Historia
Titus Crown is the first Black sheriff in the history of Charon County, Virginia. In recent decades, quiet Charon has had only two murders. But after years of working as an FBI agent, Titus knows better than anyone that while his hometown might seem like a land of moonshine, cornbread, and honeysuckle, secrets always fester under the surface. Then a year to the day after Titus’s election, a school teacher is killed by a former student and the student is fatally shot by Titus’s deputies. As Titus investigates the shootings, he unearths terrible crimes.

Consistent author, narrator
Revisado: 07-19-23
Tender and frank take on a sensitive topic. This is a hard combo to get right without being trite or patronizing. I found this author a few months ago and can't stop recommending him. Every book is completely different and original. And the narrator is just right for this author's work. Home run!

Historia
When Harland Cain holds a .45 automatic to his head and bears down slowly upon the trigger, he experiences a profound sense of control over his destiny for the first time in his life. He savors the moment and imagines the click of the hammer, the explosion, and the bullet spiraling through the barrel before everything turns black. It's then he hears the out-of-control screaming of tires on the pavement, followed by the sickening sound of metal crashing against concrete. He lays down the pistol and crosses his yard in that predawn darkness to find a young boy, bloody and dazed.

I have been following this author since I found his Thieftaker Chronicles. I thought that series was good, but not quite showcasing the authors talents. But this is stunning. If you love Larry McMurtry and James Lee Burke, this should capture your attention. I found it to be as Texas as McMurtry (meant as a compliment) and as original and unflinchingly facing violent topics as Burke. And yet it’s its own creation and no imitation. And the narration is reminiscent of Will Patton in cadence, which enriches the story. I wish I could give you all more stars. Thank you.

Historia
At times stern, at other times patient, at times perceptive, at other times in sad denial, Olive Kitteridge, a retired schoolteacher, deplores the changes in her little town of Crosby, Maine, and in the world at large, but she doesn’t always recognize the changes in those around her: a lounge musician haunted by a past romance; a former student who has lost the will to live; Olive’s own adult child, who feels tyrannized by her irrational sensitivities; and her husband, Henry, who finds his loyalty to his marriage both a blessing and a curse.

Amazing anthology
Revisado: 01-03-20
When I bought this BOT, I did not realize it was a collection of stories about Olive. As I am just getting to know Olive (at the suggestion of Ms Diane Rehm), this worked out well. And I learned a new listening skill: Set the sleep timer to ‘End of Chapter,’ regardless of when I am listening. This helped me to pause and digest each chapter. I think I’ll use this feature more often. Usually I just roll through books and when I get to the end I feel like I didn’t appreciate the writer enough. I think this new skill will remedy that.

Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters.

I loved the story, and learned so much new material.
I loved the narrator who could accurately pronounce every single US place name correctly! Thank you for that as it means so much to people with connections to these places.
I think I may scream if I hear another narrator pronounce Spokane as Spoe’-Cain. It’s Spo-Can’ people! And I winced when she said Chelan, until I realized she actually knew what she was saying. Thank you!

Historia
Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

Writer Reader
Revisado: 06-18-19
The writer reads his own poignant family story about loss and redemption against the backdrop of the Battle of Okinawa. If you are a family member of a soldier whose innocence was lost and his mind was shattered due to war, give this a listen. Mr Maharidge takes us on a path to redemption and considers how we can genetically inherit the undone tasks of our forebearers.

Historia
Surrounded by her children, her extended family, and what seems like half of Colleton County, a semi-conscious Rachel breaks weeks of pained silence with snippets of stories as randomly pieced together as a well-worn patchwork quilt. But the Knott family's joy quickly gives way to shock: less than an hour later, Aunt Rachel is found dead in her bed, smothered with a pillow. Who would kill a woman on her deathbed? Was it an act of mercy, or murder?

A must read debut novel
Revisado: 03-06-17
Where does The Art of Crash Landing rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is a must read for this year. Past must reads for me were the Alan Cumings autobio, and Gone With the Wind, and the long Eisenhower bio.
What did you like best about this story?
I didn't want to like Mattie, but I ended up really admiring her unapologetic vitality. Actually, the book is full of flawed characters just trying to adjust to their own humanity. The book is very well written: I learned much about writing and editing in this book, and I always appreciate that. That allowed the story to shine through.
Which scene was your favorite?
Right in the beginning, when Mattie is riding in the tow truck, and I'm realizing that I'm rooting for her to just catch a break, and recognize it, and capitalize on it.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes.
Any additional comments?
I love Johanna Parker's narration. She is one of my favorites because she reads the books: I can distinguish the characters because of her different voices and inflections, and she doesn't over-dramatize the readings. Some BOTs I have to quit and read the paper book because of the reader's over-dramatization. Johanna Parker is one of my go-to readers when I need a sure thing.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

Revisado: 08-06-15
What made the experience of listening to A Man Called Ove the most enjoyable?
The voice of the author matches the character. Many books have an author that tries to fit the character/protaganist to his own writing style, but this author did the opposite. And the narrator got it just right.

Moves fast and delivers
Revisado: 08-06-15
Any additional comments?
I like the juxtaposition of the Marine Corps background of the man adapting to his new situation in ultra-laid back central Florida Keys. And the book was edited down to the essentials: Not a lot of chatter about the color of someone's skirt, or softness of the eyes, etc., but just enough to get the gist of the story without being cold. After I finished the book, I realized how well the book was paced. I'll close this and switch screens to get the next book!
