Historia
Behind the tall, foreboding gates of a commune in Brazil, Daniella Mestyanek Young was raised in the religious cult The Children of God, also known as The Family, as the daughter of high-ranking members. Her great-grandmother donated land for one of The Family’s first communes in Texas. Her mother, at thirteen, was forced to marry the leader and served as his secretary for many years. Beholden to The Family’s strict rules, Daniella suffers physical, emotional, and sexual abuse—masked as godly discipline and divine love—and is forbidden from getting a traditional education.

A necessary read for understanding cults!
Revisado: 09-01-24
I saw Daniella on the YouTube channel Cults to Consciousness and on TikTok. I’m so glad I got the audiobook to fully understand her story. The bravery of this woman is unmatched! Bravo for all your service in the many different ways you gave it, and for championing women around the globe!

Historia
Discovering George Michael's Faith confirmed for David Crabb what every bully already knew: He was gay. What saved him from high school was finding a group of outlandish friends who reveled in being outsiders. David found himself enmeshed with misfits: wearing black, cutting class, staying out all night, drinking, tripping, chain-smoking, idolizing the Pet Shop Boys - and learning lessons about life and love along the way.

Amazingly relatable book for all misfits!
Revisado: 03-19-21
David Crabb’s story of adolescence and young adulthood growing up in Texas is one of the most entertaining audiobooks I’ve ever listened to! Not only does he take us on a deep dive through the goth scene of the late 80s and early 90s, but he does so in a way that makes you love your own inner punk! It’s easy to forget that all the characters in this book are voiced solely by the author, as he embodies each friend and family member, masterfully painting vivid pictures for the listener. I especially love his renditions of the songs that defined that time in his life. Bravo!!

Kevin Allison’s Voice Is A Big Hug!
Revisado: 01-05-19
What a great story! I love how Kevin made me see through the eyes of a little boy with a huge imagination. Finding a friend at such a young age with an equally vivid imagination definitely helped shape the author’s life. Little Kevin tells us, ”If you can keep them laughing, you can keep them from hating you.” Wiser words were never said! Thank you for sharing that realization, Kevin Allison, and long love the Two Henrys!

Great Story and Storyteller!
Revisado: 01-05-19
This story of betrayal by Rachel Rosenthal is heart wrenching and eye-opening! I loved the way the author described losing her boisterous voice and finding it again. I enjoyed the description of her bat mitzvah, as I have never been to one. The ordeal she endured is unimaginable to me, but I relate to her disbelief and self-doubt, the time spent wondering how she “let” this happen (even though it was actually done to her), the and the heartbreak of putting all the pieces of the puzzle together, and realizing she could not bargain her way out of reality. I recommend this book!!

Historia
What would happen if your baby’s birth father stood for everything you despised and feared? In this profound and heartrending story, an adoptive mother is forced to discover the answer. After years of infertility, Mani and her husband, David, decided to adopt. When they matched with a teen mother, they were overjoyed, until the likely birth father contested. Frank was a violent white supremacist who had no intention of relinquishing parental rights. With tenuous hope and consuming dread, Mani now had to go head-to-head with a hateful stranger.

This excellent story reminded me that love and beautiful moments can show up at any time, from people or circumstances you never thought would yield positivity, and those moments can ultimately change your life.

Historia
An irresponsible twentysomething comic and his equally shameless grandmother join forces as proud pariahs in this dark and rowdy story of dicey family ties, kindred spirits, bad behavior, and bribery. When Rory’s judgmental mother told him that he took after his grandma Evelyn, he took it as a compliment. The ninety-two-year-old cocktail-toting, offtrack-betting party girl was every bit the troublemaker he was. When she landed at a dead-end nursing home, Rory jumped at the chance to liven things up for bored Evelyn - with vodka, scratch-offs, bingo, and gaming.

Bad Boys Bad Boys Watcha Gonna Do?
Revisado: 01-01-19
This guy had me at, “As we drove off to the (police) station, I belted out the theme song to the TV show ‘Cops’.” Rory Scholl’s well-crafted narrative chronicles his journey as a young man forced to face the parallels between his life choices and those of a beloved family member after the soul-damaging parental admonishment “you’re just like your grandmother” sinks in. Does Rory summon the courage to embrace the black sheep traits? Listen and and find out! I don’t think I’ve heard Mr. Scholl on the RISK! podcast. Where can I hear more from him??

Amazing In Book or Audio Format!!
Revisado: 12-29-18
Tragedy! Comedy! Drama! True Love! This book includes every type of true tale imaginable! Every story and storyteller is vastly different from the next, yet the book flows so smoothly it's impossible to put down. I enjoyed reading it so much I also bought the Audible version, and WOW! I'm so glad I didn't miss out on hearing each and every story beautifully narrated! I noticed another review advised against the audio format of RISK!, and I couldn't disagree more. Kevin Allison, Sarah Mollo-Christensen, and Robin Miles brilliantly used their voices to weave subtle nuances into the stories, which brought out elements of each storyteller's recollection I had not noticed as I read the book. It was surreal to hear Kevin Allison's deep, endearing, expressive, magical voice bring to life a true story written by the one-and-only Dan Savage! This is my new favorite book!
