Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Disappointing rehashed plot, mediocre narrator
Revisado: 11-29-24
I was so excited for the latest installment of the Three Pines Series (Audible version) The Grey Wolf began with Ms. Penny introducing a new narrator, who was French Canadian. Hmmmm....I thought, this could be much more authentic. Unfortunately, while it may have been authentic it was not great narration. But more disappointing is that we're back at the monastery again. Why? There are so many interesting characters in Three Pines which could be continued to be explored. Instead we're hauled back into the woods of Quebec with a weird environmental plot. The book felt like Ms Penny had a book contract to fulfill, and so rehashed previous books. I didn't finish it. Very disappointed.

Historia
Laurel Spellman is the most respected and feared literary critic in America. For years she’s written acid-etched reviews, gleefully goring sacred cows, anointing Great American Novelists, keeping the mob of scribbling authors in their place while enjoying all the perks of her position. She doesn’t want to lose her spot on top of the literary world - not any more than she wants to replace her decades-old cartoon head shot with a new photograph. But when Laurel ends up taking a group of bibliophiles on a tour of literary Paris, she meets her worst nightmare: Tess Kravitz.

A leading light on the alternative and indie music scene for nearly 40 years, Jeff Tweedy is a master of the art in the artifice of songwriting. In this volume, Tweedy introduces listeners to the people, occasions, and frames of mind that have inspired but don’t necessarily populate the iconic songbooks of bands Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, and Tweedy.

Historia
Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence. Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning.

Historia
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

Meh. So disappointed!
Revisado: 09-07-19
An obnoxious, privileged protagonist who, I suppose, is here to inspire us to live life to its fullest, damn the consequences? Ugh. I found her to be fluff wrapped in impossible circumstance dipped in bilious self-centered narcicism. Some of the details slipped into the stories of characters around her we're fascinating but not enough to rescue this huge disappointment of a book. Blair Brown's talents couldn't save it.

Historia
Being on the murder squad is nothing like Detective Antoinette Conway dreamed it would be. Her partner, Stephen Moran, is the only person who seems glad she's there. The rest of her working life is a stream of thankless cases, vicious pranks, and harassment. Antoinette is savagely tough, but she's getting close to the breaking point. Their new case looks like yet another by-the-numbers lovers' quarrel gone bad. Aislinn Murray is blond, pretty, groomed to a shine, and dead in her catalogue-perfect living room, next to a table set for a romantic dinner.

Deliciously smart writing!
Revisado: 01-04-17
Where does The Trespasser rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It's quite good! If you've enjoyed listening to Gerard Doyle and/or are a fan of Ireland and an Irish accent, you'll most likely enjoy this, too. Calling this a "police procedural" makes it sound dull - it is anything but! I was on the edge of my seat!
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Trespasser?
It's a small throwaway line, but I thought it was hilarious when the cops referred to women who had been in affairs gone bad as "bunny boilers" (in reference to Glen Close's character in the movie "Fatal Attraction).
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Who will you trust?
Any additional comments?
Beautifully written dialogue, gripping plot, interesting turns, emotionally smart, excellent narration. French presents a protagonist whose anger and frustration are as palpable as they are understandable. She describes perfectly that awful feeling when you realize that you may have absolutely everything wrong. No annoying red herrings, just a fabulous plot slowly unraveling... Can't say enough about this book - highly recommended!

Great narrator, gripping but violent story.
Revisado: 11-27-16
Would you consider the audio edition of The Dead Yard to be better than the print version?
I LOVE Gerard Doyle's narration. However, having read the Sean Duffy series before this (Michael Forsythe) I'm finding that there are a LOT of similarities (MI-6, attractive female operatives, etc.). That said, I was enthralled, and am getting ready to listen to the next one right now!
Any additional comments?
Graphic violence. And sex scenes best listened to with headphones and not in the kitchen with everyone walking through (my experience...)

Few writers capture the complexities, pain, and joy of relationships - between friends, family members, husbands and wives, or lovers - as beloved New York Times best-selling author Dorothea Benton Frank. In this charming, evocative, soul-touching novel, she once again takes us deep into the heart of the magical Lowcountry, where three amazing middle-aged women are bonded by another amazing woman's death.

Save yourself - pass this one by!
Revisado: 08-28-16
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
A totally different story written by a totally different author. This was embarrassingly, stereotypically anti-feminist. All of the characters were literally "saved" by men - all were married off by the end. The protagonist was judgemental, martyr-ish, and pretty much unbearable. I believe I purchased this as one of those "oh, you'll love this!" sales. I'll be a bit more discerning next time...
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
no.
