Historia
In two previous highly regarded books on the US Senate, Ira Shapiro chronicled the institution from its apogee in the 1970s through its decline in the decades since. Now, Shapiro turns his gaze to how the Senate responded to the challenges posed by the Trump administration and its prospects under President Biden. Shapiro documents the pivotal challenges facing the Senate during the Trump administration, arguing that the body's failure to provide leadership represents the most catastrophic failure of government in American history.

Short, sweet, and to the point
Revisado: 06-28-24
Focus on Mitch was healthy. Not sure others have been paying attention but this one man has done more to destroy this democracy. Mitch McConnell has done a lot of damage that will have long term ramifications. I’m sure he and his fans are happy but am troubled that one man can hurt so many people……. And clearly, he does not care. This book explains the issue in great detail. I am grateful for this book and the information it provides.

Historia
In 1838, a group of America’s most prominent Catholic priests sold 272 enslaved people to save their largest mission project, what is now Georgetown University. In this groundbreaking account, journalist, author, and professor Rachel L. Swarns follows one family through nearly two centuries of indentured servitude and enslavement to uncover the harrowing origin story of the Catholic Church in the United States. Through the saga of the Mahoney family, Swarns illustrates how the Church relied on slave labor and slave sales to sustain its operations and to help finance its expansion.

The scholarship and attention to detail.
Revisado: 04-02-24
This book demonstrates what can be done when people decide to do something about the harm their ancestors caused and perpetuated. Coming face to face with the wrongs done to generations took courage. I am grateful for that. So much more needs to be said and done. America has great wealth, and I am hope it will pay attention and accept its larger role in slavery. This is a very good beginning !

For too long the Religious Right has masqueraded as a social movement preoccupied with a number of cultural issues, such as abortion and same-sex marriage. In her deeply reported investigation, Katherine Stewart reveals a disturbing truth: this is a political movement that seeks to gain power and to impose its vision on all of society. America’s religious nationalists aren’t just fighting a culture war, they are waging a political war on the norms and institutions of American democracy.

Somebody had to say it.
Revisado: 03-18-24
I enjoyed the book and felt vindicated by the author’s basic premise that America’s challenges are so deeply rooted in its culture that it will be next to impossible to eradicate it. White supremacy and white nationalism is not going away quietly. Denial is the first hurdle. The author it clear that our work as a nation to repair its racist past is far from over and in many ways has not even begun.

Should be required reading for every high school student. More can be said but her summary is enough. We are in trouble, and the future is up to us who love the ideals of democracy and want to see it perfected in our lifetime. Highly recommend.

Historia
As Adolf Hitler and the Nazis seduced a nation, bullied a continent, and attempted to exterminate the Jews of Europe, a small number of dissidents and saboteurs worked to dismantle the Third Reich from the inside. One of these was Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor and author. In this New York Times bestselling biography, Eric Metaxas takes both strands of Bonhoeffer's life—the theologian and the spy—and draws them together to tell a searing story of incredible moral courage in the face of monstrous evil.

Revisado: 07-24-23
It was sad to know the outcome of the story before reading it. The sadness continued thru each chapter even onto the end. What a great man. Yes, one can be changed by reading this story. I can personally attest to it. From start to finish, Bonhoeffer challenges me to pray fervently and to read, study, and meditate on God’s word. It is the most important thing for me to do as a Christian and I am thankful for the life of D. Bonhoeffer as told in this book. May his memory always be honored.

Historia
One of the darkest and cruelest chapters in the history of the United States occurred when the nation’s young government decided to remove the native peoples from their lands in the name of profit. Having helped settlers for hundreds of years, five Native American tribes found it increasingly more difficult to relate to, and trust, the country that had once acted as their allies. The native peoples had fought alongside the Americans to gain freedom from England, the nation that the colonists deemed oppressive and unfair.

Dee Brown's eloquent, meticulously documented account of the systematic destruction of the American Indian during the second half of the 19th century uses council records, autobiographies, and firsthand descriptions. Brown allows great chiefs and warriors of the Dakota, Ute, Sioux, Cheyenne, and other tribes to tell us in their own words of the battles, massacres, and broken treaties that finally left them demoralized and defeated.

A sad but important historical account
Revisado: 11-23-22
Been delaying the reading of this book for several years but finally decided, in honor of Native American Heritage month 2022. I regret that I did not read this sooner.
It is a tragic history that is not taught anywhere. I can now see why. America is a horrible place that continues to brag about its accomplishments since the founding of this country…..what a sham. This land was stolen, no doubt about it, but the thievery was done by murdering and exterminating the people who lived here. And to make matters worse, the story of the events leading to the extermination of Native American has been hidden and current attempts to keep those events are no worse than the actual event.
Shame on America. We should be better than that but I’m afraid we are not.

How could this be allowed to happen ?
Revisado: 11-12-22
Happy to hear this narrative. Certainly recall the events outlined here and the context of the events. So much more could have been said but the bottom line is that a very flawed human was allowed to get all the way to the Oval, and it could very well happen again. A must read for historical perspective but sad to hear how this man manipulated everyone and everything around him for so long for his own personal pleasure. He cared about no one…..ever. We owe
Maggie special thanks for her courage to share this unbelievable tale to a nation that is not ready to hear the truth. Much courage is needed.
Definitely time to move forward. Some folks are just too gullible. We can never go back to being manipulated by con men and women.

Ascending to the leadership role of US Attorney for the Southern District, which includes Manhattan and several counties to the north, is a capstone to any legal career: it entails guiding a team of the best lawyers in America in selecting and winning cases that often have global import. Geoffrey Berman was honored to be tapped for the job by Donald Trump in 2018. The manner in which Trump had dispatched his predecessor Preet Bharara was troubling, but the institution was fabled for its independence. Surely he could manage.

They Want to Kill Americans is the first detailed look into the heart of the active Trump-led insurgency, setting the stage for a second nation-wide rebellion on American soil. This is a chilling and deeply researched early warning to the nation from a counterterrorism intelligence professional: America is primed for a possible explosive wave of terrorist attacks and armed confrontations that aim to bring about a Donald Trump led dictatorship.

Sending out the alarm
Revisado: 08-30-22
It’s hard to disagree with the book’s title. There are Americans who want to kill other Americans. It is appalling to think about but Mr. Nance speaks directly to us and sends a strong message that simply cannot be ignored. This undercurrent of venom has been out there for a long time. Malcom calls it out. If something isn’t done NOW, we are doomed. They are crazy and have guns. Lots of guns, and they don’t care. This is a serious warning 😳
