Historia
As David Brooks observes, “There is one skill that lies at the heart of any healthy person, family, school, community organization, or society: the ability to see someone else deeply and make them feel seen—to accurately know another person, to let them feel valued, heard, and understood.” And yet we humans don’t do this well. All around us are people who feel invisible, unseen, misunderstood. In How to Know a Person, Brooks sets out to help us do better, posing questions that are essential for all of us: If you want to know a person, what kind of attention should you cast on them?

Historia
In Blackwater Falls, Colorado, veteran police officer Harry Cooper is hot on the heels of some local vandals when the situation turns deadly: Harry, believing one of them has a gun, opens fire and Duante Young, a young Black man, is killed. The “gun” in Duante’s hands was a bottle of spray paint. Meanwhile, in nearby Denver, a drug raid goes south and a Latino teen, Mateo Ruiz, is also killed. The Denver Police force is spread thin between the two cases, and protests on both sides begin.

I’m a big Lori Rader-Day fan. She’s one of the best in the mystery genre. All her books are layered, exciting, and surprising. All her characters are authentic and multifaceted. This book was no exception. Everything about it feels real. I was quickly drawn in and could not put this fabulous book down. I highly recommend this book and any book by this author.

Revisado: 03-29-20
If you are a fan of the mystery genre, you are likely no stranger to Lori Rader-Day. Since the 2014 debut of her first novel, THE BLACK HOUR, Ms. Rader-Day has swept the awards with nominations and wins for all her books. Every single one. And she keeps getting better. THE LUCKY ONE was so fresh, full of surprises, and impossible to put down. The character are complex and compelling. I will listen to this audiobook again and again.

This mystery transported me into a subculture I hadn't known before--the people who ride the rails. The protagonist, a grieving young war veteran, has so much depth. (Even her dog is complex). The story is surprising. The narration is top rate. I loved this book so much, I'm buying it for other people.
