Historia
Harry Sylvester Bird grows up in Edward, Pennsylvania, with his parents, Wayne and Chevy, whom he greatly dislikes. They’re racist, xenophobic, financially incompetent, and they have quite a few secrets of their own. To Harry, they represent everything wrong with this country. And his small town isn’t any better. He witnesses racial profiling, graffitied swastikas, and White Power signs on his walk home from school. He can’t wait until he’s old enough to leave. When he finally is, he moves straight to New York City, where he feels he can finally live out his true inner self.

The foils are created by checking off a list of every prejudice—gender, race, economic, religion . . . resulting in flat characters and general predictability.

Historia
The study of sexual physiology has been a paying career or a diverting sideline for scientists as far-ranging as Leonardo da Vinci and James Watson. The research has taken place behind the closed doors of laboratories, brothels, MRI centers, pig farms, sex-toy R&D labs, and Alfred Kinsey's attic.
Mary Roach, "The funniest science writer in the country", devoted the past two years to stepping behind those doors. In Bonk, Roach shows us how and why sexual arousal and orgasm can be so hard to achieve and what science is doing to slowly make the bedroom a more satisfying place.

Fun, informative, and quirky— my idea of time well spent. The narrator really sold it.

Historia
When author Jeff Hobbs arrived at Yale University, he became fast friends with the man who would be his college roommate for four years, Robert Peace. Robert's life was rough from the beginning in the crime-ridden streets of Newark in the 1980s, with his father in jail and his mother earning less than $15,000 a year. But Robert was a brilliant student, and it was supposed to get easier when he was accepted to Yale, where he studied molecular biochemistry and biophysics.

I feel like I shouldn’t review it because I’m white, but this is a must read study of the likely impossibility of trying to straddle two cultures. I also loved its look at masculine and feminine expectations

Historia
Kevin Breel burst into the public's awareness when at 19 his TED talk became a worldwide phenomenon. Through the lens of his own near suicide, he shared his profoundly vulnerable story of being young, male, and depressed in a culture that has no place for that. Boy Meets Depression is a book that explores what it means to struggle and tells an honest, heartfelt story about how a meaningful life isn't found in perfection; it's found in our ability to heal and accept the dark parts of ourselves.

The only thing the tale has going for it is how stubborn the protagonist is. Otherwise, all the self-depreciation and “now-I-know” refrains quickly steer the reader into not caring much about what happens next.

Though two of the participating comics are not favorites, I thoroughly enjoyed this listen. Like Bill Bryson and Jim Gaffigan, I know this is one I re-listen to over the years. Frank and fun throughout.

You'll be able to see the next plot turn far before it ever comes. And for all its earnest professing to be a story of female empowerment, it is not. The two female protagonists require a great deal of saving and rescuing. They are broken at the beginning of the story, and they are broken still by the end.

Historia
Divorced from his own wife and carrying on halfheartedly with another man's, saddled with a bum knee and friends who make enemies redundant, Sully now has one new problem to cope with: a long-estranged son who is in imminent danger of following in his father's footsteps. With its uproarious humor and a heart that embraces humanity's follies as well as its triumphs, Nobody's Fool, from Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Richard Russo, is storytelling at its most generous. Nobody’s Fool was made into a movie starring Paul Newman, Bruce Willis, Jessica Tandy, and Melody Griffith.

Crass and Outdated
Revisado: 08-23-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
This was my first Richard Russo book. I wanted to read it before reading Everybody's Fool and hearing Russo interviewed. I don't know now if I will. Our anti-hero, Scully, is just too hard to feel sympathetic towards, so I was glad there was a long list of characters to follow. Maybe I'll try a different Russo book and see if, in general, he's got something to say to me.
Has Nobody's Fool turned you off from other books in this genre?
I don't know yet.
What does Ron McLarty bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I appreciated his narrative skills
Was Nobody's Fool worth the listening time?
Can't decide. Almost stopped a few times.

Historia
This transcendent story follows four college friends who move to New York City, buoyed by ambition: Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, an artist; Malcolm, an architect; and, at the center, Jude, a withdrawn, brilliant attorney haunted by an unspeakable past. Through decades of shared and separate lives, Jude’s suffering - and its impact on those who love him - raises questions about the limits of human endurance, the possibility for redemption, and the meaning of friendship.

Maudlin
Revisado: 01-23-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Length and cadence of rise fall, rise fall mini-melodramas to entice the reader
What could Hanya Yanagihara have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
3/4 of the way through, I'd stopped caring for Jude; I was tired of his defiance and unwillingness to talk. By that point, I started to think he deserved his emotional agony.
Though it was initially a point of curiosity that pushed the plot forward, the fact that no character was willing to confront, report and discuss Jude's negative behaviors became unbelievable.
Did Oliver Wyman do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Yes, but I tired of the the way he said, "I'm sorry." Since it was said so many times in this book, it started to come out the same way/tone regardless of the character
Do you think A Little Life needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No. All bases covered
Any additional comments?
I can't see myself reading another book by Ms. Yanagihara.
