Historia
For someone who made a career out of oversharing on the Internet, Tyler Oakley has a shocking number of personal mishaps and shenanigans to reveal in his first book: He experienced a legitimate rage blackout in a Cheesecake Factory; he had a fashion stand-off with the White House Secret Service; he crashed a car in front of his entire high school in an Arby's uniform; he projectile vomited while bartering with a grandmother.

This was a funny listen for the most part, growing up gay isn't always easy. But Tyler reads his book amusingly and inserts little bits that make it feel like he's right beside you.

Historia
Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city - a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent - but he's one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music.

Dual POV voices work well
Revisado: 11-10-16
In the future, America has fractured into territories, named after character traits, and values, such irony. Monsters exist in the real world, in cities and towns, brought forth by violent crime. V-City is the setting of our story, and is divided in two, each side run by a different family. The Harker side keeps its own monsters branded, and people pay for protection. The Flynn side fights monsters and patrols the streets to keep crime in check.
Kate Harker has finally come home after getting kicked out of her fifth boarding school; the daughter of the Boss, she just wants to prove herself to her father and be a family again. August Flynn goes undercover at the same school as Kate, to keep an eye on her and get information. August is not a true son, because he is a Sounai, a monster who feeds on souls of the wicked, but he just wants to be human.
So this sounds like a Romeo and Juliet set up doesn’t it? But there is no romance, and Kate and August are enemies., at least at first. It's a series starter that I like very much. I’m curious to see how this plot plays out. The ending is satisfactory but the epilogue sets up the next book nicely.

One new narrator doesn't spoil it.
Revisado: 11-10-16
Picking up right where Six of Crows left off, (argh--cliff hanger ending!) we are once again thrust into the Grisha world. Rescuing Inej from capture is the focus of the beginning of the book. Getting their promised money, the rest. A long game is being played by Kaz, and as it was being unveiled there were times I had to turn the audiobook off to take a breather.
This audiobook had a change in one narrator from the previous one. Wylan’s voice was strange at first and his version of Kaz’s voice was jarring. enough to remind me I was listening to an audiobook. Even with that flaw, I’d recommend both audios for this series. I almost didn’t want to finish having become enamoured of this world.
I have so many FEELINGS about this book but if I talk about them...spoilers. Suffice it to say--I loved this series, and i didn’t think i would. You don’t need to have read the Grisha series to understand this one.

Better as audio, than print!
Revisado: 08-11-16
I started this book earlier this year and quit about halfway through. I liked it okay, but not enough to finish it unless I had to, well, it made the list, so I had to... I decided to audiobook it, and it was sooooo much better. The readers were great and I actually cared about the characters as I listened. Now I'm ready for the second one!

Historia
Mare Barrow's world is divided by blood - those with red and those with silver. Mare and her family are lowly Reds, destined to serve the Silver elite whose supernatural abilities make them nearly gods. Mare steals what she can to help her family survive, but when her best friend is conscripted into the army she gambles everything to win his freedom. A twist of fate leads her to the royal palace, where, in front of the king and all his nobles, she discovers a power of her own - an ability she didn't know she had.

Another love triangle
Revisado: 12-21-15
Mare Barrow lives in a world of Reds: the lower class, ordinary laborers, soldiers on the front lines. Cal lives in the world of Silvers: the upper class, rulers with power to manipulate the elements, the officers and generals. When Mare unexpectedly displays the same ability to manipulate electricity, she’s taken in by the royal family for a “makeover” and must pass for a Silver, if she wants her family to survive. Rebels want her for their cause, both royal brothers want her, her family needs her; what’s a girl to do?
This fantasy has lots of things going on in it to catch my students’ attention: a love triangle, political intrigue, war between classes, superpowers, betrayals, and it’s a series. The only frustration is waiting on the sequels.

Historia
Magic, adventure, mystery, and romance combine in this epic debut in which a young princess must reclaim her dead mother’s throne, learn to be a ruler - and defeat the Red Queen, a powerful and malevolent sorceress determined to destroy her. On her 19th birthday, Princess Kelsea Raleigh Glynn, raised in exile, sets out on a perilous journey back to the castle of her birth to ascend her rightful throne. Plain and serious, a girl who loves books and learning, Kelsea bears little resemblance to her mother, the vain and frivolous Queen Elyssa.

One person, many voices
Revisado: 06-18-15
The narrator did a good job differentiating between the many characters in this fantasy series starter. There were times the audio did seem to change in volume, but not too many. This is marketed as a YA book, but I think it is better for older teens rather than younger, some of the sexual language (in reference to acts only mentioned rather than part of the plot) may make some a bit uncomfortable. Adult fans of fantasy will enjoy this, too. Romance in not a factor, but world building, changes in society, and adventure take the main stage.

Perfect voice
Revisado: 09-16-14
What did you like best about this story?
I did not expect to get sucked into this book. I hadn’t paid any attention to the cover, or read the blurb. I did know several of my students loved it, and it was on my Gateway read-down. But—once I started, I savored it. Lauren Fortang, the narrator of the audiobook, has the perfect voice for Josie. When Ms. Fortang’s voice changes for the other characters, the differences are there to recognize each individual person. As I got closer to the end, I gave up and read the last chapters, in a physical book(!) because I could read faster than it was being read to me and I needed to know what happened!
Any additional comments?
Josie’s character comes off as very naïve occasionally, even though she was not sheltered at all by her background. Her need to do everything for herself frustrated me, even as I realized I really liked Josie. I wanted her to succeed to be happy, to get out of the Big Easy, and to have her happy ending. One of my friends who also read this thought things wrapped up in too nice a bow at the end—but I liked that, and wasn’t disappointed.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
This was a DNF for me. I just didn't care about the characters enough to finish. I was able to figure out what had happened without needing to hear the full story.

Easier to follow because of the audio
Revisado: 09-03-14
Would you consider the audio edition of The 5th Wave to be better than the print version?
The 5th Wave is huge, 480 pages, 12 hours and 41 minutes on audio. That will make it a tough sell for some readers, but it’s action packed and I have several advocates already in place at school. I didn't realize that some readers had difficulty following who was speaking, because it wasn't an issue with the audio. The narrator changed.
Any additional comments?
The boys at school put this on my TBR pile. As big as it is, I think it will make a good movie--there are a lot of introspective thinking scenes that could be done with voice over and flashbacks, on the way to the action sequences. A bloody plague, bombs, child soldiers, and survival issues will probably carry the film. But in the mean time...read this! Both Cassie and Ben tell fascinating stories of how the world has changed and how they’ve had to change attitudes, behavior and expectations. It’s amazing how priorities crystallize when first world problems are merely luxurious memories, once important but now seen as frivolous and empty.

What did you like best about this story?
The relationship between John and Henri
