I enjoyed the book
Revisado: 04-25-25
it's a fantastic series that I highly recommend. I'm a little sad that it's going to take so long for the sequel to be released. I'm quite interested in where the story goes from here. the romance was a bit of a surprise when it showed up and now the two are separated.

Historia
Ash’s life is anything but normal these days. Having discovered his Dao, he’s grown in power. Grown to the point that others are now aware of him and that he could be a danger. In this world of martial arts, only the strong and the ruthless survive. Everyone else is merely a stepping stone on their path of Cultivation or an obstacle to be overcome—or knocked down. It’s a world where the strong rule and the weak die.

the absolute truth
Revisado: 04-08-25
it has been a long time since I read book three. honestly all I can remember is the feeling of not liking how the book ended. when I started this one I was reminded that my dislike centered around the story now being told in a prison. as I continue to on with this book the story unfolded in a way that I really liked. it is not a traditional prison. our characters are for all intensive purposes starting almost from scratch but not exactly. in time more characters join our main character. by the time we're rolling in towards the end of the story I find myself absolutely love in the book. then there is a scene where one of the brides tries to surrender in a duel and is murdered. our main character decides to butcher a city to include every man woman and child. the author adds a young girl's head to the scene just for added brutality I guess. to say that I didn't like it would have been an understatement. we get a little bit of an epilogue immediately after. to me it would have been good without the scene that preceded it but with that scene it just Falls flat. additionally we have a narrator change. the original narrator does a fantastic performance. there's no way the transition is going to be seamless but sometimes the new narrators get remarkably close. I enjoyed the old narrators performance and I enjoyed the new narrator's performance. the transition between the two ladies did not bother me in any way shape or form.

pretty good deal
Revisado: 03-25-25
I thought the first book solo when it was a single narrator and never went beyond that because it wasn't really good. in time though they redid it with a dual narration team and I was shocked to see that the series had continued on as long as it has. that said I decided to go ahead and give it a second shot and honestly these days I probably would have continued on past that first book if I had been a Kindle unlimited member or subscriber I guess you would call it. now that I'm at the end of this publisher pack I am interested in continuing the series. it is the same male narrator they've simply added the lady in as far as I can tell. I am familiar with her past performances and I've never seen her deliver less than a fantastic job.

too fast, to shallow
Revisado: 03-20-25
I was looking for something light but I'm not sure that this is what I had in mind. I honestly don't even remember when I picked up this book so it must have been a part of some sort of sale. I believe that it is a trilogy and the publishing company has a habit of releasing it as an Omnibus. so you might want to hold off and get a good deal. I remember picking up Tomb Raider for like $5 on Steam and was super satisfied with that purchase. I think I paid full price for the sequel and it definitely affected my opinion. the narrator did an okay job.

Historia
Silas is growing into the responsibilities weighing him down. Earth is struggling, but there is hope. The deals that Silas has made have brought resources and trainers to Earth. He's helped some leaders gain an understanding of what they will face. His team has continued to grow but now he finds himself facing the greatest challenge to any Forerunner, the Wild Hunt. He'll be hunted but also have to hunt other Forerunners while forging a shaky alliance with those he can't trust. Even more disturbing, it seems like there might be more than one system to choose from.

likes and dislikes
Revisado: 03-11-25
partial spoiler warning because it was telegraphed. After having read this entry I'm wondering whether or not the author is what's called a discovery writer. It would explain some of the decisions made when telling the story. I did not like the motivations for the lady forerunners. I didn't like how one of them died and I really hated how the other one died. It's no secret that one was a traitor and the other was a zealot. But for my point of view the author didn't put in enough work for me to hate the characters enough to justify the way their story thread came to an end. I like the bunny Warriors and the war between the various systems. I really like the interludes. They show up at the right time and I enjoy the different perspectives from the other characters. I can't finish the review without mentioning the Fantastic performance from the narrator. lastly a round of applause for everybody who had a hand in bringing the story to us, the audiobook listeners.

Something always goes sideways, but this is bigger than expected. Maybe it's not an entirely bad thing, though, as mana-infected animals spreading over the world would definitely make everyone more open to the idea of the apocalypse. The question is what was Silas supposed to do about it, though. He still couldn't tell anyone who wasn't inducted about the system. It was time to get creative. If that wasn't enough, though, he still had the wild hunt hanging over his head. Seven days to go, and then he'd be thrown into whatever twisted event the system had cooked up for him.

not bad
Revisado: 03-10-25
when it comes to a sequel and basically looking for everything that made the last one worth listening to and then some. I've read some of this authors past works and it seems to drop off in quality as the series progresses. there's a female character killed off in this book for which I did not like how the author went about it and the White House scene was stupid to me. I do like our characters interactions with his off-world team and the building of an on world team. since early on I figured that there would be some kind of event that would allow Earth to pull into the number one slot. that hasn't happened and there's no guarantee that it will but there's a setup enough that the author may be going in that direction. we'll see in the next installment. lastly I want to give a round of applause to the narrator who has delivered yet another fantastic performance. really well done to everybody who had a hand and bringing this book to the audio audience.

there went the baby with the bathwater
Revisado: 03-09-25
in my experience these system stories have variable times between when the apocalypse starts, but it usually doesn't take too long before we get there. I snuck a peek ahead and was surprised to learn that the first five books in the series are pre-apocalypse. that's the longest that I've ever seen for such a story. I am wondering if the author is going to do five before and five after. with that sneak peek changing my perception of the series I figured that I had a reasonable idea of how the following books would unfold to that point. as you can tell by the title of this review I was wrong. I do not want to risk spoiling anything for anyone, but the very last scene has our main characters sister freshly showered screaming her head off when she spots a Roswell Gray peering through her window.

Historia
Silas is inducted into the System, becoming the last in a long line of Earth's "forerunners." The rewards are great, but the danger is greater. We are not alone in the universe. The fate of five worlds hangs on how their forerunners perform. Will Silas have what it takes to win Earth a place in the multiverse? Or will Earth become another mining world stripped of all resources and left a barren husk floating in the cosmos?

cautiously optimistic
Revisado: 03-09-25
this is not the first series that I have read or listened to by this author. he does connected universes in case there's no warning that you notice when checking out this book. I didn't see one and it bit me in the back side as I was rolling in towards the ending of Crystal core which was notated at the end of the book as being connected to Welcome to the universe and dragon sorcerers. potentially very cool if you love everything that an author writes but if you don't or deliberately skip a series because it didn't sound interesting to you only to them find out that is connected universe that just might affect the review. as a side note I've come across an author relatively recently who is amazing at knocking out the first couple books of a series and then there can seem to land the ending. this author reminds me of that fellow, but to a lesser degree. it's more that because of the connected universe the endings are watered down if you haven't already been reading the other series. with The Upfront warning out of the way, we'll move on to the fact that the story setting starts before the Apocalypse takes place when the system is introduced. there are multiple worlds competing to see who gets screwed over the least. each world has its own Heroes and one of them is hunting the others. the uncle is chosen as one of these Heroes and is then murdered. his position was supposed to go to the father who unfortunately dies of cancer before he can take up the mantle. this brings us to our hero of the series who is a 22-year-old kid looking out for his mother and sister as he's dealing with the death of his father and preparing to go to college. time is short before the apocalypse starts and our hero is well behind his fellow Heroes of Earth. now it's up to him to adapt or die in his bid to do his part to save Humanity.

The Beginning After the End: Publisher's Pack 2 contains books 3 and 4 of The Beginning After the End series, Beckoning Fates and Horizon's Edge. Though Arthur Leywin would like nothing more than to pursue his studies at the esteemed Xyrus Academy, where he hopes to push his already potent magical abilities to new plateaus and perhaps discover something more about his reincarnation into this world, he finds the politics of the school’s halls even more challenging to navigate than those of the council chambers he once inhabited as King Grey.

good story with an asterisk
Revisado: 03-04-25
I do my best to separate a personal taste from the quality of the work when I choose to leave a review. the writing is solid all the way around and the narrator delivered a fantastic performance. that said I absolutely hate Cliffhangers. it seems to me that the author is going to be finishing off each book with a cliffhanger. this really is only a problem the first time reading a series assuming that it's not a completed series. fortunately for me at the time I'm leaving this review the first 11 books are already out in ebook form. I'm afraid I didn't pay attention to how many of them have received the audio treatment. I will say that the ebooks are not a part of the Kindle unlimited program and the price of the ebooks continues to increase as the series progresses.

Historia
I never believed in the whole “light at the end of the tunnel” folly where people, after having a near-death experience, would startle awake in a cold sweat exclaiming, “I saw the light!” But there I was, in this so-called “tunnel” facing a glaring light, when the last thing I remembered was sleeping in my room - the royal bed-chamber, as others called it. Had I died? If so, how? King Grey once benefited from unrivaled strength, wealth, and prestige in a world governed by martial ability but now finds himself reborn in a society dominated by magic.
