Historia
Ever since he was a kid, kicking broken soccer balls on the run-down streets of East London, Gary Stevenson dreamed of something bigger. As luck would have it, he was good at numbers. At the London School of Economics, wearing tracksuits and sneakers, Stevenson shocked his posh classmates by winning a competition called “The Trading Game.” The prize? A golden ticket to a new life, as the youngest trader at Citibank.

Hell of a story
Revisado: 04-29-24
I don't know how much of it is entirely true and how much of it is creative to tie things together and keep things, but I was hooked regardless. I often love when nonfiction audiobooks are read by the author.
Vivid detail of greed, frustration, and helplessness in the context of the finance sector -- definitely doesn't inspire confidence regarding the people taking risks with the world's financial assets, though I didn't need a book to give me doubt there.

How to Steal a Presidential Election

Historia
Even in the fast and loose world of the Trump White House, the idea that a couple thousand disorganized protestors storming the U.S. Capitol might actually prevent a presidential succession was farfetched. Yet perfectly legal ways of overturning election results actually do exist, and they would allow a political party to install its own candidate in place of the true winner.

I'm more concerned than I was before
Revisado: 04-22-24
To learn that the legal theories that caused Jan 6th were among the weakest methods to undermine an election is alarming considering how much chaos it.
Republican, Democrat, Green, Libertarian, independent -- whatever you'd label yourself, if you believe in the value of democracy, this book will give you quite a lot to think about from the perspective of US elections. Lessig and Seligman make it clear, as usual, that things need to change to address catastrophic risks.

Historia
How can we make intelligent decisions about our increasingly technology-driven lives if we don’t understand the difference between the myths of pseudoscience and the testable hypotheses of science? Pulitzer Prize-winning author and distinguished astronomer Carl Sagan argues that scientific thinking is critical not only to the pursuit of truth but to the very well-being of our democratic institutions.

I'd recommend it to anyone. I feel like I need to buy some paper copies to share. The ideas described in Demon-Haunted World feel direly needed in today's world.

Really makes you think
Revisado: 04-15-23
A Wild Idea isn't perfect; I think it is too quick to brush aside the flaws of Doug Tompkins for the sake of selling his image as some larger-than-life grandiose figure. That said, wow, what an eye-opening listen into the journey of objectively one of the most successful nature conservation efforts in history. For all his brashness and arrogance, Tompkins clearly held a rare, deep love of the natural world that few people who amass similarly large wealths have. The conservation work of Doug, Kris, and their team is monumental and inspiring. Among many other thoughts, I can't help but ask: Where are the other ultra-wealthy nature lovers? Don't let the Tompkins' story stay unique. Make it become the norm.

Thought-provoking with subpar audio
Revisado: 12-04-22
Thoughtful discussion from these individuals as usual. Unsurprisingly more toe-dipping than comprehensive. The audio quality is pretty poor at times; unfortunately doesn't sound like it was recorded well, but it's mostly fine.

The world is working exactly as designed. And it’s not working very well. Which means, we need to do a better job of designing it. Design is a craft with an amazing amount of power. The power to choose. The power to influence. As designers, we need to see ourselves as gatekeepers of what we are bringing into the world and what we choose not to bring into the world.

Great case for reform in design & more
Revisado: 11-15-22
Rare book on design and the overall increasingly-digital world that I was able to fly through. Compelling arguments framed within the unease I think many of us feel that the products of our modern economy are being created and managed irresponsibly, short-sightedly, and unprofessionally. The cherry on top is Mike Monteiro sounds like Bob Odenkirk.

Historia
When we talk about human history, we often focus on great leaders, population forces, and decisive wars. But how has the earth itself determined our destiny? Our planet wobbles, driving changes in climate that forced the transition from nomadism to farming. Mountainous terrain led to the development of democracy in Greece. Atmospheric circulation patterns later on shaped the progression of global exploration, colonization, and trade. Even today, voting behavior in the southeast United States ultimately follows the underlying pattern of 75 million-year-old sediments from an ancient sea.
