Meet Selena Goode. She's an herbalist, she runs a small museum in Salem, and she's a practicing solitary Wiccan. She likes her life, quiet as it is. Then Brian Gottschalk comes barreling into it with the force of an Atlantic storm. He works for a ghost-hunting TV show, and he's in Salem to find a story. He's witty, charming...and a total jerk. Selena has no problem with ghosts. She does, however, have a problem with big-city Brian. It will take all his charm, plus the silent advice of a caring ghost, to make Selena realize that maybe, being big-city isn't so bad after all.

Great performance by Heather Costa
Revisado: 06-29-18
This is a wildly entertaining book that is enhanced by Heather Costa's performance. Take a Wiccan museum owner and pair her with a sexy TV ghost-hunter and you have the makings of an excellent paranormal romance story. Throw in some chatty ghosts and the Salem witch trials, and enjoy the ride. Funny, sexy and thrilling!
Heather Costa is new to the game, but she brings a flirty, mysterious, young sound that I look forward to hearing more of. I can hear her doing more of this type of story, as well as YA, romance, and mystery. She's definitely on my must-buy list.

Historia
In this deeply scary and intensely unnerving debut novel, Jake and a woman known only as "The Girlfriend" are on a drive to visit his parents at their secluded farm. But when Jake leaves "The Girlfriend" stranded at an abandoned high school, what follows is a twisted unraveling of the darkest unease, an exploration into psychological frailty, and an ending as suspenseful as The Usual Suspects and as haunting as Misery.

Amateur psycho-babble trying to be a thriller
Revisado: 09-16-17
Gawd, this book was so self-important. The author goes on for HOURS babbling about good vs bad, absolutes, choices, fate and other things that he's obviously interested in. And that's the book's downfall. The story progresses at a glacier's pace. Instead of giving the reader what they want in a thriller, the author spouts what HE wants us to hear. I suppose there's merit in that, as long as the story is entertaining. But it's not.
Camus this is not. It's a 5 hour book and the first 3 hours of banal discussion of the two people in a car gets old so quickly.
Then the thriller aspects kick in, but even THAT is interrupted by self-important psychological yapping. I literally gasped in annoyance several times.
And the ending. Total head-scratcher. Maybe I'm just not smart enough to "get" it.

I really wanted to like it, but couldn't there.
Revisado: 03-07-17
This book did not need to be 13 hours long. 10 max for the amount of actual story there is.
I realize this is a unique take on the zombie story and, even moreso, a coming-of-age story, but the last half absolutely drags. I enjoyed the setup and found the premise interesting, but the back half really could use some tightening up.
Bonus points for having strong female characters who don't just talk about men all the time. These were fleshed out humans. Military, scientist, civilian.
Finty does a fine job narrating. Clearly delineates between characters and does her best to keep some of the longer descriptive passages interesting.
Not a terrible listen, certainly an intriguing idea. The execution was just a tad disappointing given how much hype the book has had.

Cross between Dave Barry and Garrison Keillor
Revisado: 09-22-16
This is an enjoyable, whimsical collection of anecdotes, and experiences. Imagine a little bit of the absurd family stories of Dave Barry and the down home charm of Garrison Keillor and you've pretty much got Bill Stokes, who wrote these as short columns called "Stoke's Pokes."
And short they are, which is the tome's only negative. Some of these are really short, so they don't delve much deeper than the surface humor. I was hoping for some more depth or life lessons learned, but alas, sometimes things in life are just funny because. And that's OK. Clearly Stokes is not trying to draw any deep meaning on most of these. But just sharing a good chuckle.
I'm OK with that.

Stunning production value. I mean STUNNING
Revisado: 09-20-16
This is one of those audiobooks you hold up and show off to non-audiobook friends as the way it should be done.
While the story is over wrought and definitely over-long, the production value is mesmerizing. Absolutely flawless delivery. World-class special effects, intriguing recording style (They apparently did on-location recording with the actors), great music. Overall, an absolutely perfect display of audio goodness. Sublime.

So much fun!
Revisado: 09-20-16
Listened to this in a road-trip with my teenagers. At first I got the usual "Oh Dad, we don't want to listen to one of your dumb audiobooks", but this one... This one grabbed them from the beginning. Dude finds a computer program that.... well, spoilers.
Then we flash back to medieval England and yes, it makes sense. and the riotous adventure begins. So funny, so well told.
And Luke Daniels gives the performance to beat. Wonderful accents, unique characters. He so obviously enjoys doing this book, that we can't help but have enormous amounts of fun with him.
Must listen and must get the sequel!

Revisado: 09-20-16
This is one of those Could Not Put Down books. I wandered the house looking for things to do while listening so I could finish this. My garden never looked so weed-free.
Scott Brick brings another amazing performance of a finely crafted thriller about a man with no name. Thrilling set-up, fantastic premise. Thriller fans should look no further.

Masterful narration
Revisado: 09-20-16
Given who the narrator is, I would expect nothing more than masterful narration, and Scott delivers. Could not have asked for better. The cameos by the other narrators add a nice flair and change of pace. Both are excellent as well.
But the story is a slog. Starts off well, shifts time, and then draaaaags. Just as I was getting to know the characters in the first part, I'm expected to shift gears and start caring about this whole NEW set of characters and I just couldn't do it.
Fine performance of self-indulgent writing.

Revisado: 09-20-16
The story is fun, kinda screwball. Kinda Carl Hiassen. Joel Froomkin does a masterful job at the narration. Accents, over-the-top characters. He really brings this story to life and I look forward to listening to more from him.
