Not sure how I got roped into another Taylor Jenkins Reid book — fan base I suppose. I didn’t get the enthrall of Daisy Jones and this was just the same. Like Daisy Jones, it is written as an interview. I didn’t do any preview of the book other than many people having loved it. I wasn’t aware of the political agenda and gay romance. It was a unique story line and I didn’t mind that, I was just really bored throughout most the book. Reid has a very basic writing style, I wonder if she chooses interview-type stories sow she can get away with telling more than showing — if so, that is brilliant on her part. The only thing that kept me reading was the teaser from the beginning as to how the interviewer would come into the story.

Spoiler - I very much disagree with romanticizing the idea that Monique’s dad was had no guilt in the accident. There should still be Blake for knowingly getting in a car with an intoxicated driver. Also, I oppose the notion that it was right for Evelyn to reveal to Monique that her father cheated on her mother with a gay man.

Listened to this Christmas week. I am not a comedy reader or romcom reader in the slightest but I find all of Kinsella’s books light hearted and hilarious. She’s a brilliant and funny writer. All of her female characters have the same ditsy, ballsy personality but I’m definitely here for it when I need a lighter listen. As an American, I’m a sucker for a good British accent and so far all of Kinsella’s British narrators are fabulous.

Kate Moore does a great job telling the true story of Elizabeth Packard while immersing the reader in prose that have you following along in real time as if it were fiction. She also does an excellent job narrating the book with proper tone. The British accent was a bit comical considering it is an American History story but I’m a sucker for a good British accent so it worked for me. Brilliant job all around Kate Moore.

As a person who now cares for my 71 year old mom with stage 7 Alzheimer’s, I’m listening and absorbing all I can. I am more determined than ever to protect my own gut bacteria. The relationship between the gut and brain is incredibly obvious yet obnoxiously ignored in modern science. The recipe portion doesn’t translate well in audio form obviously but other than that, I found the audio version quite easy to absorb with wonderful narration.

Good plot, long middle, forced love scenes

I was taken by the story from the beginning. I was more invested with Morgan than Clara perhaps because of my age. By the middle the love scenes were cringeworthy for both Morgan and Clara. Finally I grew bored when there were about four hours left and began skipping Clara’s chapters. After finding I wasn’t missing much I skipped to Morgan’s last chapter but couldn’t make it through Clara’s last chapter. I just wasn’t as invested in the film ending that I knew was trying to bring the moral of the story all together. Good overall plot, just a bit too drawn out with forced love scenes.

Narrator was great but her male characters sounded like a nasally big bird. I had to keep reminding myself that these were supposed to be attractive men as the sounded like complete dorks.

I purchased Dave’s audiobook pre-release but was disappointed right after the book’s release to hear that he repeatedly told his Instagram followers to unfollow him if they were not willing/able to buy the book as it was some kind of “breech of contract.” His narcissistic, lack of compassion attitude is not any sort of “courage” I’m looking to emulate. Additionally, I had already listened to the first couple pages and was immediately put off by Dave’s narration which was very disconnected. It was clear he was just reading without connecting to the words he was speaking. I have unfollowed Dave and his inflated ego on Instagram and am returning the audiobook now. So disappointed.

P. Djeli Clark has a extraordinary imagination that leads to a unique storyline and also interweaves true historical events from the early 1900s that brilliantly illuminate the madness of people’s racist rationales at the time.

I will say, this may be a better read than listen and may take some time to do so myself to see if the experience is a bit better. I felt very lost from the beginning. There did not seem enough backstory to ground the reader. The significance of the sword should have been explained earlier and more thoroughly. It seems Djeli likes a tale that is confusing and doesn’t make sense, i.e. Aunties from another land that aren’t really aunties and monsters; however, I wasn’t able to fully transition with the main character as she jumped all over the place like a rambling mind.

The narrator has a brilliant accent and singing voice that really bring the characters to life. She does lack some reading fluency however which really can pull the listener from the story at times. Overall, intriguing and worth a try reading versus listening for me.

Classic Harmon book

I stand by my opinion that Harmon is one of the best modern-day American writers. This is the first book of hers I’ve listened to in audio and wonder if that may be why it ends as a 4 star rather than 5.

To me it sounded like the narrator had a cold with severe congestion for most of the book, otherwise she was a solid narrator.

I’m finding that most Harmon make-out scenes are the same despite the characters. They are beautifully done, sensual and discreet but if you’ve heard one you’ve heard them all. In most all books it is a forbidden romance whether it be too much of an age gap or one of the characters unable to enter the relationship fully.

I have just one more Harmon book to read and I will have read them all until her next book releases next month! Think I’ll read a couple other authors to take a break and come back fresh, but I will be back. No doubt!

Ken Follett took what could have been an interesting historical fiction and added such graphic pornographic rape scenes that the book became intolerable. I made it through with some fast forwarding but definitely wasn’t worth it.

Buyer beware, Not a memoir but instead a very left-wing agenda disguised as self-help

Wow, what constitutes a memoir anymore? My guess is that both the author and publisher correctly predicted that this book would get more attention under that category.

Instead, this is very much a feminist agenda preaching book disguised as a story. This author has clearly had trouble coming to terms with her conflicting viewpoints. While I agreed with very little, I stuck this through so that I could give a fair review. I feel that the main purpose of this book is for Glennon to speak out against those who have opposed her in any way without giving them a voice. My biggest objection is that she speaks her truth as THE TRUTH. You are almost there Glennon, just a bit more evolving needs to take place. I did laugh out loud when she stated, “that is why Jesus only wrote in sand”. Her truth will continue to evolve as she states but it is irresponsible to place it out as ‘the truth’ as she does in the book. I will be returning this book and most likely will not choose Reece Witherspoon’s chosen book club selections so blindly in the future.

With that said, Glennon is a very talented author and narrator. I enjoyed her metaphorical writing style and her genuine narrating tone is what kept me to the end.

I loved her thoughts on parenthood and suggest she considers a parenting self-help book. Please just market it as it is. This is not a memoir...
