Historia
Over two grim nights in Los Angeles, the young followers of Charles Manson murdered seven people, including the actress Sharon Tate, then eight months pregnant. With no mercy and seemingly no motive, the Manson Family followed their leader's every order. Twenty years ago, when journalist Tom O'Neill was reporting a magazine piece about the murders, he worried there was nothing new to say. Then he unearthed shocking evidence of a cover-up behind the "official" story, including police carelessness, legal misconduct, and potential surveillance by intelligence agents.

Historia
From the Bowery Boys and the Five Points Gang through the rise of the Jewish "Kosher Nostra" and the ascendance of the Italian Mafia, mobsters have played a major role in the city's history, lurking just around the corner or inside that nondescript building. Bill "the Butcher" Poole, Paul Kelly, Monk Eastman, "Lucky" Luciano, Carlo Gambino, Meyer Lansky, Mickey Spillane, John Gotti - each held sway over New York neighborhoods that nurtured them and gave them power.

Plenty of places to check out but..
Revisado: 11-07-23
The narrator mispronounced several names & places of famous mafioso and their crime’s that it was a little annoying. Especially calling Carmine Persico Perseeco . But otherwise a good listen. Might be handy to have a map of NYC on hand to pinpoint all the places. Would recommend a listen.

Historia
There were few experienced swimmers among over 1,300 Lower East Side residents who boarded the General Slocum on June 15, 1904. It shouldn't have mattered since the steamship was only chartered for a languid excursion from Manhattan to Long Island Sound. But a fire erupted minutes into the trip, forcing hundreds of terrified passengers into the water. By the time the captain found a safe shore for landing, 1,021 had perished. It was New York's deadliest tragedy prior to September 11, 2001.

A forgotten story unfortunately
Revisado: 07-01-23
Most New Yorkers have never heard of The Slocum disaster and that is unfortunate. Over a thousand dead mostly women and children you would think it would be at least mentioned in New York City history. This is a great listen for anyone who is interested in NYC history. Author does a good job and the narration is spot on . The fire and direct aftermath are tough to listen to. The missing and the funerals of whole families is gut wrenching stuff. But should never be forgotten. Highly recommended.

Historia
It was an explosion that reverberated across the country—and into the very heart of early-twentieth-century America. On the morning of October 1, 1910, the walls of the Los Angeles Times Building buckled as a thunderous detonation sent men, machinery, and mortar rocketing into the night air. When at last the wreckage had been sifted and the hospital triage units consulted, twenty-one people were declared dead and dozens more injured. But as it turned out, this was just a prelude to the devastation that was to come.

A fascinating tale
Revisado: 06-17-23
Never heard about this story but boy is it a doozy . Larger than life characters , some I only knew little if nothing about, are covered here very fairly I thought by Blum . He weaves the violence of the Labor Wars against the birth of Hollywood quite well .
Mayer's narration is spot on . He does a fine job with all the characters, and there is a lot, so he doesn't sound the same all the way through. Just enough so you know it's a different person talking. bad narration can kill even the best of audible books. No worries there. As for the cast of characters they are a varied lot . Some good and other downright despicable. Surprisingly to me Darrow comes across as a real sleazy character. But I'd definitely want him as my lawyer especially in this circumstance. Burns is another fascinating guy . D W Griffith who rounds out the 3 major characters really is establishing Hollywood as we will know it . All in all a great listen about a part of American history that I and I'm sure many never heard of. highly recommended .

Historia
One night in 1967, 26-year-old John Donohue - known as Chick - was out with friends, drinking in a New York City bar. The friends gathered there had lost loved ones in Vietnam. Now, they watched as anti-war protesters turned on the troops themselves. One neighborhood patriot came up with an inspired - some would call it insane - idea. Someone should sneak into Vietnam, track down their buddies there, give them messages of support from back home, and share a few laughs over a can of beer. It would be the Greatest Beer Run Ever.

Get your mob on
Revisado: 06-14-21
Ok I read this book when it first came out & was thinking when's the movie version coming ? All these years later it finally made it to Audible but I'm guessing no movie . Looking back now there are some mistakes , Featherstone was not a Green Beret, & maybe you take some of it with a grain of salt, especially first hand accounts but hey it's a good tail of 70's & 80's NYC & how the mob ran things . Good narration , lots of characters and a few heroes . Overall a good summer listen .

Revisado: 06-14-21
Having exhausted pretty much all the NY, Philly, Boston ,Chicago, even Cleveland , true mob stories I was on the hunt for somewhere else . Well did I find a good one in Detroit . I had heard about the Purple Gang when in reading up on Capone & Chicago but only slightly mentioned . Here Burnstein goes into great detail & doesn't stop there . All the ethnic groups get a good telling & of course Hoffa is not left out . Fascinating stuff . There's a lot of names & nick names some may find to much but if you like stories about gangsters this can't be beat .

John Plaster’s riveting account of his covert activities as a member of a special operations team during the Vietnam War is “a true insider’s account...this eye-opening report will leave readers feeling as if they’ve been given a hot scoop on a highly classified project” (Publishers Weekly). Code-named the Studies and Observations Group, SOG was the most secret elite US military unit to serve in the Vietnam War - so secret that its very existence was denied by the government.

Historia
In 1973 US participation in the Vietnam War ended in a cease-fire and a withdrawal that included promises by President Nixon to assist the South in the event of invasion by the North. But in early 1975, when North Vietnamese forces began a full-scale assault, Congress refused to send arms or aid. By early April that year, the South was on the brink of a defeat that threatened execution or years in a concentration camp for the untold number of South Vietnamese who had supported the government in Saigon or worked with Americans.
