Historia
Told in a series of voices, Calling for a Blanket Dance takes us into the life of Ever Geimausaddle through the multigenerational perspectives of his family as they face myriad obstacles. His father’s injury at the hands of corrupt police, his mother's struggle to hold on to her job and care for her husband, the constant resettlement of the family, and the legacy of centuries of injustice all intensify Ever’s bottled-up rage. Meanwhile, all of Ever’s relatives have ideas about who he is and who he should be.

I really liked this book. I enjoyed how different family members’ perspectives were used and different timelines, yet they all tied together. Usually I have a hard time with a lot of character shifts but this one was fine. I appreciated the cultural pieces, especially the differences in tribes and what it is like to be Native mixed with other races/ethnicities. Well done. No negative feedback.

Historia
Delilah Green swore she would never go back to Bright Falls—nothing is there for her but memories of a lonely childhood where she was little more than a burden to her cold and distant stepfamily. Her life is in New York, with her photography career finally gaining steam and her bed never empty. Sure, it’s a different woman every night, but that’s just fine with her.

Ups and downs
Revisado: 09-02-23
Pros:
-Characters with some depth and satisfying development
-Sweet lesbian romance with some steamy parts (but not enough)
-Endearing family relationship building and portrayal of coparenting
-Primarily set in Oregon (my home state)
-Mostly realistic dialogue
-Nice tidbits of art and fashion and whatnot
-Some satisfying portrayals of queer culture
Cons:
-Predictable story arc and conflict (including where it comes out there was a “bet” involved and that hurts someone)
-Primarily privileged perspectives
-Some areas with limited imagination (both women referring to each other or their bodies as perfect, doing things that are the cutest ever, etc)

Historia
With his mother in jail, Sequoyah, a 15-year-old Cherokee boy, is placed in foster care with the Troutt family. Literally and figuratively scarred by his unstable upbringing, Sequoyah has spent years mostly keeping to himself, living with his emotions pressed deep below the surface - that is, until he meets the 17-year-old Rosemary, another youth staying with the Troutts. Sequoyah and Rosemary bond over their shared Native American backgrounds and paths through the foster care system, but as Sequoyah's feelings toward Rosemary deepen, the precariousness of their lives and the scars of their pasts threaten to undo them both.

I will always support Indigenous authors. This had some great parts and there was potential but it was not my favorite and not one I would read/listen to again.

Historia
Seduced by her employer’s son, Evangeline, a naïve young governess in early 19th-century London, is discharged when her pregnancy is discovered and sent to the notorious Newgate Prison. After months in the fetid, overcrowded jail, she learns she is sentenced to "the land beyond the seas", Van Diemen’s Land, a penal colony in Australia. Though uncertain of what awaits, Evangeline knows one thing: The child she carries will be born on the months-long voyage to this distant land.

I wanted to like it
Revisado: 12-21-22
I love Christina Baker Kline and when I read the blurb for this book, I was excited. But it was not great. The main story was sad, as other reviews mention. Gives a nice history lesson. I liked the Indigenous character (and the points made about colonization and its impact) and was extremely annoyed that she had such an insignificant role in the story. She should have her own book, I guess, because her role and related chapters were unnecessary in the main plotline. I wasn’t super interested in the main character’s story, although I felt some of the themes were important (true to the author’s style), such as female victims being blamed, a criminal record ruining someone’s life, etc. That is why I gave it three stars overall. A lot of the parts dragged and I kept waiting for it to pick up. I started the book on a road trip and kept turning it off because it would get boring and make me sleepy. Took me a long time to get through.

Historia
Fifteen-year-old Jeff wakes up on New Year's Day to find himself in the hospital. Make that the psychiatric ward. With the nut jobs. Clearly, this is all a huge mistake. Forget about the bandages on his wrists and the notes on his chart. Forget about his problems with his best friend, Allie, and her boyfriend, Burke. Jeff's perfectly fine, perfectly normal, not like the other kids in the hospital with him. Now they've got problems.

Meh
Revisado: 12-21-22
Everything about this book was really cliche except for the main character’s reason for attempting suicide in the first place. Literally the entire time, the characters said and did completely predictable things. Also, as someone who did inpatient treatment as an adolescent and became a therapist as an adult, there were a lot of inaccuracies that were kinda absurd (like when it comes to privacy, rooms being accessible, etc). The last hour of the Audible story was when things actually got good. Prior to that, I would have given the story zero stars, maybe one for the topic being something that is important to talk about, but being done poorly. But because that last section was good, I give it two stars overall. The narration was not great either. His voices were weird and his inflection was off.

Historia
Zach is 18. He is bright and articulate. He's also an alcoholic and in rehab instead of high school, but he doesn't remember how he got there. He's not sure he wants to remember. Something bad must have happened. Something really, really bad. Remembering sucks and being alive—well, what's up with that?

Almost perfect
Revisado: 12-17-22
When a friend recommended this book, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The beginning was a slow start, but then it picked up and things got good. As a therapist who specializes in addiction treatment and has worked in several residential programs, this book resonated with me and warmed my heart. It captured how complicated feelings, memories, trauma, and opening up can be. It demonstrated what can happen when someone “does the work.” It also provided a cautious reminder that the risk of relapse never totally disappears. This book was almost perfect. The slow start and some of the redundant language (which is part of the character’s voice but still a bit grating) are the only critiques I have.
