This book was kind of strange. It was probably worth the listen since it does tell interesting facts and features about the national parks, but I had the following criticisms:

1. The choice of parks to “spotlight” in each section seemed super arbitrary. Like in the Midwest section he spotlighted Hot Sprints and Gateway Arch at the expense of parks like Badlands, Isle Royale, or Theodore Roosevelt.

2. The descriptions often seemed very repetitive and cut and paste. Gushing about the views from the gateway arch in the same hushed tone of voice as was previously used in Yosemite Valley or Big Bend is kind of ridiculous.

3. The editing was bad. The narrator often mispronounces commonly known locations, then changes the pronunciation halfway through descriptions. Of note, he keeps calling Acadia “Arcadia” until halfway through the section when he randomly just switches back to the proper pronunciation. This happened frequently. Also I’m pretty sure the same description of Indiana Dunes or something like that in the Midwest section played like 3 or 4 times one after the other, but I’m not 100% because it was so repetitive that it could have just been a repeated explanation.

Orthodoxy is one of the greatest books ever written, and John Franklyn-Robbins performs it perfectly. I forget that it’s not GK himself reading it. Definitely get Orthodoxy, and definitely get this version.
