Unique evil child trope
Revisado: 04-25-25
I picked this up as a last-minute purchase to kill 5 hours of a road trip that my wife and I needed to fill after another book. It was a book of Triana’s that I was unfamiliar with and hadn’t heard much about. Since I’ve enjoyed everything he has written, I figured I would give it a chance. I loved it. It was a very unique take on the evil child trope. It was not exactly extreme horror, and it even had a little bit of a thriller vibe. I’d recommend it to thriller and horror readers alike. The narrator could’ve been better, but sometimes it takes a few tries to find a great narrator.

Sure to gross you out and make you laugh
Revisado: 04-22-25
My wife and I listened to this on Audible while traveling. The narrator was fantastic, switching between US and UK accents. The book started out as gripping, but then it started to become a little hard to follow when a large cast of side characters was suddenly added. I enjoyed the grittiness and dark humor of Edward Lee's writing, as I always do. I think a few of the side characters could have been consolidated, and some of the "slipping" scenes could've been cut a little shorter, as these seemed to drag a little toward the end. Overall, an entertaining read.

An entertaining short listen
Revisado: 04-21-25
Another slam-dunk narration by Lila Kerry. This was the second of the Morbid Curiosities trilogy. I enjoyed this one, and it had some funny Aron Beauregard descriptions, although the randomizer scenes seemed to get a little repetitive. A nice short listen if you want to eat up two hours of a drive.

Excellent creep factor and a great performance
Revisado: 04-20-25
Another intense book with a creepy atmosphere by Nick Roberts. He knows how to get you to picture a house that has problems. I love the engaging writing style that keeps you drawn in. We listened to this on a road trip today, and Spencer Dillehay did a wonderful performance. I loved the demon voices.

Historia
Gordon's name was a joke. It was given to him by Anthony Zola, a controlling, and abusive father, to taunt his wife over her love of cheese, and the fact that she had been steadily gaining weight since their marriage. Andrea was a doting mother, and maybe a little overprotective of her boy, but she didn't see that as a bad thing. On discovering a secret, one the child had been told to keep to himself, everything changes. Now she must do whatever she needs to keep her, and her boy, alive. Needs must.

Part of the extreme horror gauntlet
Revisado: 03-25-25
My second visit with the first book. The first time I read it. After seeing that Lila Kerry was narrating the audiobook, I decided I must listen to it. The first time I read it, the book was shocking and incredibly gross. I often said to myself, “There are things mentioned that no human should say aloud.” Now you can hear the talented Lila Kerry say those things, and she makes them so much more disgusting. You can smell and taste everything in this audiobook, and it is an unpleasant (or pleasant depending on your perspective) experience and will caution those who are squeamish but rally up those who are wanting an extreme horror gross-out fest. I’m sure the people surrounding me in traffic got a nice show watching my facial expressions and gagging motions.
Let's move on to the story. It’s a story about a boy, Gordon, who has abusive parents. His father is physically, mentally, and even s***lly abusive. His mother is abusive in a way where she is overbearing, smothering, sheltering, and mentally abusive. As you can imagine, Gordon doesn’t turn out to be normal and is fascinated with his body as well as his mother’s. Lila Kerry pulled off an amazing performance (as she always does) with all the voices, including the little boy and young adult versions of Gordon. It’s a gross and gruesome tale and will be a story that will be read by many for years to come.
I’m going to invoke some gatekeeping and say, “Reading Zola is part of the gauntlet you must run in order to be called an extreme horror reader.”

Intense read
Revisado: 03-21-25
This is one of those books that turns out different than what you’d expect. Sure, there is a sociopathic boyfriend who does a great job of fooling everyone into thinking he’s a fine young man, but there is much more to that. There is a protective father who likens himself to James Bond and a twist, followed by another twist. The intensity of the violence here was unmatched. It has some gory and gross parts, but I think if you can handle violence, then the gore and gross stuff will be tolerable for you. It is part of the story and not just done for the sake of it. I wouldn’t call this gross extreme horror, but at the same time, it will not bore or disappoint extreme horror fans. The Boyfriend is one of those intense stories that keeps your attention. Just when you think you’ve got it figured out, it changes. I listened to this on Audible, and Alan Turton gave an exceptional performance.

Gross that involves all five senses
Revisado: 03-06-25
Well, this was a treat. More gory and cringy fun brought to you by Sea Caummisar. The book involves all of your senses (even smell), and it’s pretty gross, while exploring a fictional dark web, involving rocks, sutures, crushed light bulbs, and blowtorches. I enjoy books like this because they are such a great escape from the day-to-day world. I also love the reference to the Deadly Reality TV Series, which was one of my favorites. Elizabeth Stockton was a “new-to-me” voice for extreme horror narration and did a great job with all the voices. Her pace and cadence were perfect. This is a story that’ll keep your attention while making you cringe. You’ll find yourself with your legs crossed tightly and your jaw clenched while reading.

At Shadows Casino, this isn’t just a phrase, it’s a grim reality. Far from prying eyes is a world of decadent pleasure, and unimaginable pain, where only the desperate or the rich dare to tread. Cee is the leader of the sinister establishment, but that hasn’t always been her story. Long before she'd ever heard of a parlay or letting it ride, Cee was just a little girl with a daddy who liked to gamble. And when her daddy brought her into Shadows, he made a bet that changed both of their lives forever.

The Black Widow always wins
Revisado: 01-06-25
This was my first Daniel J. Volpe book, and I was not disappointed. I completed the Red Version first, so I had to see the other perspective of The Black Widow. The book mostly takes place during the same timeframe as the Red Version, but there is a lot of flashing back and forth. Since I listened to this on Audible, the flashbacks confused me a little until I realized they were set in a different time. Although the narrator was great, I’d recommend reading instead of listening so you can see the scene breaks and know when a flashback is happening. Many of the same characters are in both books, and some of the dialogue is familiar. For those unsure of which version to read, I recommend both versions but read the Red Version first. I will be looking for more books by Volpe in the future.

Revisado: 01-01-25
Another disgusting book by Aron Beauregard with colorful metaphors. A plot similar to The Squid Game or Saw. The alternate endings were a nice touch. I liked it, but the pace was a little slower in some spots than most of AB’s books. I listened to this on Audible, and John Wayne Comunale gave a great performance.

Creepy with a sense of dread

I liked this one. It was more traditional horror as opposed to extreme horror, as the creep factor built up, and there was a sense of dread throughout it. Lila Kerry pulled off yet another awesome performance.
