Historia
"Who is this man, this Scarlet Pimpernel?" Each day this question grew more pressing to the leaders of the French Revolution. Only this man and his band of followers threatened their total power. Only this maddeningly elusive figure defied the vast network of fanatics, informers, and secret agents that the Revolution spread out to catch its enemies.

Fun Story Rife with History
Revisado: 07-11-24
This is a book that so many of us have seen on shelves all of our lives, but have never taken the time to read. It is a very fun story with lots of action, emotion, and historical scenes from the time of the French Revolution/The Terror.

Historia
In the wilds of Mongolia, a research satellite has crashed, triggering an explosive search for its valuable cargo: a code-black physics project connected to the study of dark energy...and a shocking image of the eastern seaboard of the United States in utter ruin. At the Vatican, a package arrives containing two strange artifacts: a skull scrawled with ancient Aramaic and a tome bound in human skin. DNA evidence reveals that both came from the same body: the long-dead Mongol king Genghis Khan.

Sadly poor Reader
Revisado: 05-03-24
Although the story was the typical rollicking, James Rollins story that well intertwined science, science fiction, biblical history, and world geopolitics, unfortunately the reader was one of the worst I have ever heard in my over 200 titles I own. He makes an effort, but his accents are completely on the wrong characters at the wrong times throughout the entirety of the novel. It was very distracting and unfortunately, I cannot write the book highly on that account. I feel the book should be released with a different reader and Start over. Please, Mr. Rolland- stand your ground.

Historia
In 2008, nine mountaineers failed to return from a winter backpacking trip in the New Mexico mountains. At their final campsite, searchers found a bizarre scene: something had appeared at the door of their tent so terrifying that it impelled them to slash their way out and flee barefoot to certain death in a blizzard. Despite a diligent search, only six bodies were found, two violently crushed and inexplicably missing their eyes. The case, given the code name “Dead Mountain” by the FBI, was never solved. Now, two more bodies from the lost expedition are unexpectedly discovered in a cave.

Lazy writing.
Revisado: 02-27-24
I have been a fan of Preston and child for many years and I am a devotee of the Pendergast series, this specific book is an example of lazy writing. Not only was the denouement contrived in my opinion at the end of the main storyline, but also the Courtroom ending was “ lazy” in its ending. Gentlemen, you have vast talents. Please use them!

Here's to the Bobs!
Revisado: 05-12-17
Where does We Are Legion (We Are Bob) rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It is in the top 5 of all audiobooks I have listened--and I have been a member and avid reader for many years!
What was one of the most memorable moments of We Are Legion (We Are Bob)?
When Bob has the AHA moments such as the ability to replicate himself and the discovery of new systems and worlds. The physics are attainable and the sci-fi is hard enough to be believable.
Which character – as performed by Ray Porter – was your favorite?
Bob! And Homer was a favorite as well with his "aw-shucks" attitude and underlying inventiveness.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Absolutely!
Any additional comments?
Both Bob Books 1 and 2 were thoughtful, excellent, and Ray Porter is among my top 2 (along with Scott Brick) readers of all time!

Great concepts...Poor execution
Revisado: 01-29-17
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Anyone who doesnt care how their prose is written and how connected the story line is, etc.
What could Jeremy Robinson have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
He could have had a ton more editing and spend time questioning himself on whether passages were necessary or sensical. It was just poor writing and I am a voracious 53 year old reader who has been through a lot of text and audible books!
What about Jeffrey Kafer’s performance did you like?
I liked the timbre of his voice and cadence. He is a good, not great, reader.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment! It could have been so so much more. Great concepts but just stinking poor writing.
Any additional comments?
I wish Mr. Robinson the best and hope his other concepts have help in their execution.

Love me some Pendergast...
Revisado: 06-29-09
I do love the characters and the general story telling and locales that are employed by Mr. Preston and Mr. Child, but after several books there are several phrases that are beginning to be repetitive and wear on my psyche. These phrases, like "...the work of _ minutes...", "...on well-oiled hinges..", and others, are showing the series to be a bit quickly written. That being said--Please don't stop, gentlemen! I look forward to the cast and characters of this duo, and Cemetary Dance was no exception.

Historia
The Torus is the most expensive machine ever created by humankind, run by the world's most powerful supercomputer. It is the brainchild of Nobel Laureate William North Hazelius. Will the Torus divulge the mysteries of the creation of the universe? Or will it, as some predict, suck the earth into a mini black hole? Or is the Torus a Satanic attempt, as a powerful televangelist decries, to challenge God Almighty on the very throne of Heaven? Twelve scientists under the leadership of Hazelius are sent to the remote mountain to turn it on.

Disturbing
Revisado: 02-17-08
As I listened to the author, of whom I am a fan of his storytelling (with Child and his solo novels), I kept geting an odd feeling....then I realized what it was...if any other group, such as Muslims, Catholics, African-Americans, etc. were getting such a treatment as the Christians did in this book, there would be public outcry from all corners.
There is more anthropologic fiction here than science fiction, as I have never met any Christians like the ones Doug Preston describes here. As a biochemist, I am very disappointed with the hate-mongering that the author pens here, since he began training in science before completing his education. I am glad that the Christians I have met are more concerned with helping others than the caricatures that are painted with broad brushes in these pages.
Overall, a very disappointing effort using theology to fan the flames of hatred. So sad...

Amidst this destruction, a father and his young son walk, always toward the coast, but with no real understanding that circumstances will improve once they arrive. Still, they persevere, and their relationship comes to represent goodness in a world of utter devastation.

Bleak but excellent prose
Revisado: 11-12-07
I have listened to many, many audio books and this one is unique. Magnificent prose, and a depiction of an amazing father-son relationship, despite McCarthy's amazingly depressing landscape that is hopeless and soulless. It is truly a unique work that bears a close listen, but don't expect an ending that neatly, happily ties up all loose ends. I disagree that the reader is not all that he could be. His deep, woodsy voice reflects the timbre of the world in which the story is set, and is paired beautifully to "The Road"
