Historia
We were outnumbered, outfought. Mankind was about to fall to the alien Flock. Our only chance was a desperate gamble, transforming Tier One SpecOps agents into deadly super soldiers. In the end, we won the war, but we lost the peace. The Flock surrendered and spent the next two hundred years making reparations, indentured to humanity, doing everything humans did not want to do. And the evolved super soldiers were consigned to an endless sleep. Ready if ever needed, but in time they became myths. Abandoned and forgotten.

Excellent but needed more editing
Revisado: 05-26-24
An excellent and intriguing military space opera, this is the first book of what was apparently planned as a series. However, with the untimely passing of co-author Weston Ochse in late 2023, I wonder whether the series will continue. If this winds up being a one-and-done, it was still very entertaining. Ray Porter’s narration was, as always, brilliant.
My one gripe is that the story itself could have been more tightly edited. As others have noted in their reviews, the book gets quite repetitive at times and probably could have been 10-20% shorter without the storyline suffering.

Meh
Revisado: 12-20-23
The story was a poor man’s version of Steve Alten’s “The Meg”. Mediocre at best. However, the narration was truly awful, with words constantly mispronounced as other reviewers have noted. Sadly, I did not see those reviews prior to buying this audiobook. Don’t make the same mistake that I did.

Much better than Aliens: Vasquez
Revisado: 12-16-23
The latest in the Aliens series is a HUGE improvement over the abysmal audiobook that preceded it (Aliens: Vasquez). While the plot drags in several spots and the Xenomorphs are not present as much as I’d like, the overall audiobook is a pleasant diversion. Unlike the prior volume - which sounded like a badly written and badly narrated YA novel - Aliens: Bishop returns us to battle action with the Colonial Marines. In addition, the narrators are - with one exception - heads and shoulders above the narrator of the prior book.

Historia
Even before the doomed mission to Hadley’s Hope on LV-426, Jenette Vasquez had to fight to survive. Born to an immigrant family with a long military tradition, she looked up to the stars, but life pulled her back down to Earth—first into a street gang, then prison. The Colonial Marines proved to be Vasquez’s way out—a way that forced her to give up her twin children. Raised by Jenette’s sister, those children, Leticia and Ramon, had to discover their own ways to survive.

Absolutely awful
Revisado: 12-14-23
This is probably the worst audiobook I have ever purchased. It has not a single redeeming feature.
The story comes across as a poorly written YA novel, with hackneyed plot lines and none of the excitement that should be found in an Aliens story.
While the story itself is terrible, the reader is even worse. She sounds very stilted and robotic at almost all points in the narration. On the rare occasions when she tries to do an accent, her effort is mediocre at best and typically ends mid-sentence.
Audible should be ashamed of itself for peddling this garbage to its listeners.

Historia
Meet Harry, aspiring tech entrepreneur. He’s a would-be Steve Jobs trapped in a cubicle gig at an angel investor firm, so close and yet so far from his dreams. His marriage is foundering, his career is stalled out, and all he wants is to create an app like Uber, or Tinder, something to make real change in the world, and change his own life forever. Now meet Peter, a deeply troubled computer genius who lives in a basement apartment, chugging red wine, nursing old grudges and writing code. When Harry meets Peter, it’s both of their lives that will change, when they invent an app for murder.

Annoying characters and narration ruin the story
Revisado: 11-27-23
NO SPOILER REVIEW:
The premise of this story is interesting (see Audible’s description) but the story itself is ruined by the fact that there is not a single likeable character contained in it. It’s hard for the listener to empathize with main characters who are so unsympathetic. Furthermore, the narrator chooses to make one character’s voice annoying to the point where I considered shutting off the book more than once. Had there been more likeable characters, the narrator’s voice choices might have been better (or at least less annoying). As it stands, I cannot recommend this audio selection to anyone.

Shallow, snarky commentary and a total waste of time
Revisado: 09-10-23
The author demonstrates no meaningful understanding of the constitution. Instead, this book consists entirely of a simple recitation of the actual original language of each passage of the Constitution, which is then followed by a short, snarky author comment about said passage. If the author actually had a meaningful understanding of the topic, his comments might have been useful … but he doesn’t and his comments are often nothing more than sarcastic nonsense. Don’t waste your time on this rubbish.

Two-and-a-half miles below the ice cap is Vostok, a 6,000 square mile liquid lake, over 1,000 feet deep, left untouched for more than 15 million years. Now, marine biologist Zachary Wallace and two other scientists aboard a submersible tethered to a laser will journey 13,000 feet beneath the ice into this unexplored realm to discover Mesozoic life-forms long believed extinct - and an object of immense power responsible for the evolution of modern man.

1st part awesome; 2nd part awful
Revisado: 07-09-23
The first part of this book is a typical Steve Alten prehistoric monster thriller but then it goes completely off the rails and becomes a conspiracy theorist’s dream with lectures about “global elites”, a global “shadow government” and other similar nonsense. Unfortunately, the story never regains its original plot path which seems to have been forgotten by the author. Despite an outstanding job by the narrator (whose diverse character accents really enhance the story), do yourself a favor and skip this one.

Abridged audiobooks are a relic of the past, from when there were only audiotape and CD versions available, so why does Audible continue to sell them when so many listeners despise them? If it is not financially prudent to re-record these books in an unabridged format, then Audible needs to PROMINENTLY note the fact that a book is abridged. Nowhere is that mentioned unless a potential purchaser has the time and ability to read customer reviews.

Drugged brims with surprises, revealing the fact that antidepressant drugs evolved from rocket fuel, highlighting the role of hallucinogens in the history of religion, and asking whether Prozac can help depressed cats. Entertaining and authoritative, Drugged is a truly fascinating book.

Fascinating story ruined by awful Reader
Revisado: 07-08-22
I had very high hopes for this book because the subject matter is of great interest to me. Having worked in a neuropharmacology research lab, I am familiar with many of the drugs and chemicals referenced by the author. It was that extremely disappointing to find out that the book is read by a narrator who hasn’t a clue about the proper pronunciation of literally dozens of chemicals, drugs, and even simple abbreviations related to same. While I don’t mind an occasional mispronunciation by a narrator, there are so many here that it becomes a major distraction. If this subject is of interest, I suggest you buy the book and read it rather than listen to this sorry effort.
