Historia
When rock guitarist Ash Hudson suffers a career-ending hand injury, she seeks out the only thing that can heal it - her hometown's darkest secret. For decades the residents of Hollow Hills, Pennsylvania, have offered their diseased and injured body parts to a creek demon named Snare. In return, Snare rewards its Traders with healthy replacement parts. There's only one catch: if Traders leave town, their new parts vanish forever. Ash wants a new hand, but living in Hollow Hills isn't an option. Not when her band is one gig away from hitting the big time.

Good story but absolutely brutal
Revisado: 04-20-25
The author built a very clever premise and story and the characters felt well developed. I really enjoyed the concept of the creek demon. The writing really got me invested in the story but there was just no payoff in the end for that. It was brutal and not even in a heartbreaking way, just in a frustrating way where nothing at all works out the way you want it to. Some of the frustrating parts felt completely unnecessary as well, like things just kept happening to raise the stakes higher and higher but for no reward in the end. The ending sequence dragged on for a very long time, felt repetitive, and was just one gut punch after another. The end makes you feel like you suffered along with every one of the characters and for nothing.
Besides all that, I did love the narrator's performance, but it was completely undermined by the audio quality. Overall, this book was a frustrating experience, although unique and interesting. I wouldn't recommend it without some huge caveats attached.

a good slow burn thriller
Revisado: 04-20-25
The narrators did a great job, especially Kirsten Potter. The story was compelling even if a little predictable. There were times where I felt Carly & Viv's chapters should have played in reverse order, because hearing some of Carly's chapters let me guess pretty easily what was going to happen to Viv next. There were also a LOT of repeated lines that were supposed to be private thoughts of the narrator recalling something they'd heard or seen, and it was hard to follow at times when you're just listening rather than reading the physical copy. It also felt very redundant after a while and started to lose the emphasis it was supposed to provide. I felt like the end of the story wrapped up in a weird, rushed way and the added bit of unnecessary romance at the end almost felt like an afterthought that came out of nowhere. Overall, I did really enjoy the story and piecing together the mystery. I would still recommend it as a good mystery thriller.

Historia
It's winter in the Catskills and Mitchell's Inn, nestled deep in the woods, is the perfect setting for a relaxing—maybe even romantic—weekend away. So when the weather takes a turn for the worse, and a blizzard cuts off the electricity—and all contact with the outside world—the guests settle in and try to make the best of it. Soon, though, one of the guests turns up dead—it looks like an accident. But when a second guest dies, they start to panic. Within the snowed-in paradise, something—or someone—is picking off the guests one by one.

Not a murder mystery, just a character drama.
Revisado: 02-08-25
90% of the book was just dredging through backstory and personal dramas for the never-ending cast of characters. There were so many characters being introduced, right up to the last few chapters, that it was hard to keep up with who was who. It didn't feel like a murder mystery, it felt like a character drama and there just happens to be a dead body in the room. None of the characters' stories felt relevant or had hardly any bearing on how they responded to the murders. I found myself dreading each time the perspective flipped to a different character because I knew it would just be even longer until we got to the next plot point. The narrator was decent enough, although her inflections didn't always match the description of what was being said. For instance, the character would be described as saying something "shrilly" but her tone was fairly even and flat. Overall, I would not recommend this book.

Easy to finish.
Revisado: 03-18-20
The two narrators weren't different enough to keep from getting them confused. I enjoyed the story, although it was a tad predictable. I felt the characters fell a little flat, and in perfect cookie-cutter archetypes. A little lacking in originality, but a good thriller that was easy to finish.

Thought-provoking and enticing
Revisado: 09-20-18
All three narrators give an excellent performance and accurately convey their characters. The story kept me very on edge and wanting for answers, and really drew me in with all of the questions surrounding Area X. In the end, not all answers are given and the reader must draw some of their own conclusions, but not without plenty of details. The nature of the story is thrilling and spooky but with little action. I thoroughly enjoyed it and have listened to it twice.
