Historia
In The Tempest, long considered one of Shakespeare’s most lyrical plays, Prospero, a sorcerer, and his daughter, Miranda, have been stranded on an enchanted island for 12 years. When a shipwreck—caused by the eponymous tempest—brings enemies to the island, the stage is set for comedy, romance, and reconciliation.

Historia
The Berlin Wall is perhaps modern history’s most infamous edifice. The Berlin Wall: A World Divided is more than just the story of brick, concrete, and barbed wire. It’s the story of a city, a country, and a world - all of them divided. To hear how the Berlin Wall exemplified this division is to gain insights into a central tension of world history: between the human drive for freedom and the political will that would control and repress that drive.

Wonderful introduction to a powerful symbol
Revisado: 03-02-23
Wonderful introduction to the rise, fall, and ongoing significance of the Berlin Wall. The author does a fantastic job of weaving micro and macro historical narratives together- focusing on stories of specific people and weaving them into the broader historical developments.

An interesting exercise in self aggrandizement
Revisado: 02-18-23
It’s a good story. As for the biographical elements, who am I to argue? Additionally, I have no doubt that his reminiscences about conversations around the world do justice to the perceptions of the people with whom he spoke. I’ve had several virtually identical conversations myself. Nevertheless, his selective reading of global developments- at times widening and then narrowing his view without justification does violence to time-tested historiographic methodologies and creates a document rife with exaggerations. Meanwhile, he has a penchant for passing off his subjective interpretations of history as historical fact. The book reminds one of an evangelical revival service in which the confessor takes pleasure in providing exaggerated accounts of his past misdeeds, all the while overestimating his own importance in the face of larger events.

Historia
The life of Emperor Charles V (1500-1558), ruler of Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, and much of Italy and Central and South America, has long intrigued biographers. But the elusive nature of the man (despite an abundance of documentation), his relentless travel and the control of his own image, together with the complexity of governing the world's first transatlantic empire, complicate the task.

Great overall
Revisado: 02-12-23
Excellent popular biography that shows notable familiarity with primary sources and adequately contextualizes the life and legacy of Charles V. I would have appreciated more engagement with the key figures and ideas of the reformation in Germany and the inquisition in Spain. Perhaps also with the theological questions and challenges behind the debates over the treatment of the indigenous population of Spanish America. Engagement with church politics in Italy was also reductionistic at some points. Otherwise, very solid work.

Although Washington is often overlooked in most accounts of the period, this masterful new history from Pulitzer Prize winner Edward J. Larson brilliantly uncovers Washington's vital role in shaping the Convention - and shows how it was only with Washington’s support and his willingness to serve as President that the states were brought together and ratified the Constitution, thereby saving the country.

How did America become “one nation, indivisible”? What unified a growing number of disparate states into the modern country we recognize today? To answer these questions, Winchester follows in the footsteps of America’s most essential explorers, thinkers, and innovators. Introducing the fascinating people who played a pivotal role in creating today’s United States, he ponders whether the historic work of uniting the States has succeeded, and to what degree.

I clicked on this audio book without having read any of the author’s other works. Despite its rather verbose tittle and sub title, I wasn’t exactly sure what the book was about in the beginning. The first few chapters were a bit tiresome, but I soon came to realize that they were establishing a much needed framework for the reader. I was hooked by chapter three and things just got more interesting and relevant from there.
