Hard to like main character
Revisado: 05-29-24
There wasn’t enough depth to the main character to like her. There was very little excitement to the story.

Not my favorite
Revisado: 01-04-24
I usually like Jessica Redland’s books- but not this one. The main character just isn’t relatable or particularly likable, and I’m someone who also has an auto-immune disease.

It took me a few minutes to get into the style of a series of letters— but ultimately it was a wonderful story with complex and lovable characters.

Historia
Paris Daillencourt is a recipe for disaster. Despite his passion for baking, his cat, and his classics degree, constant self-doubt and second-guessing have left him a curdled, directionless mess. So when his roommate enters him in Bake Expectations, the nation’s favourite baking show, Paris is sure he’ll be the first one sent home. But not only does he win week one’s challenge—he meets fellow contestant Tariq Hassan. Sure, he’s the competition, but he’s also cute and kind, with more confidence than Paris could ever hope to have.

I wanted to like it
Revisado: 01-27-23
I tried so hard to like it. I loved the first book in this series— but omg. By the time it got to the mean tweets, I found myself agreeing. Paris is hard to like— but I’m happy about the confrontation of a mental health issue. We all need to talk about that more.

This was a well written, and well performed book. Going on this journey with the characters really made the reader introspective as well. not my usual, type of book, but very glad I listened.

Amber Nicholls, Lachlan McCarthy, and Raffaele Wright would normally have absolutely nothing in common. But growing up as foster kids in Teddy Penhaligon's seaside home has forged a bond tighter than glue. Each one has messes in life to deal with, but when they get the news that Teddy's met someone while on vacation, they'll do anything to protect him from a presumed gold-digger—even if they have to save him from himself first. But how can they guide their foster father when they can barely get a grip on their own lives?

Great story. Bad accents.
Revisado: 08-23-22
Fantastic story. I love Jill Mansell. Wonderful, likeable characters with complex backgrounds that came together well.
But there may have been too many people in the book who were from other places. The accents were terrible, particularly Maureen from Milwaukee. People from Milwaukee do not sound like drunk southerners (usually)— and it’s totally okay not to know that! I would far rather just listen to the narrator read the story in her own voice than to be distracted by all of the changes of accent.

Weird dialogue
Revisado: 01-11-22
Okay. I tried really hard to like this book. The mystery element is good— but I don’t understand why the dialogue portions of the book are missing so many words which belong in conversation. There is a marked lack of pronouns and articles (like “the”) which results in a weird, stilted style, not just for one unique character, but in every quoted exchange with every character. These people are supposed to be midwestern (in Indiana), and the author makes them seem like bumpkins who met at the OK corral. I don’t get it at all. It REALLY detracts from an otherwise tolerable story.

Weak main character

I wish I would’ve known this was about a 34-year-old virgin before I bought this book. The idea that this woman had to get the blessing of her overly controlling parents to find happiness was ridiculous.
