Historia
A family of four murdered in their hotel room. A single mother and her boyfriend both stabbed to death. A sordid history of violent crimes, repeated over and over - but decades apart. Olivia Barker is a therapist with no connection to the murders. But she has heard things. Stories that keep her up at night. Details that only a killer would know. A killer who could be one of her patients…Olivia has no proof for her suspicions. But as the body count rises, so do her fears. A rock is thrown through her window, her car tires are slashed, a chilling message is scrawled on her bathroom mirror.

Ridiculous
Revisado: 07-23-24
The plot was so ridiculous I couldn’t care about anyone or anything. This is the second book I’ve listened to by this author because they were included with my membership. I’ve never heard an auditor use the word “mutter” more than this guy. That should’ve been the title of the book. I do not recommend.

Historia
Ben Jones lives a quiet, hardscrabble life, working as a trucker on Route 117, a little-travelled road in a remote region of the Utah desert that serves as a haven for fugitives and others looking to hide from the world. For many of the desert's inhabitants, Ben's visits are their only contact with the outside world, and the only landmark worth noting is a once-famous roadside diner that hasn't opened in years.

I Didn’t Want it to End
Revisado: 06-25-24
Maybe it was because I listened while visiting New Mexico, which is similar in so many ways to the Utah landscape described in this book, but the story completely enchanted me. I liked the main character immensely, and the supporting characters were well-drawn human beings who also won my heart in many ways. The narrator was pitch perfect for this book. I give the entire thing my highest recommendation

Perfect Narrator, Unforgettable Main Character
Revisado: 05-18-23
Readers not from the Greater Boston area may not appreciate this historical fiction piece, but I was riveted from the first chapter. I’m so glad I listened because the narrator was pitch perfect and made the story come alive. I won’t soon forget Mary Pat, or her quest for vengeance and the insights that were revealed about herself along the way.

LAPD Lieutenant Milo Sturgis is a fine homicide detective, but when he needs to get into the mind of a killer, he leans on the expertise of his best friend, the brilliant psychologist Dr. Alex Delaware. While Sturgis has a knack for piecing together the details of a crime, Delaware can decipher the darkest intents driving the most vicious of perpetrators. And there’s no better place for the doctor’s analytical skills to shine than a rowdy hall full of young men and women intoxicated on life and lust...and suddenly faced with the specter of death.

My Favorite in a While
Revisado: 03-15-19
You’d think after eight million books these characters would wear out their welcome, but I still love them, probably more than I would if I read the books, due to John Rubinstein ‘s top- notch performances. Everybody we love had a great part in this one, I really cared about the victims, and Alex played an essential role in the solving of the crime. The ending was especially great. I’ll listen to this one again and, as usual, will have withdrawal for a while, then eagerly await the next in the series. Thank you, John Rubinstein!!

Great Thriller from an Unorthodox Perspective
Revisado: 10-20-17
I don't want to give too much away, but it's clear after a few minutes of listening to this book that the main character is a jerk. Just how much of a jerk is revealed throughout the listen. Graham Halstead did a terrific job bringing this cad to life, and it was an interesting mind to get into...the mind of a complete narcissist and ....well, I don't want to say too much because it would spoil the fun. You know he's a jerk, but how far he'll go is what keeps you listening. I highly recommend! If you enjoy thrillers then this is a great way to spend your credit! Congratulations on a great debut, Kaira Rouda!

Duchovny Drags it Down
Revisado: 10-20-17
I am an X-phile from wayback, and I was thrilled when they announced that they were doing these audio dramatizations. The first one was pretty good, but I was very disappointed in this one, and for one main reason: David Duchovny's performance. He literally sounds like he walked into the studio hungover, never pre-read the script, did it all in one take and then took his nice fat paycheck and went home. Obviously they didn't all get together and do this in one big room but recorded their parts separately. Perhaps it wouldn't been better if they'd at least had Gillian Anderson in the same room with him because maybe she would have inspired him to step up his game. All of the other actors, including her, put their all into it. But he's just reading words on a page. No acting whatsoever. And I'm not talking about the part where he's supposed to be (SPOILER!) high, but all through the book. If he didn't want to do it he could've said NO and then we'd have a fine audio dramatization with the people who care about their careers and their fans.

Even having hundreds of closed cases to his credit can't keep LAPD police lieutenant Milo Sturgis from agonizing over the crimes that don't get solved - and the victims who go without justice. Victims like Katherine Hennepin, a young woman strangled and stabbed in her home. A single suspect with a solid alibi leads to a dead end - one even Alex Delaware's expert insight can't explain. The only thing to do is move on to the next murder case - because there's always a next one.

Revisado: 04-29-16
John Rubinstein brings Jonathan Kellerman's characters and stories to life so beautifully that I feel like I'm visiting old friends when I listen. Although this wasn't my favorite Alex Delaware story, any tale that brings me Alex and Milo is a welcome distraction. They are always true to character except for one thing- why, after all these years, have they still not learned the name of the woman in the sari at Cafe Mogul? ;)

Historia
Alden McCausland and his mother are what they call “accident rich”; thanks to an unexpected life-insurance policy payout and a winning Big Maine Millions scratcher, Alden and his Ma are able to spend their summers down by Lake Abenaki, idly drinking their days away in a three-room cabin with an old dock and a lick of a beach. Across the lake, they can see what “real rich” looks like: the Massimo family’s Twelve Pines Camp, the big white mansion with guest house and tennis court that Alden’s Ma says is paid for by “ill-gotten gains” courtesy of Massimo Construction.

A Mainer says "Listen Instead of Reading!"
Revisado: 07-18-15
Where does Drunken Fireworks rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Near the very top
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
I wouldn't exactly call it a "barn burner," but it wouldn't make a train take a dirt road, eithah. I was eager to find out how this escalating "arms race" ended, though. Not your typical King story...so don't come here looking for horror. This is a tribute to King's Maine roots and it succeeds in that sense with FIVE STARS in that sense. I was just a little disappointed in the ending, which is why it got only four stars in my rating. But don't let that stop you. This story is NOT about the destination...it's about the ride!
Which character – as performed by Tim Sample – was your favorite?
Alden...the narrator. He was a hoot!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes, it made me laff laff laff (and I only reserve that spelling for things that truly make me guffaw.) King knows his Mainers...and NO ONE could have read this book the way Tim Sample did. As a Mainer I was continually amused by the use of Maine-isms, and Sample's pitch perfect rendition of them. If you don't like it...then "tough titty said the kitty!"
Any additional comments?
LISTEN...don't read. You won't really understand this story unless you listen to it. I can't even imagine just reading it off the page. Tim Sample makes the book come alive. His Maine accent is spot on. I think this is worthy of a Grammy nomination for best Spoken Word Recording. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

With an ailing mother to care for, Lisa Grant takes the first job she can find: research assistant to District Attorney Scott Buchanan. What Lisa expects to be a mind-numbingly boring task turns into anything but when a missing-persons case draws her attention. The details of the case are engrossing: an entire family — father, mother, and two children — disappeared without a trace more than 28 years ago. Except that’s not all: the mother in a photo Lisa finds could be her own twin.

Not My Cup of Tea
Revisado: 04-30-15
I love suspend novels and mysteries, but this felt more like a Harlequin romance than a thriller. Unnecessarily flowery language didn't help matters. I'm sure there's an audience for this sort of "damsel in distress" novel, but I'm not it.
