Historia
Mavis Miller is not a PTA mom. She has enough on her plate with her feisty seven-year-old daughter, Pearl, an exhausting job at a nonprofit, and the complexities of a multigenerational household. So no one is more surprised than Mavis when she caves to Trisha Holbrook, the long-reigning, slightly terrifying PTA president, and finds herself in charge of the school’s brand-new DEI committee. As one of the few Black parents at this California elementary school, Mavis tries to convince herself this is an opportunity for real change. But things go off the rails at the very first meeting.

The white characters were centered entirely too much for what I thought was an African-American book . I do not know a Black woman that would give that much deference to random white people. Her boss, I get, but the PTA mom … please, which made this completely unrelatable. I finished the book but it served as background noise during my work day.

Hunger Games but with relevant messages in our current times. With the character development and back stories for the main players .., I see this being a movie.

Very relatable. To see the story of a family over several generations, and the decisions that they make, and what that means for their descendanys … a storyline that’s weaved amongst my own family.

Historia
Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race”, a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of Black women and men - bodies exploited through slavery and segregation and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a Black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’ attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son.

Historia
Titus Crown is the first Black sheriff in the history of Charon County, Virginia. In recent decades, quiet Charon has had only two murders. But after years of working as an FBI agent, Titus knows better than anyone that while his hometown might seem like a land of moonshine, cornbread, and honeysuckle, secrets always fester under the surface. Then a year to the day after Titus’s election, a school teacher is killed by a former student and the student is fatally shot by Titus’s deputies. As Titus investigates the shootings, he unearths terrible crimes.

Mixed Feelings
Revisado: 12-09-23
The plot twist midway through was surprising and almost too much and had me questioning if I even wanted to finish it the book. There was a passage a bit earlier that hinted at this development but I dismissed it as improbable. Ultimately, I continued and still — even after being a few days removed from wrapping the book — it still has me questioning was that twist even necessary.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Historia
Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Delores Brown has lived a relatively sheltered life. Shielded by her mother’s position as the estate’s medicine woman and cherished by the Master’s sister, she is set apart from the others on the plantation, belonging to neither world. She’d been promised freedom on her eighteenth birthday, but instead of the idyllic life she imagined with her true love, Essex Henry, Pheby is forced to leave the only home she has ever known. She unexpectedly finds herself thrust into the bowels of slavery at the infamous Devil’s Half Acre.

Visceral
Revisado: 08-07-23
Painful to listen to, but necessary. The story and narration were both superb and the only thing that would have added to my enjoyment would have been to hear the antagonist’s fate in detail rather than in the epilogue. I was anticipating the “thwap” version of his story.
Immediately related this to the bans and rewriting of history happening in parts of the country. Books like this do not make me think of myself — and especially not my ancestors — as victims but rather as strong resilient resourceful survivors. Their objective is to mitigate others being seen as devils.

Completely invested
Revisado: 07-29-23
I primarily listen to audible while driving and found myself looking forward to my next drive to get caught up with Ellie and Ruby. Although I was able to predict how their very different stories would ultimately come together, there was still so much more nuance and detail to getting there. I was completely invested and love to get caught up again with a follow-up novel.
