A poignant and honest story of friendship
Revisado: 12-05-24
I really liked the bare honesty and bravery of the authors in telling their story. I think everyone should listen to this to become more sympathetic and knowledgable about mental illness.

Historia
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

Revisado: 10-27-24
I could enjoy listening to Stephen Fry reading a phone book if those still exist. This was informational, titillating, and well acted out. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Historia
In this superb collection of short stories, Elizabeth Berg takes us into pivotal moments in the lives of women, when memories and events come together to create a sense of coherence, understanding, and change. In “Ordinary Life,” Mavis McPherson locks herself in the bathroom for a week, shutting out her husband and the realities of their life together — and, no, she isn’t contemplating a divorce. She just needs some time to think, to take stock of her life, and to arrive, finally, at a surprising conclusion.

Historia
A vivid and affectionate portrait of the residents of an English country town in the mid-19th century, Cranford describes a community dominated by its independent and refined women, relating the adventures of Miss Matty and Miss Deborah, two middle-aged spinster sisters striving to live with dignity in reduced circumstances. Through a series of satirical vignettes, Gaskell sympathetically portrays changing small town customs and values in mid-Victorian England....

I’ve listened to this audiobook several times and I’m always charmed. Although I think the narrator mispronounces words here and there, she is a great waiter and wonderful actor.

The narrator brings this story to life delightfully! I was surprised to hear the name Snape, and that Mrs. Gamp had been “borrowed” to work her midwifery in this novel. Thoroughly enjoyable!

Historia
This near-future trilogy is the first chance for English-speaking listeners to experience this multiple-award-winning phenomenon from Cixin Liu, China's most beloved science fiction author. In The Dark Forest, Earth is reeling from the revelation of a coming alien invasion - in just four centuries' time. The aliens' human collaborators may have been defeated, but the presence of the sophons, the subatomic particles that allow Trisolaris instant access to all human information, means that Earth's defense plans are totally exposed to the enemy.

I liked the concept and action, but was put off by a future in which women are still mostly ornamental and men compelled to save them.

Set in a Lower East Side tenement in the early days of the COVID-19 lockdowns, Fourteen Days is an irresistibly propulsive collaborative novel from the Authors Guild, with an unusual twist: each character in this diverse, eccentric cast of New York neighbors has been secretly written by a different, major literary voice—from Margaret Atwood and John Grisham to Tommy Orange and Celeste Ng.

Historia
The narrator of Atwood's riveting novel calls himself Snowman. When the story opens, he is sleeping in a tree, wearing an old bedsheet, mourning the loss of his beloved Oryx and his best friend Crake, and slowly starving to death. He searches for supplies in a wasteland where insects proliferate and pigoons and wolvogs ravage the pleeblands, where ordinary people once lived, and the Compounds that sheltered the extraordinary. As he tries to piece together what has taken place, the narrative shifts to decades earlier. How did everything fall apart so quickly?

A Heartful Memoir
Revisado: 12-14-23
I enjoyed this memoir more than any other memoir I have ever listened to. Well there were some parts that revealed the kind of boy’s club that existed in 1970s rock, they were told with honesty and revealed to me why it’s hard for a girl like me to become a drummer back in the day. As a fellow Ontarian and Jew, many things resonated for me. One of these is the provincial thinking of Ontarians and the other is the hereditary anxiety of the Jewish people. Every time Geddy spoke of his anxiety and his need to keep moving, I nodded my head in agreement.
To be honest, I was never a big fan of Rush. I knew that the musicians were excellent but didn’t like the high-pitched singing and songs which made me think of people who play dungeons and dragons and like fantasy stories. Of course that was back in the day when I was young and pretentious, and I understand now what amazing talent the band has. I did like closer to the heart though because that was less screamy than the other stuff. I really love the two tracks that accompany this audiobook too.
Well done, mischpocha!

I love that this informative and balanced introduction to Judaism was peppered with jokes, puns, and references to Star Trek. I have listened to it several times, and I always get something new. In these days of conflict in the Middle East, it’s good to reaffirm the core beliefs of Judaism.
