Historia
In Americans at Risk, Dr. Irwin Redlener draws on his broad experience as a pediatrician working with mobile emergency units both for children and adults, his time making recommendations to legislators about the vulnerabilities of children to biological and chemical agents and his regular meetings with Tom Ridge of the office of Homeland Security over a period of four years to write this urging a plan for a coordinated plan between government and the private sector.

Good book, still relevant today
Revisado: 12-02-24
Most of the book is fantastic. The author has an ability to depict intricate, but credible scenarios, and also convey a sense of possibility about overcoming the issue of preparedness for large scale disasters. My one knock is it does go a little long on the political appointee issues of the Bush (jr) administration and how they resulted is a stunted ability to respond to crises.

Historia
In a locked Honolulu office building, three men are found dead with no sign of struggle except for the ultrafine, razor-sharp cuts covering their bodies. The only clue left behind is a tiny bladed robot, nearly invisible to the human eye. In the lush forests of Oahu, groundbreaking technology has ushered in a revolutionary era of biological prospecting. Trillions of microorganisms, tens of thousands of bacteria species, are being discovered; they are feeding a search for priceless drugs and applications on a scale beyond anything previously imagined.

Didn’t make it through the second chapter
Revisado: 04-21-24
The writing is poor and it doesn’t respect the reader. The way the initial character introductions are done is eye-roll inducing.

Historia
Founded by the mysterious genius known as the Designer, the archipelago of Prospera lies hidden from the horrors of a deteriorating outside world. In this island paradise, Prospera’s lucky citizens enjoy long, fulfilling lives until the monitors embedded in their forearms, meant to measure their physical health and psychological well-being, fall below 10 percent. Then they retire themselves, embarking on a ferry ride to the island known as the Nursery, where their failing bodies are renewed, their memories are wiped clean, and they are readied to restart life afresh.

Just not worth it
Revisado: 06-20-23
It starts off with an interesting premise and world building, but after that the story is all over the place. At times the characters sound like they’re in a soap opera. I also don’t love Scott Brick as a narrator for this as it adds to the sense that the emotion in the book is being forced, unnaturally.
