Loving your child unconditionally is a great foundation to any parent, but the author seems unaware that you can love a child unconditionally and still model appropriate behavior and set standards. A well-parented child should receive both, and there is overwhelming evidence that both are necessary.

This author continues to berate anyone who might set an expectation, or praise a child’s effort, or brag about a child’s accomplishments. Many children feel words of affirmations as their love language, but this author feels that giving praise creates conditional parameters for love.

Utter nonsense.

Children need to feel that they are loved unconditionally, but that their behavior and work ethic matter too. Behavior isn’t a parameter to be loved, but it is a parameter for maturity and success.
True maturity in a human being comes from learning expectations. It comes from creating healthy relationships. It comes from work and accomplishment.

He says that good relationships aren’t an exchange of good behavior, but unconditional. Sadly, that isn’t true. You can love someone completely, but if their behavior is toxic or cruel or selfish the majority of the time, you will not want them in your life. Yes, even a child. I worry that any parent subscribing to this idea will create children that don’t feel ownership of their behavior. Children without expectations will most likely become something you didn’t want. According to the author, that’s good.

In the book his children are very young. I can’t help but think, he just doesn’t understand what it takes to make grown ups. Maybe this approach works with young kids, but teenagers need strong expectations and boundaries. They’ll thank you when they are adults.

I always felt guilty being more business focused than gospel focused. But I do believe the Lord meets is where we’re at, and teaches us there. This book helped me see that I can and should be both and that they are not mutually exclusive.

why can't they rate books to warn you of profanity? I don't want to fill my rare spare time with negative language. What a waste of money
