Historia
Nicholas Herman (c. 1605-1691) was born in Lorraine, France and served as a cook and shoe repairer at a Carmelite monastery. He was only a lay member of the order, and walked with a limp from injuries incurred as a soldier, yet his private thoughts provide a wellspring of devotional insight and refreshment.

One of my top five favourite books of ALL TIME
Revisado: 09-03-14
If you could sum up Practice of the Presence of God in three words, what would they be?
Intimate Adoring Conversation
What did you like best about this story?
That it is 400 years old and translated into the exquisite language of 19th century English. That it is the way to learn to live the first and most important reason you are here: to love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.
Which scene was your favorite?
Brother Lawrence in a letter writes, ``you may think this is all I talk about, It is true.`` I love that line, It is true. The narrators voice brings the heart of BL to life! Bravo Scott Brick! I can see, feel and aspire to his pure heart of integrity, to `think nothing, say nothing and do nothing but for the love of God. Imagine a man like that, a women like that! I love how BL uses feminine pronouns to describe his soul.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It makes me fall on my knees. It makes me change the way I think, speak, reflect.
Any additional comments?
He ``suffered much`` the first ten years practicing the presence of God. It`s not like flipping a switch it is a consistent forming of the mind and spirit. If it would take me ten years to pursue the heart of God, and find it the way Brother Lawrence found it, then I will start my quest now.

Historia
In February 1915, a member of one of Canada’s wealthiest families was shot and killed on the front porch of his home in Toronto as he was returning from work. Carrie Davies, an 18-year-old domestic servant, quickly confessed. But who was the victim here? Charles "Bert" Massey, a scion of a famous family, or the frightened, perhaps mentally unstable Carrie, a penniless British immigrant?

If you could sum up The Massey Murder in three words, what would they be?
fascinating history/story
What other book might you compare The Massey Murder to and why?
Mary Queen of Scots, for the similar soul-wrenching circumstances of the lead lady
Which scene was your favorite?
The bio's of Hart Massey, Bert Massey, Florence Eustace . . . all the players in the drama come off the page. I cannot pick one scene. Many of the names and stories are new to me while others are familiar. But they all overlapped in this era of Toronto's history. They used the same old streets that are there now, Spadina, Yonge, Adelaide, and shopped in the same stores, Eaton's, Simpson's. The book is like walking through a black and white picture veil of 1915 and on the other side it is all brought back to life, colour and action!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Nearly
Any additional comments?
I will listen to it again so I can soak up all the beautifully presented history.

We find purpose in suffering.

In Not a Fan Idleman uses biblical examples to show how the people who met Jesus also had to decide if they were fans or followers, and what it meant for them to then become followers.

I love Hudson Taylor
Revisado: 05-08-12
Where does Hudson Taylor's Spiritual Secret rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This book is in my top 20
Would you recommend Hudson Taylor's Spiritual Secret to your friends? Why or why not?
YES. I recommend this story. It one of the greatest I have ever read. I read it first 15 years ago and listened to it--thanks to Audable-- last month. It is rich!
Did Raymond Todd do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Yes, nice voice
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Hudson Taylor's daughter dies, then later, his wife dies. And that man loved his family, you can feel that in the way he loves and accepts the Chinese he loves and adores his own family. The loss of those dear people was heartbreaking and inspiring all at once.
Any additional comments?
Hudson Taylor was one of the first missionaries to accept woman as equal, equal in the work and equal in their value to God. He was a great man. If there was another biography (with lots of excerpts from his own corrospondance--I love that in a book!) then I would buy anohter version of his biography.
