Historia
The year is 2048. Climate change and bio-warfare have ravaged much of the Earth, and societal meltdown has splintered the US into fragments. But out of the ruins, Northern California has built a thriving culture based on respect for the four sacred things: air, fire, water and earth.

Indigenous wisdom expropriation
Revisado: 12-20-21
Love the story and the characters. This is the ecotopia we long for, with its complications in relationships but beauty and wisdom. My heart yearns for this place and feels alive with the possibility of fighting for it in my own world. Highly recommend to anyone looking for strong, well written protagonists, indigenous wisdom, and a bit of magic.

Historia
Our favorite books keep us company, give us hope, and help us find meaning in a chaotic world. In this fresh and relatable work, atheist chaplain Vanessa Zoltan blends memoir and personal growth as she grapples with the notions of family legacy and identity through the lens of her favorite novel, Jane Eyre.

Love for Vanessa
Revisado: 09-14-21
I was skeptical to read this book. I love Vanessa’s insight on Harry Potter and the Sacred Text, and now the Real Question, but did not want to read a book I had subconsciously avoided for its dated values and treatment of people. So I read this without ever touching Jane Eyre, and it was magnificent. I got to experience all the grace of Vanessa’s wisdom, connect with characters through her lens, and enter the spiritual place I’ve re-cultivated over the years thanks to her voice. I highly recommend this book, both as its own experience and a guide on how to treat books (and life) as if it were sacred.

I’ll be Bach
Revisado: 09-08-21
This beautifully written story and world is reminiscent of Hogwarts, but where music is magic. The music in the background sets the tone and immerses you where you need to be. Great lessons for young and old, but to trust in yourself and find the magic where you are. I highly recommend.

Anthropocene is beautiful
Revisado: 07-27-21
John Green reading his own work adds a layer of vulnerability that make the book that much more enjoyable. You can hear in his tone when something has inescapably touched him, or just matters more. Especially having come to love his style on his YouTube channel, I highly recommend this for its wit, intelligence, candor, and reflection on the sacredness and responsibility of living on earth. The short stories are at a good pace and keep me wanting more. Thanks for sharing what’s real in a time it would be easier to hide away.

As a botanist and professor of plant ecology, Robin Wall Kimmerer has spent a career learning how to ask questions of nature using the tools of science. As a Potawatomi woman, she learned from elders, family, and history that the Potawatomi, as well as a majority of other cultures indigenous to this land, consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers.

Stories of promise
Revisado: 07-13-21
I love this book for its beautiful storytelling and hope for a new world. Coupled with the devastation of indigenous people, it’s both challenging and inviting. For anyone looking for wisdom figures, who needs new stories to enrich the heart and move away from consumer culture.
