Towles is a remarkable writer and an insightful observer of human behavior. I kept reversing the recording to listen again to the way Towles he captures ideas. And then I got completely carried away by the stories. I’ll listen to this one again for the sheer joy of it!

French’s Most Optimistic Series?

I am enjoying the series of characters and story lines by Tana French so much. They feel less gritty and more hopeful— despite climate change being a major character in this narrative. I love the slower pace of these narratives and the interior reflection of the characters. More please!

Obsessive!

Warning: once you start listening you will not be able to stop. The storyline is tight and moves along, the characters are engaging and there’s always just one more twist. The narrators are also terrific. Such a fun way to spend a weekend. Save it for a long drive or a big closet cleaning day. Great company!

What a joy to find a new favorite author in James McBride. These characters are so engaging I felt like I was on a movie set watching it all happen. Beautiful writing— enjoyed it so much!

A Tribute to Bold Women

Deeply researched and hard to put down. Although the author concedes she takes liberties with the literal history - the context feels accurate not only to 18th century Scotland but also to modern humanity and 21st Century politics. People can be brave, generous and compassionate. We can also be villainous, narcissistic and controlling. Whether standing in judgment from a 18th Century pulpit in Scotland— or wearing the judicial robes of the 21st century— the urge to dominate and control women’s lives and livelihoods continues to be a historic struggle. Great read!

Good Intentions, but...

The device the author uses is clever- maybe too clever- but it fails to 'string' things together. I appreciate her humanist objective. I think it wasn't fully conceived. I had no problem suspending belief to get on board with the premise, it was more about what she failed to do with the idea that is a disappointment.

I think there are many other books that do this better.

Learning ALL of our histories…

Shameful and sad. If we are to survive as a democratic nation we must acknowledge the reality of our past. Grateful for the work of David Grann and other journalists/storytellers for bringing the stories of the Osage into the larger cultural awareness.

I appreciate that Lee avoided explicitly calling out the historical context of white supremacy in our nation, although it is clearly present in every chapter. I hope this telling will continue to help us understand the full history of European settlement in North America and perhaps enlighten our future.
