Historia
If anyone could be considered a Russian counterpart to the infamous British double-agent Kim Philby, it was Oleg Gordievsky. The son of two KGB agents and the product of the best Soviet institutions, the savvy, sophisticated Gordievsky grew to see his nation's communism as both criminal and philistine. He took his first posting for Russian intelligence in 1968 and eventually became the Soviet Union's top man in London, but from 1973 on he was secretly working for MI6.

Fascinating thriller, as good as any fiction but better because it's a true story
Revisado: 10-30-24
This is great storytelling and meaningful historical education at the same time. Here's a hero of the free world few people have any real knowledge of.

New Understanding of John Brown
Revisado: 01-22-23
A superficial knowledge of history makes it impossible to truly understand the person and motives of John Brown. Brands effectively remedies that condition with a rich telling of Brown's life and the aftermath of the cause that he adopted and felt compelled to fight and die for.

Historia
The worst hard-rock mining disaster in American history began a half hour before midnight on June 8, 1917, when fire broke out in the North Butte Mining Company's Granite Mountain shaft. Sparked more than 2,000 feet below ground, the fire spewed flames, smoke, and poisonous gas through a labyrinth of underground tunnels. Within an hour more than 400 men would be locked in a battle to survive. Within three days 164 of them would be dead.

Amazing story with profound implications for our times where unregulated monopolies of the super rich again exploit the common people and use their bought and paid for media to propagate lies and hide their dirty deeds.

Historia
Reporter Sam Kean reveals the periodic table as it’s never been seen before. Not only is it one of man's crowning scientific achievements, it's also a treasure trove of stories of passion, adventure, betrayal, and obsession. The infectious tales and astounding details in The Disappearing Spoon follow carbon, neon, silicon, and gold as they play out their parts in human history, finance, mythology, war, the arts, poison, and the lives of the (frequently) mad scientists who discovered them.

Historia
Can a young war correspondent find herself and follow her heart? In this work of historical fiction, 20-something Annabella “Annie” March arrives in France in 1944 intending to write about the war. Soon, however, Annie begins to distance herself from her sometimes-mentor, sometimes-rival - the great Martha Gellhorn - and Gellhorn’s larger-than-life husband, the novelist Ernest Hemingway. She turns to photography in the hopes of making her own name and, to her delight, discovers that images come more easily than words.

Fairl historical fiction
Revisado: 10-27-21
Interesting story but I found the narration very unappealing. Initially there was just too much emotion in the reader, but that improved. What killed it was her male voice impersonation: so unnecessary and so much like fingernails on a chalk board. The worst narration of any Audible book I've purchased.
Also the storyline falls apart in chapter 17. At one point Adams is talking to his boss Gen. Eberhard. Then suddenly and with no explanation he's talking to Shaw?????

Historia
In this vivid and compelling narrative, the Seven Years' War - long seen as a mere backdrop to the American Revolution - takes on a whole new significance. Relating the history of the war as it developed, Anderson shows how the complex array of forces brought into conflict helped both to create Britain's empire and to sow the seeds of its eventual dissolution. Beginning with a skirmish in the Pennsylvania backcountry involving an inexperienced George Washington, the Iroquois chief Tanaghrisson, and the ill-fated French emissary Jumonville, Anderson reveals a chain of events that would lead to world conflagration.

Historia
In the autumn of 1777, near Saratoga, New York, an inexperienced and improvised American army led by General Horatio Gates faced off against the highly trained British and German forces led by General John Burgoyne. The British strategy in confronting the Americans in upstate New York was to separate rebellious New England from the other colonies.

Excellent History
Revisado: 09-15-20
Despite growing up and living in Upstate NY and being a history buff, I had never studied the battle of Saratoga. This book was excellent in conveying the events and personalities of the battle. The use of primary sources was outstanding. The only criticism is Audible's failure to provide the relevant maps and illustrations as a PDF supplement.

Historia
On May 13, 1945, 24 American servicemen and WACs boarded a transport plane for a sightseeing trip over “Shangri-La,” a beautiful and mysterious valley deep within the jungle-covered mountains of Dutch New Guinea. Unlike the peaceful Tibetan monks of James Hilton’s best-selling novel Lost Horizon, this Shangri-La was home to spear-carrying tribesmen, warriors rumored to be cannibals. But the pleasure tour became an unforgettable battle for survival when the plane crashed. Miraculously, three passengers pulled through.

Historia
Between April and July 1944, Truman Smith flew 35 bombing missions over France and Germany. He was only 20 years old. Although barely adults, Smith and his peers worried about cramming a lifetime's worth of experience into every free night, each knowing he probably would not survive the next bombing mission. Written with blunt honesty, wry humor, and insight, The Wrong Stuff is Smith's gripping memoir of that time.
