Historia
At one time, Corrie ten Boom would have laughed at the idea that she had a story to tell. For the first 50 years of her life, nothing out of the ordinary ever happened to her. She was a spinster watchmaker living contentedly with her sister and their elderly father in the tiny house over their shop in Haarlem. Their uneventful days, as regulated as their own watches, revolved around their abiding love for one another. But with the Nazi invasion and occupation of Holland, everything changed....

Mighty examples of faith in Jesus!
Revisado: 11-15-23
This book is such a fine example of the faith in Jesus one family consistently displayed throughout their lives. Not just Corrie ten Boom and her sister, Betsy ten Boom, but their parents, other siblings, their children ~ even the in-laws that married into this perfectly grace-filled family!
The time spent especially in Ravensbruck, and afterwards, showed “miracle after miracle” ~
how much can be achieved when one takes Jesus at His word and lives a life of complete dependence and trust in Him!
So inspiring! Read this!
You may struggle a bit with the reader at first, but after a while you will see that she is the perfect voice for Corrie ten Boom!

My First Saint
Revisado: 09-08-23
I discovered Saint Francis of Assisi long before converting to Catholicism. I admired him because of his kindness to animals. Now that I am Catholic, I have a family of saints, and Saint Francis is always among them on a table in my bedroom!

This timely and powerful novel tells the story of three different children seeking refuge. Josef is a Jewish boy living in 1930s Nazi Germany. With the threat of concentration camps looming, he and his family board a ship bound for the other side of the world. Isabel is a Cuban girl in 1994. With riots and unrest plaguing her country, she and her family set out on a raft, hoping to find safety in America. Mahmoud is a Syrian boy in 2015. With his homeland torn apart by violence and destruction, he and his family begin a long trek toward Europe.

Unsophisticated Writing & Narration!
Revisado: 08-27-22
Alan Gratz is certainly no Chris Bohjalian or Amor Towles. However, he does put together a well-researched, relevant piece of historical fiction. As an avid reader with a MA in literature, all three narrators drove me nuts - I felt “talked down” to from start to finish. Additionally, there were no moments woven into the writing where I was challenged to think. “Refugee” caused me to feel as though I were reading “Charlotte’s Web.” If you are a sophisticated reader, pass on this one. (It is a good story, but not written for adult taste.)

Historia
On the last night of 1937, 25-year-old Katey Kontent is in a second-rate Greenwich Village jazz bar when Tinker Grey, a handsome banker, happens to sit down at the neighboring table. This chance encounter and its startling consequences propel Katey on a year-long journey into the upper echelons of New York society - where she will have little to rely upon other than a bracing wit and her own brand of cool nerve.

Amor Towles: a Brilliant Writer
Revisado: 08-06-22
After having read A Gentleman in Moscow and now Rules of Civility, I cannot praise Amon Towles writing highly enough. Towles masterfully weaves the fabric of each character so artfully, his audience is treated throughout both these novels to imagery that could not be more perfect in drawing the analogies he wants us to picture through his unequaled use of language. Add both of these books to your library and start either of them tonight. You will be enchanted by both.

Impressed with Narration!
Revisado: 07-26-22
My first Lisa Jewell novel certainly won’t be my last! Likewise, I was as enthralled with Helen Duff’s narration as I was with the organization of this unusual storyline. I did have to suspend belief here and there when it came to how easily the protagonist, Laurel, was able to ask questions and receive answers to her sometimes difficult questions of multiple characters, but that aside, this novel was realistic and the plot was brilliantly written.

Historia
Twenty-five-year-old fitness-instructor Elle has been toiling away in the LA rat race since her teen years with nothing to show for it but a “vintage” apartment (with a permanently clogged toilet), an “alt-comedy” (unemployed alcoholic) boyfriend, and an anorexic coworker who’s constantly surpassing Elle at work because her dad owns the place. While Elle might not have a rich daddy to fall back on, her luck changes when she finds herself being aggressively pursued by a hot, rich 45-year-old man, a.k.a. a zaddy.

Yes, it had a warning, but I ignored that warning. If you are looking for steamy sex, this is it. If you are looking for literature, walk away. You have better things to do with your time.

Historia
Before she was a trauma cleaner, Sandra Pankhurst was many things: husband and father, drag queen, gender reassignment patient, sex worker, small businesswoman, trophy wife... but as a little boy, raised in violence and excluded from the family home, she just wanted to belong. Now she believes her clients deserve no less. A man who bled quietly to death in his living room. Sarah Krasnostein has watched the extraordinary Sandra Pankhurst bring order and care to these, the living and the dead - and the book she has written is equally extraordinary.

Highly Elevated Writing!
Revisado: 07-22-22
I admit I had a difficult time getting involved in this audiobook; but, once I did it was clear sailing until I finished. The narration was excellent! There was a bit too much graphic writing for my taste in one part of this novel, and that has left me wondering how I will ever get the scene out of my mind. Even so, I am glad I made the choice to read The Trauma Cleaner. I learned a lot about myself in this book!

This stay-at-home mom has no job skills, an out-of-control 16-year-old son, a talkative 14-year-old who's suddenly gone silent, a six-year-old daughter whose heart is broken, an ex-husband whose younger girlfriend is expecting their baby, and two best friends who think she's somehow qualified to help them open a fitness spa for women.

FAR TOO LONG, BORING
Revisado: 07-14-22
This was a predictable and routine story line with no unexpected dips or turns. Stealing Home could easily have been written in less than half the number of chapters, thereby wasting less time for the proposed audience.

Brilliant, Spellbinding!
Revisado: 07-13-22
I was not immediately engaged; however, before I was a third the way through this book, I was hooked and did not want to do anything other than enjoy Julie Clark’s meticulous research and brilliant writing. If there is any doubt in your mind about whether or not to choose this novel, select it immediately — you won’t be sorry!

Historia
When Kristin Chapman agrees to let her husband, Richard, host his brother's bachelor party, she expects a certain amount of debauchery. She brings their young daughter to Manhattan for the evening, leaving her Westchester home to the men and their hired entertainment. What she does not expect is this: bacchanalian drunkenness, her husband sharing a dangerously intimate moment in the guest room, and two women stabbing and killing their Russian bodyguards before driving off into the night.

Not Bohjalian’s Best Effort, but Good!
Revisado: 07-11-22
In spite of the ridiculous, horribly annoying voice of Alexandra, which just about forced me to abandon The Guest Room, the story is sound. It deserves to be read and appreciated as another well-researched Bohjalian novel. The characters of Richard, Patrick, Kristin, and Spencer were thought out and believable. If you can get past Alexandra’s voice, you will probably enjoy The Guest Room.
