Historia
After the bloody French Revolution, Emperor Napoleon’s power is absolute. When Marie-Louise, the 18-year-old daughter of the King of Austria, is told that the Emperor has demanded her hand in marriage, her father presents her with a terrible choice: marry the cruel, capricious Napoleon, leaving the man she loves and her home forever, or say no, and plunge her country into war. Marie-Louise knows what she must do, and she travels to France, determined to be a good wife despite Napoleon’s reputation. But lavish parties greet her in Paris, and at the extravagant French court, she finds many rivals for her husband’s affection....

Glimpse into Voices from Napoleons court
Revisado: 10-14-24
Cleverly titled and the story drew me right in. I appreciated the multifaceted perspectives as chapters rotated through the voices of different characters. I found Paul to be a particularly important perspective and assisted in providing a deep contrast to the aristocratic families represented. My area of expertise is not this period in history, and I loved the book regardless, but it would have been interesting if parts of the story were more accurate, only because I wonder things like, “when did or how did Marie Louise eventually warm to Napolean?”

The police are skeptical that the deaths involved foul play - so it's up to them to unravel these shocking endings.

Not at all what I expected, but so good!
Revisado: 02-21-23
I don’t know what I had expected from this book, but it delivered so much. It kept me on my toes and really delivered. I loved how the two stories, jacks in the past and Penelope’s in the present were interweaved. Great mystery!

Historia
Golden Globe-winning actor Michael C. Hall (Six Feet Under) performs Truman Capote's masterstroke about a young writer's charmed fascination with his unorthodox neighbor, the "American geisha" Holly Golightly. Holly - a World War II-era society girl in her late teens - survives via socialization, attending parties and restaurants with men from the wealthy upper class who also provide her with money and expensive gifts. Over the course of the novella, the seemingly shallow Holly slowly opens up to the curious protagonist.

My fav short story
Revisado: 01-11-23
This has always been a favourite of mine. A bit tragic, not what people think it will be if they’ve seen the movie. Very good story.
As far as the performance. I really wish they could have had a woman narrate for Holly. The narrator did a fine job, but with such a classic it would have been nice to hear a woman’s voice for Holly.

I enjoyed this book, but wish it would have had a complete ending. I suppose that it’s left open so that readers can decide themselves. I like Vivian though and hope that character continues on…

Historia
Timothy Walter Bolton - better known as Timmy - has spent most of his life as a necromancer. When he isn't terrorising his enemies, he's plotting inside his castle, which is built on top of lightless chasms filled with nameless horrors and beings of a generally malevolent and megalomaniacal nature. But after one of his latest creations, a zombie hydra-dragon-bear, tries to eat him, he decides that maybe it's time to find a new, less dangerous, career.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s full of humour and sort of a sideways fairytale. The performance of the book was done masterfully. It’s exactly as I pictured Timmy’s voice.

Historia
Amelia Peabody embarks on her first Egyptian adventure armed with unshakable self-confidence, a journal for her thoughts, and, of course, a sturdy umbrella. On her way, she rescues Evelyn Barton-Forbes, who has been "ruined" and abandoned on the streets of Rome by her lover. With a typical disregard for convention, Amelia promptly hires her fellow countrywoman as a companion and takes her to Cairo, where strange visitations and a botched kidnapping convince Amelia that there is a plot afoot to harm Evelyn.

Voice of colonisation but decent mystery
Revisado: 09-18-22
I was almost deterred from this book early on due the colonial viewpoints and perspectives. I stuck it through, comparing it to dated references by authors like Agatha Christie. It was a good mystery, otherwise. The reader made the main character sound much older than her 32 years, so I frequently had to remind myself of her age, to avoid picturing a geriatric aristocrat trekking through the desert.

Not a Romance Novel
Revisado: 09-16-22
… but there is still plenty of romance. Good read, one I had on my wish list for a while, but that I was unsure about purchasing for a while. I finally read a review and clarified it wasn’t a romance, so I took the dive. A nice piece of historical fiction that takes you from the gore of the gladiatorial games, to palace intrigues, loves lost and found again, and many fights for survival.

Historia
At the tender age of 14, Livia Drusilla overhears her father and fellow aristocrats plotting the assassination of Julius Caesar. Proving herself an astute confidante, she becomes her father’s chief political asset - and reluctantly enters into an advantageous marriage to a prominent military officer. Her mother tells her, "It is possible for a woman to influence public affairs," reminding Livia that - while she possesses a keen sense for the machinations of the Roman senate - she must also remain patient and practical.

Helps you see Livia from a different perspective
Revisado: 07-12-22
Although this was a work of fiction, I appreciated how this book helps humanise Livia. She’s often portrayed as quite cold, but reading as she navigates hardship during her youth as a young bride and mother as she flees Rome, helps you picture her differently. Hearing her struggle with infertility, and the pressures to reproduce, so that Tativius may have an heir shines a different light on a female that is often vilified (as many strong women were and are still). Negative portrayals and depictions of her are different than those cast on others such as Cleopatra though, so I appreciated the help this novel provided in seeing her and acts attributed to her differently.
The narrator grew on me with time, but initially I wasn’t a fan. Over time her range as Livia aged, reflected on the past, etc., was appreciated and added to the telling of the story.

Historia
New York Times best-selling author Stephanie Dray's historical fiction series comes to a stunning conclusion as the daughter of Cleopatra risks everything to revive her dynasty. After years of abuse as the emperor's captive in Rome, Cleopatra Selene is now a powerful queen, ruling over the exotic kingdom of Mauretania with her husband, King Juba II, by her side. But when a jealous Augustus Caesar demands that her children be given over to him to be fostered in Rome, Selene is drawn back into the web of imperial plots and intrigues that she vowed to leave behind....

Bittersweet end to her life of struggle
Revisado: 05-23-22
I liked this book and appreciate the historic commentary at the end of each book in this series. It helps you better understand choices made by the author throughout. No one wants a story to end sadly, but as this is historical fiction, you know it can't end well, as Cleopatra Selene had a relatively short life. It is nice to watch the evolution of her marriage to Juba and the growth and maturity of her daughter Isidora, however, the end leaves you wishing she were there for longer.
