Born into the troubled kingdom of Albermaine, Alwyn Scribe is raised as an outlaw. Quick of wit and deft with a blade, Alwyn is content with the freedom of the woods and the comradeship of his fellow thieves. But an act of betrayal sets him on a new path - one of blood and vengeance, which eventually leads him to a soldier's life in the king's army. Fighting under the command of Lady Evadine Courlain, a noblewoman beset by visions of a demonic apocalypse, Alwyn must survive war and the deadly intrigues of the nobility if he hopes to claim his vengeance.

The beginning of a great series
Revisado: 11-15-21
I do find A Ryan’s writing to be a bit overwrought at times, but he handles it well with this character. Will definitely look into the martyr when it is released.

Historia
This lush novel, set in 1766 England and America, evokes an era ripe with riot and revolution, from the teeming streets of London to the sprawling grounds of a Virginia plantation. Mack McAsh burns with the desire to escape his life of slavery in Scottish coal mines while Lizzie Hallim is desperate to shed a life of sheltered subjugation to her spineless husband. United in America, their only chance for freedom lies beyond the Western frontier - if they're brave enough to take it.

Kind of drove me nuts that the lead character is a commoner from Scotland who spoke in an English accent.

I find myself reflecting on and comparing my enjoyment of this to Way of The King and Name of the Wind. By far best book of the year.

Just a quick comment to say unlike some of the reviewers I liked the narration. Or at least I didn’t hate it. Story was well paced. Good character development. Interesting and relatable world. Well worth the credit

Brandon Does it Again!!!
Revisado: 12-03-18
This book launches a new series for Brandon. Another great line of teen fiction that, with my teens well in my past, I still found highly enjoyable. Gripping storytelling, great characters and enough intrigue to keep you coming back for more. Can’t wait for the next in this series - well after the next instalment of Lightbringer.
Get it. You’ll love it.

Did not live up to the hype
Revisado: 03-18-18
It’s ok. For a sophomore effort I commend the author. Still it seemed formulaic to me and the cliches of the genre were to evident (orphaned male grows up to save the world). Over all I struggled to finish but persisted given the good character development.

Bottom of the library
Revisado: 06-06-16
Of all the audio books I have in my library, this is by far the worst. The best of this book is the plot. The ending is cohesive and pleasing. Character development was also fair. I found the main character annoying living up to his nickname "Noble". The writing was sub par. Not bad necessarily but just not up to the quality of the typical fantasy writer these days. That being said its still not overly compelling
The absolute worst was the way the books was narrated. I'm not familiar with the reader so it might be he was poorly directed. Whatever the reason, the accent used had a slight southern stats twang to it. The ability to use and present the accent consistently was poor. Further the beat and rhythm left me reminiscing of Keno Reves. And not in a good way. The valley guy presentation was wholly tiresome, distracting and significantly detracted from the story. And don't get me started on how he did female voices as well as female hungering - nails on a chalk board would be only slightly more annoying.
Don't waist your credit. I wish I hadn't waisted mine.
