Not what I expected
Revisado: 10-21-20
The story line is decent, but the narration drove me crazy. The scratchy squeeky old people voices made me want to tear my hair out. I am still listening to it, determined to finish it no matter what but my vote is to skip this one. Narration makes the book and if its poor, I find and will rate the book a flop

Stick to riding horses Rita Mae
Revisado: 12-13-19
First let me say I love the Sister Jane Series, I read the books. But I wanted to listen to them while working. I did not realize that Rita Mae herself was the narrator..OMG..... the narration is horrid and irritating (at best) . I will suffer thru the bad narration... and I hope the others in the series get better.

Historia
Snow is a rarity in Maura Donovan's small village in County Cork, Ireland, so she wasn't sure what to expect when a major snowstorm rolled in around Sullivan's pub. But now she's stranded in a bar full of patrons - and a suspected killer in a long-ago murder. Maura's been in Ireland less than a year and hasn't heard about the decades-old unsolved crime that took place nearby, let alone the infamous suspect, Diane Caldwell.

Not happy
Revisado: 07-06-18
One thing that really bothered me about this book (and I have listened to all of them in the series so far) is she makes this woman (Moira) sound so dam dumb most of the time, but then allows her to be smart enough to solve a 20 year old murder... The woman lived in BOSTON, but the author has her whining about the weather. She complains repeatable that she isn't sure "what to do" with the coming snow storm. No coat, no boots, should she stock up some food ? OH PLEASE... the woman is in her mid 20s and lived in BOSTON.... did Moira live in a bubble. ? So she runs around asking everyone's advice about what she should do. Give the girl some gonads please !

Disappointed
Revisado: 10-03-17
I was really surprised with this book by C. Brown. First off the narrator is awful... the voices were flat, no emotion. The storyline was really lacking... I found characters were added without reason, no substance, and transparent. It just felt as if this book was thrown together quickly with little thought to building the characters. I struggled to get thru the book...ugh

If you could sum up Velva Jean Learns to Fly in three words, what would they be?
interesting, different, southern
Have you listened to any of Emily Durante’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I do wish that Jenna L was the narrator again, I fell in love with her voice and narration in THE HELP. I still enjoyed the story, I found it very believeable.... with several twists and turns ... and I am looking forward to the next book

Historia
Autumn brings its own haunting beauty to the sun-soaked beaches and dunes on Isle of Palms, where Olivia “Lovie” Rutledge lives in her beloved Primrose Cottage with her daughter, Cara. Looking back as summer fades, Lovie can remember many island summers, but especially one. . . .In 1974, America was changing, but Charleston remained eternally the same. Lovie had always done what was expected — marrying the son of a historic Charleston family, Stratton Rutledge, and turning over her fortune and fate to his control. But one thing she steadfastly refuses to relinquish: her family’s old seaside cottage. The precious summers spent on the barrier island are Lovie’s refuge. Here, she can escape with her children from the social expectations of her traditional Southern mother, and her overbearing husband’s ambition and philandering. Here, she indulges her lifelong vocation as a “Turtle Lady,” tending the loggerhead sea turtles that lay their eggs in the warm night sand and then slip back into the sea. This summer, however, is different. Visiting biologist Russell Bennett arrives on the island to research the loggerheads. What begins as a shared passion for the turtles changes to a love far more passionate and profound than Lovie has ever known — but one that forces her to face the most agonizing decision of her life. For Charleston’s elite, divorce is an unforgivable scandal, and Stratton’s influence is far-reaching. If Lovie dares to dream beyond a summer affair, she risks losing everything: her reputation, her wealth, even her precious children.Beach House Memories — a poignant and emotional tale of a strong, passionate woman torn between duty and desire, between the traditions of the old South and the social changes sweeping America — will capture your heart. For Lovie, it is an empowering journey of seasons of self-discovery. Until this autumn, this time of changing tides, of holding on and letting go. . . .“This luminous tale — set in the South Carolina Lowcountry that we both love so deeply — was hard to put down. Fans of The Beach House will at last discover what happened during the summer of 1974. But readers new to Mary Alice Monroe need not worry, for this emotional story of love and loss stands alone.” — New York Times bestselling author Dorothea Benton Frank
