Historia
For years as an award-winning war reporter, Sebastian Junger traveled to many front lines and frequently put his life at risk. And yet, the closest he ever came to death was the summer of 2020 while spending a quiet afternoon at the New England home he shared with his wife and two young children. Crippled by abdominal pain, Junger was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. Once there, he began slipping away. As blackness encroached, he was visited by his dead father, inviting Junger to join him.

Interesting story and personal account. Not sure he’s covering any new ground or insight. When he gets into discussion about quantum mechanics it got more interesting.

Awe is mysterious. How do we begin to quantify the goose bumps we feel when we see the Grand Canyon, or the utter amazement when we watch a child walk for the first time? How do you put into words the collective effervescence of standing in a crowd and singing in unison, or the wonder you feel while gazing at centuries-old works of art? In Awe, Dacher Keltner presents a radical investigation and deeply personal inquiry into this elusive emotion.

Really dry
Revisado: 02-24-24
I usually really like books like this. I read several dozen with similar concepts. The author, while covering interesting content, is quite dull in the delivery.

Historia
They were the Savages. Raiders from our distant past. Elites who left Earth to create tailor-made utopias aboard the massive lighthuggers that crawled through the darkness between the stars. But the people they left behind on a dying planet didn't perish in the dystopian nightmare the Savages had themselves created: they thrived, discovering faster-than-light technology and using it to colonize the galaxy ahead of the Savages, forming fantastic new civilizations that surpassed the wildest dreams of Old Earth.

One of the best GE extended universe books
Revisado: 09-21-21
I’ve read all the GE books and most of the supplementary books and series. I just re-listened and liked it even more the 2nd time.
I’m a huge fan of RC Bray and HATE when a narrator is changed but Lang is exceptional.
For those looking for a lot of back story on Rechs and Goth Sullus this is the book.

Every disaster brings an opportunity. Goth Sullus and his empire have fallen. With the Legion and the rest of the galaxy watching from the still-smoldering galactic core, Carter, a former legionnaire turned private contractor, and Jack Bowie, a Navy spy with nowhere left to turn, sign up to work for an enterprising private contractor looking to make a statement on the planet Kublar. Plans are in motion dating back to the Savage Wars, and as the galaxy rushes to fill in the vacuum created by the fall of the Imperial Republic, the bodies are hitting the floor.

Narration is HORRIBLE... story a solid 3/5
Revisado: 07-15-21
I loved the first 5 parts of the series (10 or 11 books in total) but this book seemed to be written by different authors and the narration was absolutely abominable. I almost didn't finish the book because the narration was so grading. The story had hints of intrigue and plot reversals but nothing on the level of GE season 1. I hope they bring back RC Bray and a stronger story.

Great resource for those suffering or those caring for those suffering from Alzheimer’s or Dementia
Revisado: 08-18-20
This book is an amazing look at how best to deal with complex chronic disease. So much of our current approach is based on one treatment and one approach. It turns out humans are complex and many of the complex diseases and conditions we face require a multifaceted approach.
I hope people read this and follow the advice. As someone in the late 40s but noticing brain fog and general memory lapse I was terrified as to my future prospects. My grandmother spend 14 with Alzheimer’s and died a shell of her former self and and father has been able to reverse many of his symptoms based on a multifaceted approach (food, sleep, stress management, BHRT, and exercise). He’s almost 80 and doing extremely well.
This book is a great addition to tools we need to overcome this plague.

Historia
In this must-listen book for anyone striving to succeed, pioneering psychologist Angela Duckworth shows parents, educators, students, and businesspeople - both seasoned and new - that the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but a focused persistence called "grit". Why do some people succeed and others fail? Sharing new insights from her landmark research on grit, MacArthur "genius" Angela Duckworth explains why talent is hardly a guarantor of success.

I wanted to love this book...
Revisado: 06-10-16
The idea of grit is fascinating and one I think is generally undervalued. While this book was good, it was not great. I read about a book a week and there are certainly better books out there. My main issue is the book contained a lot of personal experiences with little hard research. Perhaps there isn't a lot of data out there but again the content could have been more compelling.

J. Kael Weston spent seven years on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan working for the US State Department in some of the most dangerous frontline locations. Upon his return home, while traveling the country to pay respect to the dead and wounded, he asked himself: When will these wars end? How will they be remembered and memorialized? What lessons can we learn from them?

This is a comprehensive look at war and how it affects all sides. Many parts are hard to get through but it's important for us as a national to know what our actions do on a personal level.
It's certainly worth the time and is a unique view into how wars are really fought and won or lost.

Historia
In The Brain That Changes Itself, Norman Doidge described the most important breakthrough in our understanding of the brain in 400 years: the discovery that the brain can change its own structure and function in response to mental experience - what we call neuroplasticity. His revolutionary new book shows, for the first time, how the amazing process of neuroplastic healing really works. It describes natural, noninvasive avenues into the brain provided by the forms of energy around us.

Why do most new businesses fail, yet a few entrepreneurs have a habit of winning over and over again? The shocking discovery of years of research and trial is that most startups fail by doing the "right things," but doing them out of order. In other words, human nature combined with our entrepreneurial drive puts us on autopilot to become part of the 70% to 90% of ventures that fail.

I'm generally not a fan of business books, but...
Revisado: 01-11-15
This one is an exception. It is a quick read/listen (as I knocked it out on a flight to Asia), and many of the concepts are spot on. For anyone building a business or trying to make their business better, this is a great resource.
After reading it, and digesting many of the concepts, I've assigned it as mandatory reading for my staff and recommend it highly to my business partners. Had I read this years ago during my first start-up, I possibly would have avoided many costly errors and mistakes. In the end not having NISI as a resource to reference probably cost me and my initial investors several million dollars.
I'd highly recommend you pick up a copy.

Best RN Series since Jack Aubrey and Hornblower
Revisado: 06-23-14
Russell is a very good story teller and the story is strong. It's the best Royal Navy series outside of Master and Commander and the Hornblower books. The three books available on Audible are worth the download and the narration is top notch.
