Historia
Both a history and an examination of human thought and behavior spanning three thousand years, On Politics thrillingly traces the origins of political philosophy from the ancient Greeks to Machiavelli in Book I and from Hobbes to the present age in Book II. Whether examining Lord Acton's dictum that "absolute power corrupts absolutely" or explicating John Stuart Mill's contention that it is "better to be a human dissatisfied than a pig satisfied," Alan Ryan evokes the lives and minds of our greatest thinkers in a way that makes hearing about them a transcendent experience.

Historia
The Enlightenment That Failed explores the growing rift between those Enlightenment trends and initiatives that appealed exclusively to elites and those aspiring to enlighten all of society by raising mankind's awareness, freedoms, and educational level generally. Jonathan I. Israel explains why the democratic and radical secularizing tendency of the Western Enlightenment, after gaining some notable successes during the revolutionary era (1775-1820) in numerous countries, especially in Europe, North America, and Spanish America, ultimately failed.

Magnificent performance of an overwhelming argument
Revisado: 02-10-24
James Cameron Stewart is simply magnificent, tackling a wide range of languages, difficult names, and complex sentences with grace. Israel lays out not only his thesis, but why his critics are wrong.
In short, the enlightenment split into radical and moderate factions. The radical wing failed, but has reformed as postmodernism. A valuable correction to arguments like those in Cynical Theories and similar works.
The links are clear - you can see “modern” complaints about inequality in quotes from the 1600s.
Missing is any link to the impact the discovery of the Americas and native political organizations on European thought. This is unfortunate, as idealized versions likely influenced the arguments in Europe.

Blackshirts and Reds explores some of the big issues of our time: fascism, capitalism, communism, revolution, democracy, and ecology. These terms are often bandied about but seldom explored in the original and exciting way that has become Michael Parenti's trademark. Parenti shows how "rational fascism" renders service to capitalism, how corporate power undermines democracy, and how revolutions are a mass empowerment against the forces of exploitative privilege.

I’m sympathetic to his outrage, and his facts re: exploitation are correct, but…
Revisado: 11-02-23
…if you’re going to solve the problem, you need to understand it. Marxism has fallen out of favor because it fails to correctly explain the situation. Fundamentally, the “global capitalist elite” do not exist as a class. The term describes that which forms as human beings make decisions to further their own interests relative to others. Thus it is an emergent property, not a conspiracy. Treating it as a conspiracy leads to the sorts of idiotic conclusions presented here. Parenti and other Marxists desperately want a “them” for “us” to attack. But as he shows, even in the hands of “Marxists,” events drive decisions that lead to the same perverse results pursued by the “global capitalist elite”.
Narrator was fantastic. But there’s no saving the content.
Purchased this one thinking it dealt with fascism…that’s maybe the first 10%, and his strongest, though still weak case. The rest is just apology for Marxism.

American diplomacy is under siege. Offices across the State Department sit empty while abroad, the military-industrial complex has assumed the work once undertaken by peacemakers. We're becoming a nation that shoots first and asks questions later. In an astonishing account ranging from Washington, DC, to Afghanistan, Pakistan, and North Korea in the years since 9/11, acclaimed journalist and former diplomat Ronan Farrow illuminates one of the most consequential and poorly understood changes in American history.

Historia
There is an ancient Chinese proverb that states, "Two tigers cannot share the same mountain." However, in East Asia, there are three tigers on that mountain: China, Japan, and Korea, and they have a long history of turmoil and tension with each other. In his latest entertaining and thought-provoking narrative travelogue, Michael Booth sets out to discover how deep, really, the enmity is between these three "tiger" nations and what prevents them from making peace.

Crucifixion, the Romans believed, was the worst fate imaginable, a punishment reserved for slaves. How astonishing it was, then, that people should have come to believe that one particular victim of crucifixion - an obscure provincial by the name of Jesus - was to be worshipped as a god. Dominion explores the implications of this shocking conviction as they have reverberated throughout history.

To be sure, neoliberalism has contributed to a number of alarming trends, not least of which has been a massive growth in income inequality. Yet as the eminent historian Gary Gerstle argues in The Rise and Fall of the Neoliberal Order, these indictments fail to reckon with the full contours of what neoliberalism was and why its worldview had such persuasive hold on both the right and the left for three decades.

If you lived through this…
Revisado: 02-01-23
…then there’s nothing new here. But the real reasons for the low score are the author’s bias and failure to comprehend the failure of neoliberalism to deliver on the promise of liberalism. He labels right-wing conservatives as “neo-liberal” when they are anything but “liberal.” Neoliberalism failed to deliver because liberalism is another idealism- a beautiful utopia that cannot be achieved. Also fails to note the security considerations behind the rise of n-l, which it also failed to cure, because it cannot. See von Moses “Liberalism” and anything by Zeihan for details.

A good book may have the power to change the way we see the world, but a great book actually becomes part of our daily consciousness, pervading our thinking to the point that we take it for granted, and we forget how provocative and challenging its ideas once were - and still are. The Structure of Scientific Revolutions is that kind of book.

A classic, but…
Revisado: 10-18-22
…simply argues that “scientists” are human, with all the foibles thereof. Also misleading- “revolutions” implies rapid change, when the argument clearly indicates that change happens gradually, tentatively, and is accepted slowly. Appeals to science skeptics who want to challenge authority of science. Too bad for them that the author recognizes that science changes because the new ideas work better than the old.

Historia
Scipio Africanus (236-183 BC) was one of the most exciting and dynamic leaders in history. As commander, he never lost a battle. Yet it is his adversary, Hannibal, who has lived on in public memory. As B. H. Liddell Hart writes, "Scipio's battles are richer in stratagems and ruses - many still feasible today - than those of any other commander in history." Any military enthusiast or historian will find this to be an absorbing, gripping portrait.

Essential reading on civil/military relations
Revisado: 10-18-22
Critically important study and argument of one of history’s most innovative and judicious generals. Only thing marring there book is it’s overly argumentative style - Liddell Hart loves Scorpio & wants you to know why his detractors are wrong. So it reads more like a lawyer’s argument than a careful study. Sorry, but you will also need to read more to get a balanced picture.
