than others, such as Down River, The Last Child, and Redemption Road but that is true of almost all authors. The Hush is an excellent novel in it's own right and reunites us with a favorite character from one of his previous works. As always, Hart intertwines a solid story with the literary stylings that make lovers of language want to go back and reread some sentences. In this book he even tackles a supernatural element, but does so in a believable way. Have fun listening to this book. It is engaging and unlike some supernatural works, has a perfect ending that will make you smile.

Amazing true story of the 1936 Olympic rowing crew. Told with reverence and awe, but never lacking drama, this story transports you back to your own youth and makes you laugh, wonder, and cry. An incredible telling of what today seems like an impossible feat. Well worth a listen...or perhaps two.
