Historia
As we age, our memories become unreliable; we misplace things and forget details. In Ultimate Memory Magic, memory expert Jim Karol shows that these side effects of aging are not inevitable. His memory-boosting system, called Cogmental Intelligence, goes beyond preserving mental acuity and actually enhances memory and mental function through lifestyle changes and mental exercises. Concentration, alertness, and focus can all be strengthened - by anyone, at any age.

This is the first book in a long time which I finished and didn't like. I kept hoping it would get better but it didn't. He has some good ideas in here but they are all so incredibly watered down. He did an okay job explaining some extremely superficial information about the brain and memory and all that. Not anything that convinces me he is "an expert" as he claims. Or that he has "a one-on-the-planet brain" as he claims. Terrible writer and teacher, at least in book form. Speaking of which, this book's main purpose seems to be too push his online memory course. I hope that contains actual information and training to do the things he simply talks about here. Not that I'll be paying for it.
He mentions memory techniques but doesn't give you an actual introduction to how to do it well. The example he provides of how to make a memory palace is godawful. He claims to be demonstrating how to remember the years of significant events from Colorado history, such as the gold rush, a referendum giving women the right to vote, etc. But the years are just mentioned along with objects in the palace, they're not made memorable. "And then you see an 1871 teapot..." I'm paraphrasing of course. But what is an 1871 teapot? Ridiculous.
You're better off reading Moonwalking With Einstein by Joshua Foerr. He at least gives an enormous amount of information and demonstrates fantastic memory palace ideas.
Also, I am disappointed that Dr. Amen put his name in this nearly useless book. Dr. Amen had wonderful specific suggestions in his works. For the most part, this book does not. (I resubmitted this review because it wouldn't let me edit it.)
