Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

This book broke my heart and repaired it.
Revisado: 08-06-24
Where do I even begin with this review? This book has easily made it to being in my top favorite books of all time! This book is educational, heart breaking, gut-wrenching, emotional, raw, genuine, healing, and informative. I absolutely adored Jennette McCurdy growing up and knew I had to listen to this book as soon I learned about it.
Jennette does such a phenomenal and efficient job at telling her story without going into too much detail. You may be thinking to yourself "but Cheyenne, I want the details, that's the point of memoirs!" I completely understand where you're coming from. I am meaning it in the way that she does not drone on too much about these very serious topics. She immaculately tells her story to share it with the world, while simultaneously keeping some of it private and for herself. It takes a lot to write her story, fears, failures, hopes, and dreams on paper for the world to ultimately critique. Listening to this book gave me an overwhelming since of pride for Jennette for enduring such horrific things, writing about it, and reliving it by doing so, and continuing to speak out about it.
I truly believe this memoir and her bravery is what kickstarted the movement around Nickelodeon docuseries and advocacy regarding the mistreatment of these children. Jennette's story however goes so much deeper than Nickelodeon and is only really a small part of who she is. I truly enjoyed getting to learn more about HER and her story.
Lastly, it was a true privilege to hear Jennette narrating her own story. As many of us know, authors of these memoirs are really not the best narrator, to no fault of their own. I was worried that would be the case here, but I could not be more wrong. Jennette was meant to narrate. Her narrations were so real, and chilling. I think this really made the book so special for the reader. This will continue to be one of the books I would recommend to anyone. It is raw, funny, genuine, emotional, scary, heartbreaking, and hopeful. Please consider not only reading this book, but listening to it right from Jennette herself. You will not regret it.

Cozy murder mystery with witches? YES PLEASE!!
Revisado: 08-06-24
This was such a cozy and adorable quick read! I got this on "Stuff Your Kindle Day" since the synopsis sounded interesting. I then learned it's written by a local author and moved it up on my TBR list. I really enjoyed this read. It almost emulated a gaming sim where someone moves into town, finds a job, and connects with people for one reason or another. Except in this case, she is connecting with town folks to track down a murder! While I thought the relationship between Ally and Olive felt a little rushed, I am excited to see what unfolds in future books. The author beautifully wrapped up the ending where one could be satisfied reading just the first one, while others are excited to learn the mysteries of Katrina! One other major thing I enjoyed about this book were the twists! While they were unexpected and kept me guessing, they weren't absurd (out of question) or abrupt. Ada Bell naturally transitioned the reader into the twists and I really enjoyed it as it kept the "cozy" element to it. Lastly, the narrator is so special and truly adds to the element of coziness that I am really looking for in these reads. There's just enough playfulness, seriousness, and coziness to make it an enjoyable listening experience.

What a mind twister!!!
Revisado: 08-06-24
I don't know what to expect from this book, but it definitely blew me away. The story is so engaging, interesting, and has such good twists that I did not see coming. It was so easy to get into and to stay hooked on. I had to keep listening. This book is narrated by 4 wonderfully talented narrators that embodied their characters so well. I enjoyed listening to this and I felt so immersed into the story. I cannot recommend it enough!

Phenomenal Story and Cast!
Revisado: 08-06-24
This is the third book by John Marrs that I have read/listened to and it's my absolute favorite! This story is gripping, thrilling, engaging, and overall the perfect suspense I needed. I sometimes struggle with sci-fi/dystopian books, but John Marrs does such a phenomenal job suspending just enough of reality that it is dystopian but still realistic. It's the realism that draws me in.
I loved the dimension of the story and the multiple characters. It can sometimes be challenging to follow a story with too many characters, so I was worried at first. Not only does the author do a wonderful job differentiating the characters, but this all-encompassing cast of narrators sets this book apart! It is so well-done and seamless! I highly recommend this book and narration.

Controversial Review
Revisado: 08-06-24
This is going to be a bit of a controversial review...but these are my honest thoughts. Overall, I am glad I experienced this book. It's a book I wouldn't normally go for, but so many people told me I needed to read this one. So I did. I spent a majority of this book listening to it (HIGHLY recommend as the narrator was phenomenal) and I enjoyed it. However, this book lacked a storyline for me. It is not plot driven. For those of you who enjoy journal entry, here is my life kind of writing - this is perfect! However, I am someone who needs a plot with clear arcs and purpose. This book lacked it for me.
I did appreciate the rawness and realness this book offers. I think there are depths to this book that are truly beautiful, especially highlighting the importance of friendships...and feeling "infinite." While this area of depth was not lacking, the exploration of VERY heavy topics was. I was glad to see the author bringing to light so many important topics, especially in the time it was written, including sexual assault, rape, suicide, substance use, and more. But, the author kind of threw it all in there without going into any depth, or truly addressing it, which I found to be problematic. I understand this is in the lens of a teenager, but I think more should have been said/done with these themes.
I am looking forward to watching the movie adaptation of this book, and I think I will come to love this story a little bit more in the film. I look forward to seeing the embodiment of the characters and cinematography. Anywho, overall, I enjoyed this book, but wouldn't scream from the rooftops about it. Sorry to let anyone down.
You will enjoy this book if you:
-enjoy journal entry style books 📓
-love stories about deep friendships and their meaning ☺️
-want to relive the 1990's angst 🤘🏻
-love an authentic narration
