Historia
The first agent disappearance was a puzzle. The second was a mystery. The third was a conspiracy. Intelligence operatives around the world are disappearing. When a missing American agent re-appears in Venezuela, Court Gentry, the Gray Man, is dispatched to bring him in, but a team of assassins has other ideas. Court escapes with his life and a vital piece of intelligence. Meanwhile, CIA agent Zoya Zakharova is in Berlin. Her mission: to infiltrate a private intelligence firm with some alarming connections. The closer she gets to answers, the less likely she is to get out alive.

Dumber than dumb
Revisado: 07-13-21
A poor attempt at a cinematic spy thriller with cardboard characters, ludicrously unbelievable action sequences and dumb dialog. The narrator deserves extra for reading this with a straight face.

Historia
A hard-faced woman clad in a blue mink stole and dripping with diamonds hires Lew Archer to track down her former maid, who she claims has stolen her jewelry. Archer can tell he’s being fed a line, but curiosity gets the better of him and he accepts the case. He tracks the wayward maid to a ramshackle motel in a seedy, run-down small town, but finds her dead in her tiny room, with her throat slit from ear to ear. Archer digs deeper into the case and discovers a web of deceit and intrigue, with crazed number-runners from Detroit, gorgeous triple-crossing molls, and a golden-boy shipping heir who’s gone mysteriously missing.

The usual suspects…
Revisado: 07-07-21
…and a plot that offers few surprises but moves steadily and logically without any WTF moments of incredulity or ridiculousness. Some good Archerisms but there could always be more. Good performance with a narrator that Bogart would envy for his delivery.

Pretty good plot line with minimal complications except for the occasional maguffin and the non sequiturs at the end.

Very good storytelling
Revisado: 06-14-21
This Gunther saga stays close to home, in the best way, with a tight narrative that avoids over-the-top, wide-screen cinematic villainy and implausible plot lines. The narrator does a very good job of differentiating characters and adding appropriate emotional tone.

Depressing
Revisado: 06-11-21
Not a likable character in the whole story. Why should we care about characters that are all despicable in a story universe of total corruption? It’s chapter after chapter of racist, violent morally empty and homophobic characters doing bad things to each other. Yuck! I’m really sorry I wasted my money on this (expletive deleted).

Historia
Phoebe Wycherly was missing two months before her wealthy father hired Archer to find her. That was plenty of time for a young girl who wanted to disappear to do so thoroughly—or for someone to make her disappear. And before he could locate the Wycherly girl, Archer had to reckon with the Wycherly woman, Phoebe’s mother, an eerily unmaternal blonde who kept too many residences, had too many secrets, and left too many corpses in her wake.

Good plot not predictable
Revisado: 06-09-21
The storyline in this one had me guessing until the end. The characterizations were good with nice twists on Macdonald’s giggle worthy one liners. Sometimes the narrator wasn’t able to sustain distinction on multiple voices but was otherwise verbally hard boiled.

90% psychodrama
Revisado: 06-01-21
Not a lot of action or detection. Lots of family drama with good characterization but it got a bit talky. Mostly good but the ending was a bit of a let down.

Lew Archer knew he shouldn't have taken the case, but Alex Kincaid seemed so desperate. Kincaid's loving new bride, Dolly, had just inexplicably walked out on him, leaving Kincaid more than a little fearful for her sanity and her safety. So Archer reluctantly agreed to help Kincaid find his wife.

Good plot line with a nice twist at the end. Numerous, marvelous, toss-off one liners that had me laughing, charmed by MacDonald’s skills with word-smithery. Excellent vocal performance, too.

A great experience
Revisado: 05-07-21
Might be the best crime novel ever written. Sam Spade is the archetypal PI, none better. The voice actor is mostly quite good but doesn’t have the range to cover all the necessary voices.
