I thoroughly enjoyed every part of the book. The author, a female non commissioned office in the Army reserves, reflects on her years in the service. From basic training to deployments in the Gulf War and later in Bosnia by going back through her journals. I think any service member can relate to much of it.
Her experiences as a female NCO is not something I can relate to, but can appreciate. Dory describes some of the unique challenges women have in our armed services (something very few know very little about).
This isn't a fantasy "war hero" book with exaggerated stories, this is real - the good, the bad, the non-glorious.
If you are considering a full or part-time career in the military, or if you are just simply curious what it's like, read this book.

Historia
College student Joe Talbert has the modest goal of completing a writing assignment for an English class. His task is to interview a stranger and write a brief biography of the person. With deadlines looming, Joe heads to a nearby nursing home to find a willing subject. There he meets Carl Iverson, and soon nothing in Joe's life is ever the same. Carl is a dying Vietnam veteran-and a convicted murderer. With only a few months to live, he has been medically paroled to a nursing home after spending thirty years in prison for the crimes of rape and murder.

Kept me engaged throughout the story. Good character development. Good, but not too many, twists
