Retelling of Ancient Rome and first century Christianity
Revisado: 04-11-25
I enjoyed this book. Though there are places that scripture is misquoted and certain historical characters dramatized, it does a great job of presenting its fictional characters in a strong representation of Ancient Rome,

Misleading
Revisado: 03-24-25
I admit I should have checked if this was the full audiobook, I assumed. I paid for what I believed was the full book but was only the first chapter of the book. Misleading, but it seems that Amazon is offering more and more incomplete books, which means it’s best not to trust everything Amazon is offering on face value. How sad, because that does show Amazon’s integrity as a company is not what it seems.

Historia
Audible presents an original production of the aptly named The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Charles Dickens’ final, unfinished novel. Following his untimely death at the age of 58, Dickens managed to publish only six of the 12 planned instalments of the story. Though it has gone on to be one of his more popular titles and the source of inspiration for various television, stage and theatre adaptations, no one knows exactly how Dickens planned to end the mystery.

A great beginning to an unfinished novel!
Revisado: 02-18-25
Dickens starts out strong in this mystery however it is only half finished before he passed away. We will never know was it murder, or only a disappearance, or something totally different? Dickens left few notes because you always used few notes and changed plots and characters as he wrote. He edited as he published installments, even changing his plots because of reader’s reactions. In the end, Dickens left the biggest mystery…how the book would have ended!

Historia
One of Dickens' early works, Nicholas Nickleby combines comedy and tragedy in a tale of triumph over adversity that is interspersed with Dickens' moving condemnation of society's mistreatment of children and the cruelty of the educational system. Young Nickleby struggles to seek his fortune in Victorian England, yet succeeds despite social injustice, in a story that mirrors Dickens' own rise from poverty to great success.

3.5 ⭐️
This is novel is Dickens’ third novel and has some of the weaknesses of his earlier works. The plot languishes in places and there isn’t the complexity to his characters he becomes known for. However, there are bright sparks of his brilliance and the reader can see that he is working out plot themes and character traits he would use in future novels. It is worth the reading. This was a reread for me. I’m definitely a Dickens fan!
I also enjoyed the narrator. Dickens novels were serialized and were written for reading aloud, so they work so well in audio version.

This Audible Exclusive production revisits Charles Dickens’ tragi-comic novel Little Dorrit. Written during the Crimean War, it a story of fortunes won and lost and a masterly portrayal of the failings of Victorian Society, with the ever-present spectre of law enforcement and imprisonment looming over a fearful population. Divided into two parts, Book One: Poverty and Book Two: Riches, Little Dorrit satirises the debtors prisons and the detrimental effect of enforcing a British class system.

In my top ten favorites of Dickens!
Revisado: 10-02-24
This novel, though not perfect, presents some of Dickens best themes. Little Dorrit, Amy our main protagonist, shines the brightest in this story. She’s like the North Star.
Dickens highlights those things he finds detestable in his society yet hope permeates even the darkest of corners. Dickens expertly presents the unshakeable idea that what might be oppressive and confining, what might turn to disparity and hopelessness in some individuals, can also be an opportunity to thrive for others.

I enjoyed this reread of Emma. This isn’t my favorite of Austen’s. In fact, sometimes I find Emma’s character tedious. However, this novel is filled with many great supporting characters and the reader finds relief that Emma eventually finds her way.

An Engaging Book!
Revisado: 08-29-24
I’ve read many books on the Vikings. Some have read like encyclopedias, fine for known facts and information. Others, have read like historical fiction, more myth and story than truth. This author writes something that finds the middle ground, myth and facts in a delightful combination, It is clear he researched this subject. But it’s his experiences and fascination with the Vikings that ties it all together, and makes for an informative and enjoyable read!
I look forward to reading his other books.
