Historia
The renowned fantasy and science fiction writer China Mieville has long been inspired by the ideals of the Russian Revolution, and here, on the centenary of the revolution, he provides his own distinctive take on its history. In February 1917, in the midst of bloody war, Russia was still an autocratic monarchy: nine months later it became the first socialist state in world history. How did this unimaginable transformation take place? How was a ravaged and backward country, swept up in a desperately unpopular war, rocked by not one but two revolutions?

Gripping narrative of often ignored events
Revisado: 10-22-17
I always imagined the Russian revolution as inevitable, but this book shows that it could have gone either way. The engaging portrait of the revolutionaries is made more poignant by the knowledge of their future fates during the purges.
The narrator needs to work on his Russian pronunciation, but is otherwise tells the tale well.

General Alex Dumas is a man almost unknown today, yet his story is strikingly familiar—because his son, the novelist Alexandre Dumas, used his larger-than-life feats as inspiration for such classics as The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers.

Excellent reading. Shines new light on the apparently suppressed treatment of black peoples in revolutionary France. I was moved by the heroism and decency portrayed in the life of Alex Dumas.

Historia
The word "barbarian" quickly conjures images of Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan. Yet few people realize these men belong to a succession of nomadic warriors who emerged from the Eurasian steppes to conquer civilizations. It's a part of ancient and medieval history that's often overlooked, but for an accurate view of how the world evolved, it's essential. Covering some 6,000 miles and 6,000 years, this eye-opening course illuminates how a series of groups pushed ever westward, coming into contact with the Roman Empire, Han China, and distant cultures from Iraq to India.

Historia
Rajaniemi's future is one in which quantum effects can be manipulated by the powerful to unknowable ends; an era in which some are gods and billions of others are enslaved for the processing power of their brains; where in the inner Solar System, the once-human Sobornost endlessly iterate themselves in vast, planet-sized guberniyas, while casually running experiments on the photosphere of the sun. In this world, Jean le Flambeur has broken out of a virtual prison and, later, into the mind of a living god.

Great book, bad narration
Revisado: 08-13-14
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Tried it for a couple of hours and found the reader poor. Poor pronunciation of specialized terms, robotic delivery, character voices indistinguishable. Only gets three stars due to the great story.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Roger Wayne?
Scott Brick was pretty good on the Quantum Thief.
