Historia
In this exhilarating tale by New York Times bestselling and award-winning author Nnedi Okorafor, a disabled Nigerian American woman pens a wildly successful Sci-Fi novel, but as her fame rises, she loses control of the narrative—a surprisingly cutting, yet heartfelt drama about art and love, identity and connection, and, ultimately, what makes us human. This is a story unlike anything you’ve seen before.

Layered and timely!

Loved the overlapping stories and different voices. This is a beautiful and thoughtful exploration of family, personhood, robotics and automation…and more. Long, but worth it!

Hugo, a gentle red-haired, home-schooled giant, is also in love with Kismet. He’s determined to steal her and is eager to be a home wrecker. Kismet's mother, Crystal, hauls sugar beets for Gary's family, and on her nightly runs, tunes into the darkness of late-night radio, sees visions of guardian angels.

Delightful everyday humans
Revisado: 11-21-24
This book focuses on a set of small-town characters grappling with the human experience: Who should we love? How should we grieve? What is just and right?
It’s smart and thoughtful and a very enjoyable read overall.

Historia
As the child of a Hooters waitress and an ex-pro wrestler, Margo Millet's always known she’d have to make it on her own. So she enrolls at her local junior college, even though she can’t imagine how she’ll ever make a living. She’s still figuring things out and never planned to have an affair with her English professor—and while the affair is brief, it isn’t brief enough to keep her from getting pregnant. Despite everyone’s advice, she decides to keep the baby, mostly out of naiveté and a yearning for something bigger.

Come for the OnlyFans storyline, stay for the absolutely charming tale of a young woman who turns challenges into opportunities. This was so much fun to read, and left me feeling optimistic and hopeful.

Historia
Quarantined in a southwestern desert city in the midst of her high-risk pregnancy, Margo Steines felt her life narrow around her growing body, compelling her to reckon with the violence entangled in its history. She was a professional dominatrix in New York City, a homestead farmer in a brutal relationship, a welder on a high-rise building crew, and a Mixed Martial Arts enthusiast; each of her many lives brought a new vantage point from which to see how power and masculinity coalesce—and how her body paid the price.

Candid and absorbing

I’m so glad Margot was willing to peel back the layers of her life and display the many conflicting, wonderful, painful things there. An absorbing and insightful memoir.

Historia
Set over the course of three summers, this novel follows Stephen, a first-generation Londoner born to Ghanaian immigrant parents, brother to Ray, and best friend to Adeline. On the cusp of big life changes, Stephen feels pressured to follow a certain path—a university degree, a move out of home—but when he decides instead to follow his first love, music, his world and family fracture in ways he didn’t foresee. Now Stephen must find a path and peace for himself: a space he can feel beautiful, a space he can feel free.

A beautiful poetic experience
Revisado: 09-15-23
Loved this book, a story of youth and summer, love and immigration, fathers and mothers and sons. It is quiet, yet deeply moving.
I didn’t realize until the very end that the narrator was the author. No wonder the narrative flowed so smoothly. Highly recommended.

Historia
In this heartrending, lyrical debut work of fiction, Fatimah Asghar traces the intense bond of three orphaned siblings who, after their parents die, are left to raise one another. The youngest, Kausar, grapples with the incomprehensible loss of her parents as she also charts out her own understanding of gender; Aisha, the middle sister, spars with her "crybaby" younger sibling as she desperately tries to hold on to her sense of family in an impossible situation; and Noreen, the eldest, does her best in the role of sister-mother while also trying to create a life for herself.

I was quite taken with this story, and the way these sisters loved each other and found themselves as they navigated trauma and life in America. Highly recommended.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Stunning work
Revisado: 11-21-22
I’m a huge fan of Barbara Kingsolver, and love all of her books. But (for me) none quite reached the level of The Poisonwood Bible…until Demon Copperhead. This is a riveting work, full of characters who feel vivid and true, in a story that is often tragic but never sensational or weepy.
I also can’t say enough good things about the narration. It’s absolutely flawless, and so well done. Bravo.
