Historia
This question obsessed Renaissance writers, none more than Michel Eyquem de Montaigne, perhaps the first recognizably modern individual. A nobleman, public official, and winegrower, he wrote free-roaming explorations of his thought and experience, unlike anything written before. He called them essays, meaning “attempts” or “tries.” He put whatever was in his head into them: his tastes in wine and food, his childhood memories, the way his dog’s ears twitched when it was dreaming, as well as the religious wars....

Historia
Karl Deisseroth has spent his life pursuing truths about the human mind, both as a renowned clinical psychiatrist and as a researcher creating and developing the revolutionary field of optogenetics, which uses light to help decipher the brain’s workings. In Projections, he combines his knowledge of the brain’s inner circuitry with a deep empathy for his patients to examine what mental illness reveals about the human mind and the origin of human feelings - how the broken can illuminate the unbroken.

Whoa
Revisado: 03-24-25
It’s the epilogue that blew my mind the most. But also worth the journey. I have a high tolerance for poetic thought— which is the path this memoir of science, medicine and human behavior takes. You might also need such a tolerance to enjoy this impressive but strange project.

Historia
Peter is a Dublin lawyer in his thirties—successful, competent, and apparently unassailable. But in the wake of their father’s death, he’s medicating himself to sleep and struggling to manage his relationships with two very different women—his enduring first love, Sylvia, and Naomi, a college student for whom life is one long joke. Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. He has always seen himself as socially awkward, a loner, the antithesis of his glib elder brother. Now, in the early weeks of his bereavement, Ivan meets Margaret.

Attentiveness and intimacy
Revisado: 11-25-24
This is why we read novels, to be immersed in other lives. Very detailed, very visual and quietly emotional. My first Sally Rooney novel. The writing is odd— sentence fragments/ verb tense changes— but it lulled me into itself.

What fun!
Revisado: 03-24-23
This book is a rolling good time! Don’t miss it! But don’t listen on the train— because you will giggle and snort and slap your knee. You might even cry. Just don’t embarrass Penny! She has enough problems with her divorce, her dreary job, her disappeared parents, her crazy grandmother— and her grandmother’s accountant’s health challenges. For some reason all that is very funny when EM writes it.

Historia
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

Revisado: 03-07-23
The first section reads like an Edith Wharton novel— quite lovely. The second and third section get a bit lost in their dogma— it’s really more a celebration of Capitalism than a critique. Capitalists are so fascinating! The last section brings it all home— but with more of a whimper than a bang.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Well, I couldn’t put it down, but that doesn’t mean I liked it!
Revisado: 07-20-21
I love the reader for this Audible format. She could read the phone book, and I’d listen. But here she reads a terrifying story without any moral or humane resolution. If you’re a mother or a daughter, I would stay away from this story— if you can. Very depressing and disorienting— but if you like that kind of thing, dig in.

Historia
What does everyone in the modern world need to know? Renowned psychologist Jordan B. Peterson's answer to this most difficult of questions uniquely combines the hard-won truths of ancient tradition with the stunning revelations of cutting-edge scientific research. Humorous, surprising, and informative, Dr. Peterson tells us why skateboarding boys and girls must be left alone, what terrible fate awaits those who criticize too easily, and why you should always pet a cat when you meet one on the street.

Takes one to know one
Revisado: 02-26-18
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Mr. Peterson's basic thesis is that humans are born bad and cultural norms and socialization make us good— sacrifice for others makes us good— unless it goes to far, e.g. Marxism. But in his criticism of dogma, Peterson becomes dogmatic! His anti-Marxist, pro-capitalist views are refreshing in the first half of the book— but by rule 11 become scary and oppressive.
What was most disappointing about Jordan B. Peterson and Norman Doidge - foreword M.D. ’s story?
He criticizes idealism and then succumbs to it.
Which character – as performed by Jordan B. Peterson – was your favorite?
He is a very emotional reader which is lovely, and his chapter on meaning and the emotional and poetic end to it are really beautiful and moving.
Any additional comments?
So: I enjoyed the book... especially the first three-quarters, and then he got kind of extreme and freaked me out.
