Historia
Summer is coming to a close on the East End of Long Island, and Alex is no longer welcome. A misstep at a dinner party, and the older man she’s been staying with dismisses her with a ride to the train station and a ticket back to the city. With few resources and a waterlogged phone, but gifted with an ability to navigate the desires of others, Alex stays on Long Island and drifts like a ghost through the hedged lanes, gated driveways, and sun-blasted dunes of a rarefied world that is, at first, closed to her.

Bleak
Revisado: 08-08-23
Awful. Horrible. Successfully sucks all the glamour and allure out of The Hamptons or even summertime in general. There's nothing likeable in the main character. No pluck or charm. Just pitiful.

Two women. Many aliases. Meg Williams. Maggie Littleton. Melody Wilde. Different names for the same person, depending on the town, depending on the job. She's a con artist who erases herself to become whoever you need her to be—a college student. A life coach. A real estate agent. Nothing about her is real. She slides alongside you and tells you exactly what you need to hear, and by the time she's done, you've likely lost everything.

Angry revenge
Revisado: 07-06-22
I did not care for the plot or characters. The woman who reads Kat also has that annoying sing songy girl voice, where every other word ends on an accented up note, like everything is a question? Hated her voice so much.

Historia
Louisa is the new, brilliant scholarship student. Finding most of the other students at the all-girls Catholic boarding school as icy and unfamiliar as the drafty mansion, she forms a fierce bond with the intense and compelling Victoria, an outlier and student provocateur. Their close bond is soon unsettled by the young, charismatic art teacher, Mr. Lavelle - igniting tension and obsession in the cloistered world of the school. Then one day, Louisa and Mr. Lavelle disappear.

Historia
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

Absolute delight
Revisado: 03-10-18
Would you listen to The Heart's Invisible Furies again? Why?
Classic Dickensian storytelling, with wonderful characters and tragi-comic plot. I loved the narrator and the various voices. There is a delightful tenderness and humor in this book.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Heart's Invisible Furies?
I loved the scene in the confessional but won’t spoil it—hilarious!!!
Which character – as performed by Stephen Hogan – was your favorite?
Mary Margaret was hysterical. Charles and Maude and the novel’s refrain “You’re not a real Avery.” Catherine Goggin at the end of the book. The women in the AIDS ward with several gay ex-husbands. There are so many fantastic characters in the book.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
At the end of the book when Alice has a look of almost love in her eyes.

Historia
Lady Chatterley's Lover, written in 1928, tells the story of a passionate love affair between an upper class woman and her husband’s gamekeeper, which was thought to be so shocking in its content and its straightforward use of explicit sexual terms, that it was not officially published until 1960.

compelling classic
Revisado: 12-18-16
Would you consider the audio edition of Lady Chatterley's Lover to be better than the print version?
I don't think I could make it through the print version. The narration brought the characters to life, and the animated drama made the story more engaging.
Any additional comments?
I enjoyed Lawrence's insight and forward thinking about class, gender and sexuality. Impressed such an explicit book was written, with a female protagonist, when it was and understand why audiences would have found it shocking and unprintable until 1960. It's a timeless, great read and is sure to spark intelligent conversation.

clever surprises
Revisado: 05-24-16
Where does I Let You Go rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is an entertaining listen. The narration switches back and forth between chapters, and the voices were natural, the characters engaging. Some, like the police officers, were a little flat, but the mystery drives the book along swiftly.
What was one of the most memorable moments of I Let You Go?
There is a big twist to the plot, and it does seem like it takes forever, but it is worth the wait. Once the twist is revealed, you'll scratch your head and retrace your steps as the mystery intensifies and you want to keep reading to figure it out.
Any additional comments?
I think this is an underrated book--it's quite good, especially Part II.

somewhat predictable plotting / good storytelling
Revisado: 03-18-16
Would you consider the audio edition of The Life We Bury to be better than the print version?
I enjoyed the narrator
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The pacing kept me interested, event though I could determine the suspects from clues outlined early on. The ending was somewhat predictable, but even so, I enjoyed the story and found its premise interesting/unique.
Which scene was your favorite?
I didn't care for the scenes with his horrible mother, but I appreciated the protagonist's character when dealing with her and in taking care of his disabled brother. He seemed well-suited to exonerate a wrongly accused ex-con.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I was touched by the character of Carl, his heroic stoicism. I think the author nicely developed the theme in all of the main characters, the buried lives we must face. The book gives us characters with humility and integrity, which is often rare in contemporary fiction.

Monsieur Perdu calls himself a literary apothecary. From his floating bookstore in a barge on the Seine, he prescribes novels for the hardships of life. Using his intuitive feel for the exact book a reader needs, Perdu mends broken hearts and souls. The only person he can't seem to heal through literature is himself; he's still haunted by heartbreak after his great love disappeared. She left him with only a letter, which he has never opened.

sentimental
Revisado: 09-20-15
Would you try another book from Nina George and/or the narrators?
No I would not. The premise of the novel sounds so promising, but the writing is too sappy for me.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Unfortunately I listened to several chapters but never got to the ending. Hit the stop button just after the female character says in her silly French accent, "My pussy glistens." No woman EVER would say that. I burst out laughing and that was it for me.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The French accents did not seem authentic. The narrators made the characters seem whiny and silly.
Any additional comments?
I loved this passage: "The only thing he kept were the books from which he'd read to her. He'd read aloud every evening. Lots of verse scenes chapters columns short extracts from biographies . . . little bedtime prayers." Wish the novel had more books and less pussy. LOL
