Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Historia
Welcome to the hilarious, strange, elegiac, outrageous world of David Sedaris. In Naked, Sedaris turns the current mania for the memoir on its proverbial ear, mining the exceedingly rich terrain of his life, his family, and his unique worldview, a sensibility at once take-no-prisoners sharp and deeply charitable.

I have liked most of Sedaris's previous work even more, but this is a very enjoyable and entertaining listen. Definitely recommend.

Historia
The road to the modern age of cultural harmony and acceptance is one of the finest feats of human progress, but having said that, there was once a time when the mere doubt of a religious figure's existence was not only punishable by law, it could very well cost a man his life. This was the crime of heresy.

Awful
Revisado: 11-25-17
I expected that this paper (certainly not long enough to be called a book) would synthesize or incorporate in some manner the recent scholarship that has shed much light on the Inquisitions. Instead, the author provides little more than Voltaire's Candide account of the Spanish Inquisition supplemented with some names and dates. Anyone not knowing better will walk away ill-informed, making this paper worse than a waste of time and money. Do yourself a favor and view the lectures from professor Thomas F Madden for a more enlightened recounting of the Inquisitions. It's a shame that universities have stamped out studies on the Middle Ages; I would very much like to get more on this topic from other historians.

Very good book. Kept my interest throughout.

The first chapter is a little rough for those of us with a queasy stomach for detailed gory descriptions of the human body but once past that it is not so gross.

Historia
There was no single, dramatic event that set the current financial crisis off. A whole series of very questionable decisions by many people, in many places, over a period of years, built up the pressures that led to a sudden collapse of the housing market and of financial institutions that began to fall like dominoes as a result of investing in securities based on housing prices. This book is designed to unravel the tangled threads of that story.

Classic Sowell
Revisado: 10-05-09
Sowell is in top form in this lucid explanation of the underlying cause of the financial meltdown. As usual, Sowell goes beyond the mechanical cause-effect of individual economic events, and uncovers the more subtle human motivations that the various players have in the formulation of the rules of the game, which, in turn, lead to the unintended consequences we all have to live with.
