Well told tale....well written and well narrated. A much more believable version of the Medusa's story. Highly recommended.

Historia
The year is 500 AD. Sisters Isla and Blue live in the shadows of the Ghost City, the abandoned ruins of the once-glorious mile-wide Roman settlement Londinium on the bank of the River Thames. But the small island they call home is also a place of exile for Isla, Blue, and their father, a legendary blacksmith accused of using dark magic to make his firetongue swords—formidable blades that cannot be broken—and cast out from the community. When he dies suddenly, the sisters find themselves facing enslavement by the local warlord and his cruel, power-hungry son.

Excellent, But Not What You Expected!
Revisado: 01-25-25
If you saw the movie version, forget it! While there are some similarities, this is a very different story. The characters are more complex, & magic is less fairytale-like. I enjoyed the movie, but with the novel, & the characters in it, I felt a much stronger connection.

Excitement & Archaeology
Revisado: 12-06-24
Once again the Emersons do not disappoint! Love the combination of ancient history/archaeology, mystery & action. Add a dash of comedy & over the top characters, it is perfect escapism from the "real world".

Still Fascinating After All These Years...
Revisado: 10-31-24
I confess, at age 7 yrs and few years longer, I was obsessed with dinosaurs. I collected dinosaurs models & begged my parents for books on dinosaurs. Library books were great, except I had to return them! I made dioramas copied from scenes in the books & drove everyone mad with my talking about dinosaurs. Eventually I moved on to other studies/obsessions, though I've always retained my fondness for anklysaurs & triceratops. This book made "catching up with old friends" very enjoyable. The writing was accessible & informative. The narration was excellent. Looking forward to Dr. B's next work on early mammals!

Historia
If it weren’t for Emma Johnson, Caryn Johnson would have never become Whoopi Goldberg. Emma gave her children the loving care and wisdom they needed to succeed in life, always encouraging them to be true to themselves. When Whoopi lost her mother in 2010—and then her older brother, Clyde, five years later—she felt deeply alone; the only people who truly knew her were gone. Emma raised her children not just to survive, but to thrive. In this intimate and heartfelt memoir, Whoopi shares many of the deeply personal stories of their lives together for the first time.

Good Potential...

Potential was there for a really good story but a few of the characters were so naive or just one dimensional it was hard to feel anything but frustration with them.

Historia
On a dark, wintry day, Eliza Grey receives a mysterious letter from her ailing Nana Mora begging her to come for a visit. This is an easy "Yes". Eliza has always preferred Nana Mora's beach cottage on St. Simons Island to the apartment she and her mom call home in the city. The island is a magical place where stories and legends grow as thick as the Spanish moss dangling in the trees. Now, Nana Mora's eyesight is fading, and there's something she wants to show Eliza before it’s totally gone: a mythical place locals refer to as Sirens Harbor.

A Modern Fairy-tale
Revisado: 05-18-24
Sweet coming of age story. A story of love and of Sirens. This is not an action packed fantasy with sword play and monsters or an evil vs. good story. It is a story of the relationships of an 11 yr old girl, her single mother and beloved grandmother set against the backdrop of life on, and the legends of, the islands in the outer banks of Georgia.

Thoroughly Splendid!
Revisado: 05-10-24
A long time favorite...I have read & listened to this novel many, many times. The author, Elizabeth Peter's (Barbara Michael's, an Egyptologist/archeologist in her own right) writes a story filled with adventure and humor set in the late 19th century with the backdrop of early archeological research in Egypt. It takes little effort to see themes of the damage & cruelties of colonialism, the effects of class structure, and the restrictions of the time on women, etc. Is the story fantastic...absolutely! But it is also just fun!
